Australia police search for suspect in arson attack on Melbourne synagogue
SYDNEY: Australian police said late on Friday (July 4) they were looking for a man suspected of deliberately starting a fire at a Melbourne synagogue filled with worshippers.
The fire at the synagogue in the east of Victoria's state capital was sparked on Friday night, police said in a statement. Firefighters extinguished the blaze at the entrance and there were no injuries.
"There were approximately 20 people inside the synagogue at the time of the incident," police said, adding that an arson specialist was investigating the scene.
Police said of the attack there was "no place in our society for antisemitic or hate-based behaviour".
Alex Ryvchin, co-CEO of Executive Council of Australian Jewry, an umbrella group for Australia's Jews, said in a statement the arson took place as those inside sat down to Shabbat dinner.
"These events are a severe escalation directed towards our community," Ryvchin said.
Australia has suffered several antisemitic incidents in recent years, with homes, schools, synagogues and vehicles targeted by vandalism and arson, drawing the ire of the country's traditional ally Israel.
The incidents have included a fake plan set up by organised crime to attack a Sydney synagogue using a caravan of explosives in order to divert police resources, police said in March. - Reuters

ATHENS (Reuters) -An external explosive device most likely caused the blast that damaged Greek oil tanker Vilamoura as it was sailing off the Libyan coast last week, the vessel's Greece-based operator TMS Tankers said on Sunday, citing an initial investigation. The Marshall Islands-flagged tanker Vilamoura had left the Libyan port of Zuetina on June 27 to head to Gibraltar with some 1 million barrels of oil when there was an explosion in the engine room. "Preliminary investigation findings clearly indicate that the explosion, the resulting fracture of the side shell plating, and the flooding of the engine room were caused by an external source —an unidentified explosive device," TMS Tankers said. Maritime security sources told Reuters last week that a limpet mine may have caused the blast on Vilamoura, the fifth such incident to hit commercial shipping in the region in recent months. Following the explosion and the flooding of its engine room the vessel lost manoeuvrability, although it was able to be towed towards Greece. Woman airlifted after lion attack at Brisbane zoo
SYDNEY: A woman has been airlifted to the hospital after being bitten by a lion at a zoo in the Australian state of Queensland, Xinhua reported. Emergency services were called to the Darling Downs Zoo, 110km southwest of Brisbane, around 8.30am on Sunday following reports that a woman in her 50s had been attacked by an animal. The woman, an employee of the zoo, suffered a significant arm injury and was airlifted to a Brisbane hospital in a stable condition. The Australian Broadcasting Corporation reported that the animal involved in the incident was a lion and that the woman lost an arm. The zoo said in a statement posted on social media on Sunday afternoon that the woman was watching zookeepers working in the carnivore precinct when the animal grabbed her by the arm. It said that at no stage did the animal leave its enclosure and there was no risk to the public. The zoo said that the animal involved would not be put down or punished in any way. "Police and Workplace Health and Safety personnel are investigating this incident and have been onsite all morning. The zoo is working with them to establish how this incident occurred," it said. Each bike is estimated by the team to have cost 13,000 euros ($15,311.40). "The door of the workshop truck was forced open, and 11 of our LOOK Cycle bikes were stolen despite the security measures that had been put in place," the team said in a statement. "The Cofidis team strongly condemns this act of incivility and calls on the perpetrators to act with civility and responsibility." The team added that police officers visited the hotel to document the burglary and had begun their investigation.
