Planning a trip to Malaysia in June? Brace for hours-long jams at Singapore checkpoints

Malay Mail23-05-2025

SINGAPORE, May 23 — The Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) here has warned travellers to expect 'very heavy' traffic at land checkpoints with Malaysia during the June school holidays and Hari Raya Haji weekend.
The congestion period will span from May 31 to June 29 for school holidays, with an additional surge expected during the Hari Raya Haji long weekend from June 6 to 9, CNA reported.
Travellers should consequently expect much longer waiting times to clear immigration during these peak periods.
The authority also advised motorists checking traffic conditions before beginning any journey to the checkpoints.
Cross-border bus services are recommended as an alternative to avoid the worst of the vehicle congestion.
During the recent Wesak Day weekend in May, car travellers faced waiting times of up to three hours due to traffic backup from Malaysia.
The ICA stressed that travellers must cooperate with officers and maintain proper traffic discipline.
More than 3 million people crossed both land checkpoints during the Wesak Day period, with over 546,000 clearing immigration on the peak day of May 9.
ICA has warned it will take action against those who fail to follow instructions during the busy travel period.

Malaysians flock to Thailand for Hari Raya Aidiladha getaway

KUALA LUMPUR: A growing number of Malaysians are opting to cross the border into southern Thailand for a festive getaway this Hari Raya Aidiladha, swapping the traditional homecoming journey for a holiday experience abroad. According to Buletin Utama, Customs officials reported that more than 13,000 individuals were recorded crossing the border checkpoint. This included 7,000 Thai nationals, nearly 5,000 Malaysians, and the remainder from other foreign countries. A survey found that the Immigration, Customs, Quarantine and Security (ICQS) complex in Padang Besar was bustling with Malaysians heading into Thailand, as outbound traffic from Malaysia continued to rise. Many travellers were seen in vehicles bearing local registration plates. When asked, travellers said they were seeking a festive experience in popular southern Thai destinations such as Satun and Hat Yai. "For us, it's a last-minute plan due to the school holidays, and I wanted to bring the family into Thailand," said Mohd Isyraq Abdul Sani, a traveller from Johor. "Previously, we drove, but this time we're taking the KTMB train because we're concerned about heavy traffic," said Tan Kok Way, a traveller from Kedah. In addition to sightseeing, some motorists are using Thailand as an alternative route to reach their hometowns in Kelantan, as the journey is shorter — despite the need to pass through two international checkpoints. "This route is shorter, and it makes a big difference compared to the usual way. Also, there's no traffic jam when travelling through Thailand. It takes about three and a half hours, whereas within Malaysia, it would take around seven to eight hours," said road user Muhammad Fakhrul Azim Abdullah.

Aidiladha exodus clogs major highways, tidal lane activated on Sungai Besi Highway

KUALA LUMPUR, June 6 — Traffic flow on several major highways was reported to be congested and slow as of 5 pm this evening, following an increase in city folk vehicles leaving to celebrate Aidiladha in their hometowns. A spokesperson for the Malaysian Highway Authority (LLM) said traffic flow on the Kuala Lumpur-Karak Highway (KLK) had increased from the eastbound direction in Gombak to Genting Sempah. On the North-South Expressway (PLUS), traffic on the E2 route was also reported to be slow northbound from Pasir Gudang to Dato' Onn and from Senai Utara to Sedenak, and the same situation was also reported for the southbound route from Universiti Putra Malaysia to Nilai Utara, Nilai to Bandar Ainsdale and Seremban to Pedas Linggi. 'Traffic is also congested on the PLUS Highway, route E1 northbound from Bukit Lanjan to Rawang Selatan, Sungai Buaya to Bukit Beruntung, Bukit Tagar to Lembah Beringin and from Juru to Perai. 'Meanwhile, on the PLUS E1 in the southbound direction, the same situation also occurs from Juru Auto City to the Juru Toll Plaza,' he said when contacted by Bernama today. However, he said that the East Coast Highway (LPT) 1 and 2 are still smooth and under control in both directions. 'However, congestion is reported on the Sungai Besi Highway, therefore a tidal lane has been activated after the Mines Selatan Toll Plaza to UPM/Putrajaya from 4 pm to 8 pm tonight,' he said. — Bernama
