The Prime Minister said Malaysia shared the grief of those affected, adding that the images of homes swept away, families mourning their loved ones, and rescue workers braving treacherous conditions are deeply heart-wrenching.
"In this difficult time, the people of Malaysia stand in solidarity with all those affected. We share your sorrow, and we draw strength from the bravery, compassion and endurance shown by so many on the frontlines," he said in a post on his Facebook page on Monday (Aug 18).
He added that Malaysia's thoughts and prayers are with all who are grieving and with those still searching for hope in the midst of the tragedy. - Bernama

Azalina said the initiative, already in place in Sabah and Sarawak, will be extended to Peninsular Malaysia soon. 'We want to strengthen legal aid with a focus on the rural areas,' she said when winding up the debate on the 13th Malaysia Plan for her ministry in the Dewan Rakyat today. She said courts are mostly available in cities and big towns in districts, making it difficult for rural communities to seek legal assistance. 'Our hope is to have one mobile unit for each state, especially for the rural areas. Mobile legal access will not only solve small cases but also help with registering documents,' she said. She said the initiative has received backing from newly appointed Chief Justice Wan Ahmad Farid Wan Salleh. Azalina also said the Public Defenders Bill will be tabled for its first reading next week, followed by the second reading. Anwar urges good governance, strong oversight in AI to avoid past ‘piratisation' mistakes
CYBERJAYA, Aug 18 — Principles of good governance and proper oversight must be firmly embedded in the development of artificial intelligence (AI) to ensure Malaysia's digital transformation progresses effectively, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said today. Anwar, who is also finance minister, said that while AI and emerging technologies present vast opportunities, they must be approached carefully to avoid outcomes that could harm the country. He also drew a comparison with the country's past privatisation efforts, noting how a lack of transparency and poor governance turned some initiatives into costly failures. 'At that time, it wasn't really 'privatisation' but more like 'piratisation' that bypassed proper processes. 'And what was the result? Many companies that were initially awarded projects with the hope of benefiting the country and the people ended up incurring major losses, which became significant national debts that the people had to bear. 'This is why, in all aspects of computerisation, digital transformation and AI development, the principle of good governance is essential,' he said at the Temu Anwar@Universiti Multimedia (MMU) programme and the launch of MMU Faculty of Artificial Intelligence and Engineering (FAIE) here today. — Bernama

Improper Jalur Gemilang Displays To Be Probed Responsibly
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 18 (Bernama) -- Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail stressed that police will investigate any offence involving the improper display of the Jalur Gemilang, professionally and responsibly. He said that if investigations reveal malicious intent, appropriate legal action will be taken against those involved, including under the Emblems and Names (Prevention of Improper Use) Act 1963, or the Minor Offences Act 1955 (Act 336). 'If there is an offence, a police report should be lodged and an investigation will follow. If it is proven to be done with malicious intent, charges will be brought. However, if the matter is blown out of proportion to the point of creating unrest, that would not be healthy in the current climate of our country. 'When there is a clear violation of the law, trust that the police will carry out their duties responsibly, to ensure that the nation remains peaceful and secure,' he said, during a ministers' briefing session at the Dewan Rakyat, today. Saifuddin Nasution also urged all parties, including the public, political leaders and civil society, to play their role in safeguarding national peace and harmony. On the issue of national security threats, Saifuddin said the country's enforcement and defence agencies continue to step up security measures, as Malaysia remains a target for infiltration, including by Mossad and Israeli agents. He added that swift action by the authorities has led to the arrest of individuals and groups, including locals, suspected of being involved in terrorism-related activities. '…we have arrested local citizens, students, civil servants and other individuals. Some have been brought to court, some are still on trial, others are under remand. A few months ago, we also uncovered and detained more terrorist cells, including foreigners from Bangladesh. 'National security threats remain present around us. Extremist ideologies such as militancy, terrorism and radical movements still exist, and infiltration by foreign agents continues. I am stating this based on facts,' he said.
