Former England striker Toni Duggan welcomes WSL expansion to 14 teams from 2026
A proposal put forward by Nikki Doucet, chief executive of Women's Professional Leagues Limited, was voted through at Monday's WSL Football shareholders meeting.
It still requires the approval of the Football Association board but, if it gets the green light, 14 teams will compete in the women's top flight from next year and the 2025-26 WSL campaign will conclude with a relegation/promotion play-off.

Duggan told talkSPORT: 'I just love what women's football has done. I was part of it when they scraped it back to eight teams.
'Don't get me wrong, it was difficult to take because a league of eight teams, you were only playing a few games a season.
'We've had to gradually build to get to this stage and I think this is the right time for it, really.
'Over in Spain, if I'm comparing the two, I think Spanish football can learn from the WSL because if I'm being honest, there's too many teams over in Spain and they need to condense it to bring the talent together.'
Duggan, who played for Everton, Manchester City – with whom she won the WSL title – Barcelona and Atletico Madrid during a glittering career which also brought 79 senior international caps, announced her retirement at the age of 33 in September last year.
However, she admitted her excitement at a development she believes is significant for the women's game in this country.
She said: 'Obviously clubs now have to adhere to certain things. They have to have a stadium big enough, they have to be able to have television companies there, they have to have good facilities.

'I just think that's important for women's football. It's a given for the men's teams, so that's the direction the women's game has gone in and now we're in a position where we're ready to make it a 14-team league, and I think it's exciting.'
If the expansion from a 12-team WSL to 14 gets FA approval, it offers three Women's Championship clubs the chance to gain promotion during the 2025-26 campaign.
The top two in the Championship – which will be rebranded as Women's Super League 2 from next season – will go up automatically and the third-placed side will take on the team which finished bottom of the WSL in a play-off.

The newly promoted League Two side are making moves for a title tilt this season East Kilbride have strengthened further this week with a hat-trick of signings – but boss Mick Kennedy says there's still plenty of fresh faces to follow. The newly-promoted League Two side have snapped up winger Jack Healy who won promotion from League Two with East Fife last season, former Partick Thistle and Kelty Hearts left-sided midfielder James Lyon and winger Keir Foster from Lowland League Bo'ness United. It takes Kilby's summer signings to four after the capture of striker Ouzy See from Edinburgh City last week and Kennedy expects a few more in the door at K-Park over the coming days. He said: 'All three of the boys will be great signings for us. 'Jack has been on our radar since around January/February. We built a profile of the kind of players we wanted and we wanted to bring the average age of the squad down to work with a group in their early 20s who had played a significant amount of league games. 'I don't think anyone would deny that Jack has been one of the most successful wingers in League Two last season. He had options to stay [at East Fife] and he had other options in League One, so it took a lot of work to get him across the line, but he will be a real asset. 'He fits the profile for us; he's quick, dynamic, fit, strong and an ambitious young guy. I think he will do well for us. 'With Keir, he played against us twice last season. Sometimes it is hard for players to stand out against us because we have the ball so much, but I thought Keir had moments where he showed real quality. 'There was a bit of competition for him and we are delighted to bring him in. I think he will surprise people. He's at a great age at 23, he's physically very strong and he will be an excellent addition. 'And with James, we actually tried to bring him in before he went to Kelty. If you speak to anyone at Partick, it was a real surprise that James didn't break through there. 'He maybe just didn't have the physicality for the Championship, but in terms of his technical ability, he carries the ball really well. He's only 22 but he's played a few games in the leagues.' Asked if more would follow, Kennedy said: 'I imagine there will be another four or five this week. One is to get international clearance and two we are sorting the paperwork with their loan clubs, and maybe some others.' The signing of a host of young players is a break from the club's transfer policy in the past and Kennedy said he convinced the hierarchy that this will be the way to go in League Two, rather than any 'big name' signings. He added:'We've said already there won't be big name signings and we won't be throw money at players. 'We agreed with the board and the owners that we would change the model, and that was driven by me to a large extent. 'I wanted to work with a younger group because the philosophy and culture at the club really suits young boys who want to breakthrough in their careers. It is up to us to build that platform for them and that is the model the club will go down now. 'I think it is best in terms of how I like to work and I think there is a real opportunity to build the right philosophy on the pitch, which will get players to buy into the culture.'

Wrexham AFC new-boy Ryan Hardie joins from Plymouth Argyle
Hardie has joined Wrexham from Plymouth Argyle for an undisclosed fee, with the 28-year-old signing a contract until the end of the 2027-28 season to become the first new signing of the summer transfer window. He scored 74 goals in 248 games for the Home Park outfit since signing in January 2020 – initially on loan before making the move permanent the following year. Impressively, Hardie reached double figures for goals in each of the last four seasons, including two in the Championship. Despite finishing as leading scorer, Hardie was unable to prevent Argyle being relegated from the second tier last term but he will remain at that level with the Reds who secured an historic third successive promotion, and Parkinson is delighted to get his man. "We have looked at Ryan over the last year or so and I am really pleased to sign him," Parkinson said about former Scottish youth international Hardie, who started his career at Rangers and also had a spell with Blackpool before switching to Plymouth. "We have been working on it for a while and it is good business for us. "There was a clause in there which enabled us to sign him and we decided to bring him into the club. "Ryan is a player with an interesting profile. He has scored goals in the last couple of years in the Championship in a team which has been in the bottom six most of the season. MORE WREXHAM AFC NEWS "Ryan's movement is good and he makes good runs in and around the box. "He wants to get into the danger area and ultimately, goals are so important at any level of football. "Ryan has contributed, particularly in the last two seasons at Championship level which is obviously important for us because that is where we are operating this coming season. "I think he is a player who is still developing. He is hungry to come to Wrexham and make his mark, and we are excited about getting him on board with us."
