Shiva Rajkumar denies clapping for Kamal Haasan's Kannada remark as Thug Life release in Karnataka remains uncertain

Ever since actor Kamal Haasan remarked that Kannada was born out of Tamil while promoting his upcoming film Thug Life in Karnataka, he has caused a huge uproar in the state. Kannada actor Shiva Rajkumar, who also attended the promotional event, denies clapping when Kamal made this statement, even as a pro-Kannada outfit threatens theatres not to release Thug Life in the state. (Also Read: 'All Kamal Haasan films to be banned in Karnataka', says minister after actor refuses to apologise on Kannada remark row) Talking to the press, Shiva, who previously defended Kamal, made it clear that he does not agree with Kamal's statement about Kannada. He said, 'All the languages are important to us. But when it comes to the mother tongue, Kannada is the first priority, there's no doubt about that. I've said this before, I can give my life for Kannada. I should not tell that (Kamal Haasan must apologise). He is a senior actor, and I am the biggest fan of him.' He then clarified that many seem to be under the misconception that he showed support for Kamal's remark at the event by clapping when he said it. Shiva agrees he did clap, but it was for a different statement. He said, 'At the event, I did not understand what was going on. But they're showing clippings as if I'm clapping for that. I was clapping because he told, he was my chithappa (uncle).' According to ANI, a pro-Kannada organisation, Karnataka Rakshana Vedike, warned the owners of Victory Cinema Theatre in Kamakshipalya, Bengaluru, not to release Mani Ratnam's Thug Life. The Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce (KFCC) has also banned the film's release in Karnataka, asking the actor to apologise for his remarks. Praveen Shetty, who belongs to the organisation, told the news agency, 'Kamal Haasan has spoken against the Kannada language. We will not allow Kamal Haasan's film to be released in Karnataka. They said that the film will be released at the Victory Cinema. We came here today and told the theatre owners not to release Kamal Haasan's film. If the film is released, the government will be held responsible for any untoward incidents that follow.' Thug Life, which also stars Silambarasan TR and Trisha Krishnan in lead roles, is directed by Mani Ratnam. According to Sacnilk, Mani's previous film, Ponniyin Selvan—Part 1, earned ₹28.12 crore in Karnataka, while Part 2 made ₹22.55 crore in the state. After Tamil Nadu, Karnataka was the highest-earning state for both films. Kamal's Indian 2 made ₹8.55 crore there. The actor, however, has refused to apologise for his comment, telling the media, 'It is a democracy. I believe in law and justice. My love for Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Kerala is true. Nobody will suspect it except for those who have an agenda. I've been threatened earlier too, and if I am wrong, I would apologise, if I'm not, I won't.'

'I had my time': Mark Hamill on his appearance in Star Wars franchise future films

Washington DC [US], June 1 (ANI): The actor Mark Hamill is unlikely to return to the Star Wars universe in the future. He played the iconic role of Luke Skywalker in 'Star Wars' films. In a recent interview with ComicBook as quoted by Variety, Hamill, who played Luke Skywalker in the first three franchise-spawning 'Star Wars' films, discussed his future in the immortal sci-fi universe. While he started his journey with 'A New Hope' in 1977 alongside Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher, Hamill has no interest in continuing the saga. "I am so grateful to George [Lucas] for letting me be a part of that back in the day, the humble days when George called 'Star Wars' 'the most expensive low-budget movie ever made,'" he said. "We never expected it to become a permanent franchise and a part of pop culture like that. But my deal is, I had my time. I'm appreciative of that, but I think they should focus on the future and all the new characters," added Hamill as quoted by Variety. He continued, joking that he "disappeared in ['The Last Jedi'], I left my robes behind. And there's no way I'm gonna appear as a naked force ghost." Hamill's last major appearance as Luke Skywalker in "Star Wars" was as a force ghost in 2019's "Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker." He also made brief appearances as Luke with de-ageing and motion capture effects in "The Mandalorian" and "The Book of Boba Fett", reported Variety. "Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope" went on to become one of the most iconic films in history after its 1977 release, inspiring an endless march of spinoff series and follow-up films. As of today, there have been 12 total films, including the original trilogy, and countless TV shows set in the "Star Wars" universe. The upcoming instalments include 'The Mandalorian and Grogu,' starring Pedro Pascal as the masked drifter with baby Yoda, and 'Star Wars: Starfighter,' starring Ryan Gosling, reported Variety. (ANI)

Pro-Kannada organisation warns theatre owners on Kamal Haasan's 'Thug Life' release in Bengaluru amid Kannada language row

Bengaluru (Karnataka) [India], June 1 (ANI): A pro-Kannada organisation, Karnataka Rakshana Vedike, attempted to lay siege to the theatre in Kamakshipalya, Bengaluru, to restrict the release of Kamal Haasan's 'Thug Life' on Sunday. Praveen Shetty of the Karnataka Rakshana Vedike warned the owners of Victory Cinema Theatre in Kamakshipalya, Bengaluru, not to release Kamal Haasan's 'Thug Life', alleging that the actor has made inappropriate remarks about the Kannada language. The move by the Karnataka Rakshana Vedike came after actor reportedly stated that 'Kannada is born out of Tamil' during a promotional event in Chennai. This led to several protests by the pro-Kannada organisations and the ban by the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce (KFCC) over the release of the movie 'Thug Life'. While speaking with ANI, Praveen Shetty said, 'Kamal Haasan has spoken against the Kannada language. We will not allow Kamal Haasan's film to be released in Karnataka. They said that the film will be released at the Victory Cinema. In this context, we came here today and told the theatre owners not to release Kamal Haasan's film. Kamal Haasan's film should not be released in Karnataka. If the film is released, the government will be held responsible for any untoward incidents that follow.' On Wednesday, the Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah criticised Kamal Haasan for his reported remark about the Kannada language, stating that he was not aware of the 'long-standing' history of the language. 'Kannada has a long-standing history. Poor Kamal Haasan, he is unaware of it,' the Karnataka Chief Minister said.'Thug Life,' directed by Mani Ratnam also stars Trisha Krishnan and Silambarasan TR in lead roles. Speaking to media personnel outside the DMK party headquarters in Chennai, Haasan said, 'It is a democracy. I believe in law and justice. My love for Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Kerala is true. Nobody will suspect it except for those who have an agenda. I've been threatened earlier too, and if I am wrong, I would apologise, if I'm not, I won't.' Meanwhile, the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce (KFCC) has banned the release of 'Thug Life' over the actor's purported remarks on the Kannada language. Speaking to mediapersons in Bengaluru today Sa Ra Govindu, representative of KFCC, said that they have decided to ban the release of Kamal Haasan starrer 'Thug Life' in Karnataka as they stand firmly with Karnataka Rakshana Vedike and other Kannada organisations for their demands of halting the release of the film until the actor issues a pubic apology. The KFCC representative said that Kamal Haasan has not yet issued an apology for hurting the sentiments of the Kannada people during his promotional event in Chennai. He said, 'When there is pressure, I have to do. Even Karnataka Rakshana Vedike were present; whatever they say, we should do it. Even they would speak about it. Definitely, there is no 'Sorry' term being specified anywhere by Kamal Hassan. We will surely not release the film. We (KFCC) will stand with Rakshina Vedike and other Kannada organisations.' 'Thug Life,' directed by Mani Ratnam, also stars Trisha Krishnan and Silambarasan TR in lead roles. (ANI)
