Ronnie O'Sullivan makes two maximum breaks in Saudi Arabia Masters semi-final

Yahoo2 days ago
Ronnie O'Sullivan hit two maximum breaks in his 6-3 victory over Chris Wakelin in the semi-finals of the Saudi Arabia Masters.
The 49-year-old had to wait seven years since his last 147 break at the English Open in 2018, and two hours later he achieved his 17th career maximum and second of the night.
O'Sullivan's first 147 came in the opening frame of the match and with the scores locked at 3-3, the Rocket completed a second to earn a £147,000 bonus for making two maximum breaks across the UK Championship, Masters, World Championship and Saudi Arabia Masters.
Ronnie also slotted breaks of 134 and 142 in a dominant display and will take on Neil Robertson in the final of the competition.
O'Sullivan told TNT Sports: 'I'm sitting there at 3-3 thinking I'm probably going to lose this game after a maxi, a 142 and a 70 clearance.
'He (Wakelin) is a monster. I said he's going to win a ranking event, he's so solid. He's better than solid, solid is a compliment, he's very reliable but he's got more than that. It's like Kyren Wilson. As a player he's very hard to break down. He's a superb competitor, superb player.'
Robertson beat Elliot Slessor 6-3 to reach the final before revealing he had met his pre-season goal of qualifying for the Tour Championship.
Former world champion Robertson was never headed in Jeddah as he made the 39th ranking final of his career.
'This is the biggest tournament we have until the World Championship,' Robertson told TNT Sports.
'With the ranking points available, I don't have to worry about playing in the Invitational or the Tour Championship.
'I set a goal at the start of the season to get into the Tour Championship.
'That was my only goal and I've done that already in the first tournament. It's nice it takes care of the rest of the season.'
Englishman Slessor, 29th in the official world rankings but set to rise several places after picking up the biggest cheque of his career, won the third frame with a 92 break.
Robertson responded with 93 against his regular practice partner and a crucial pink down the rail in the seventh frame put him in control at 5-2.
'We practice a lot with each other and there's usually heavy scoring,' said the Australian.
'We tried to make things happen but the balls ran awkward, and we both missed some tricky pots that led to scrappy frames.
'Knowing him well, if I wasn't playing him I would have wanted him to win the match. It's quite tough but you've got to put that aside.'
Robertson sealed matters with his second 93 break to book his place in Saturday's final.

The World Games 2025: China Takes Gold In Men's And Women's Breaking

On August 17-18 in Chengdu, China, 16 b-boys and 16 b-girls battled for gold in Men's Breaking and Women's Breaking at The World Games 2025. The home field must have worked its magic, as China's Lithe-ing (Qi Xiangyu) and Royal (Guo Pu) emerged victorious in the respective events. Watch the replay here. So far, the World Games 2025 is the most prominent global appearance for this hip hop dance form since the Paris Olympics in August 2024, at least in a sporting context. Before Paris, The World Games 2022 in Birmingham also featured breaking, where USA's Victor Montalvo and Japan's Yuasa Ami won gold. In Chengdu, the first day of round robin matches determined who qualified for the second day's single elimination brackets, which were even more hard fought. The energy was palpable in Chengbei Gymnasium, as the crowd cheered their favorites on, building to a high in the two final battles. The Men's Breaking podium consisted of Lithe-ing (CHN), Issin (Hishikawa Issin, JPN) with the silver, and Shigekix (Nakarai Shigeyuki, JPN) taking bronze. This is a vindication of sorts for Lithe-ing, who barely missed out on gold at the WDSF Asian Breaking Championships this past June, where Shigekix won the Men's. The Women's Breaking finals was all Chinese, as Royal had to face off against her national teammate 671 (Liu Qingyi). Nicka (Dominika Banevič, LTU) won the battle for third. It's an especially impressive streak for Royal, who won both the Youth and Adult divisions at the Asian Breaking Championships. 671 wasn't far behind then either—she won the bronze in Adult. These podium results underscore the importance of consistency and endurance in these two-day 'sport breaking' events. All six breakers who medaled in TWG 2025 are known for their consistent execution all the way from prelims to finals, and they showed it in Chengdu. It was also a treat to see somewhat less conventional approaches wow the crowd. For example, France's Killian (Killian Emmanuel Treport) and Syssy (Sya Dembélé) tended to opt for punchy blowups that were just as, if not more memorable than the longer power move combinations from other competitors. Overall, the performances from these past two days captured the essence of breaking about as well as possible given the context. The breakers displayed their personalities and own flavor, along with the impeccable technique that this level of competition requires. While audience members were seated rather far from the stage—crowd engagement energizes the dancers but there are logistical considerations—the DJ and MC's performed admirably and kept the room's energy buzzing. Although this year's World Games are coming to a close, this isn't the end for breaking on the world stage this year. New and seasoned fans alike can look forward to the Red Bull BC One World Final in Tokyo on November 9. Japan is shaping up as the place to be for pro breaking this winter, as the WDSF World Breaking Championships will be held in Fukuoka on December 12-13.

Wesley top Bologna target after Ndoye sale to Nottingham Forest

Bologna have reportedly targeted Al-Nassr's Brazilian winger Wesley Gassova after selling Dan Ndoye to Nottingham Forest. The sale to the Premier League generated a huge profit for the club, as Ndoye had been bought from FC Basel for €16.45m in the summer of 2023 and sold on two years later for €42m plus a 20 per cent cut of the future resale fee. He will prove a difficult figure to replace in the squad, having contributed nine goals and six assists in all competition last season. (Photo by) According to the Corriere dello Sport, Bologna have identified Wesley Gassova as their target to take over the role. The 20-year-old Brazilian had already been heavily linked with a move to Serie A earlier in the summer and is now a prime option for the Rossoblu. He moved from Corinthians to Al-Nassr for €18m in August 2024, scoring one goal and providing three assists in 22 competitive games for the Saudi Pro League club. It is believed that Al-Nassr would sell for the same price, but his €4m per season salary is a big problem, so he'd have to take a pay cut. Other options mentioned by the Corriere dello Sport are Tottenham Hotspur owned Bryan Gil and Jonathan Rowe of Olympique Marseille.
