Sheikh Mohammed visits UAE Pavilion at Expo 2025 Osaka
Dubai: His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, visited the UAE Pavilion at Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai today, reaffirming the UAE's commitment to global dialogue and its future-focused vision for collective progress.
Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai is the first World Expo to be held following Expo 2020 Dubai — a landmark event that brought together 192 nations and over 24 million visitors in the UAE.
Sheikh Mohammed was received by Shihab Ahmed Al Faheem, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the UAE to Japan and Commissioner General of the UAE Pavilion at Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai.
Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid said, 'The UAE's participation in Expo Osaka reflects our deep commitment to global cooperation and our firm belief that knowledge exchange, innovation, and collaborative action are key to building a better future. Having brought the world together at Expo 2020 Dubai, we continue to play a constructive role in connecting cultures, fostering exchange of knowledge and advancing shared progress. The UAE remains deeply engaged in efforts to shape a more sustainable and inclusive world, actively contributing to the development of ideas and solutions that improve lives and promote human wellbeing.'
Sheikh Mohammed praised the exceptional efforts behind the Pavilion's design and extended his gratitude to Sheikha Mariam bint Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Chairperson of the Presidential Court for National Projects, for her leadership in overseeing the Pavilion's design.
The Pavilion blends tradition and innovation in both content and architecture. Inspired by the UAE's iconic date palm, the structure reinterprets traditional areesh architecture. At its core stands a dramatic installation of 90 soaring palm rachis columns, reaching up to 16 metres in height.
The visit provided Sheikh Mohammed with a first-hand look at the Pavilion themed 'Earth to Ether'—an immersive multisensory journey that showcases the UAE's transformation from its early beginnings to its role today as a leader in space exploration, sustainable innovation, and human-centred healthcare.
The UAE Pavilion presents three national priorities that define the country's future ambitions and global contributions:
● Explorers of Space: From the Emirates Mars Mission (Hope Probe) to the Rashid Rover lunar mission and future asteroid exploration, the UAE is expanding the frontiers of space science while nurturing the next generation of space pioneers.
● Catalysts of Healthcare: Having experienced a transformative journey in public health over the past five decades, the UAE now leads in precision medicine, genomics, and preventative healthcare—driven by a vision that places dignity and innovation at the core of community well-being.
● Stewards of Sustainability: Rooted in the wisdom of its ancestors, the UAE is investing in renewable energy, climate resilience, and sustainable infrastructure. These efforts reflect a national drive to create a balanced and regenerative future for all life on Earth and beyond.
Sheikh Mohammed also stopped at a section showcasing the UAE's journey with World Expos, which began at Expo 1970 Osaka, when Abu Dhabi presented its first pavilion, marking the nation's debut on the international stage just prior to the formation of the union in 1971. Since then, the UAE has participated in seven Expos, culminating in its role as the host of Expo 2020 Dubai, the first World Expo held in the MEASA region.
During the visit, His Highness also underscored the enduring relationship between the UAE and Japan and the positive impact of the country's Expo 2025 Osaka participation on the bilateral relationship. With roots dating back to the early 20th century, and official diplomatic relations starting in 1972, the bilateral partnership has grown across many different sectors from energy, technology, and trade, to culture—guided by shared values of respect, trust, and continuity.
At the conclusion of the visit, His Highness expressed his deep appreciation to all the teams and the UAE mission at Expo 2025 Osaka for their efforts in telling the UAE's success story and forging new global partnerships that support the nation's future vision.
His Highness was accompanied on the visit by Khalifa Saeed Sulaiman, Chairman of Protocols for the Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE.

Emirati architect to pick best pavilions at Expo 2025 Osaka
An Emirati architect has been selected by the BIE, the governing body for World Expos, to serve on a jury that will award the best pavilions at the Expo 2025 Osaka. For Ahmed Bukhash, being asked to be part of a nine-member team that will choose the Official Participant Awards is a special honour, as he has deep links to Japan where he spent several years as a postgraduate student. It shows the beauty of Expo and what every country has to offer Ahmed Bukhash, Emirati architect Mr Bukhash is also the only Emirati architect to have designed a pavilion at Expo 2020 Dubai. The stark, white tent-like structure is one of the legacies that remains on the Expo City Dubai site, and has been redesigned as a museum on the world's fair. 'It is honestly a lifelong dream not only to design an Expo pavilion in Dubai but also to be selected as a jury member in Japan, which I call my second home,' Mr Bukhash told The National. 'It is a true privilege.' Heartfelt message Mr Bukhash just returned to the UAE after the first round of evaluations last month, when jurors assessed large and medium-sized pavilions at the Osaka Expo. The world's fair has welcomed more than five million visitors since it opened in April, with over 150 nations taking part. The jurors return to Japan for the second round in October after which the winners will be announced in a ceremony on October 12, a day before the Expo ends. Pavilions are judged on architecture, interior design and their connection to the Osaka Expo theme "Designing a future society of our lives". When The National visited the Osaka Expo, some eye-catching pavilions that had people waiting in queues included those of Austria, Bahrain, France, Germany, Switzerland and Uzbekistan. Mr Bukhash cannot reveal any details about the favourites but says the message must be "heartfelt". 'My advice for anybody travelling to the Expo is please do your own research because you will be surprised that regardless of scale, some of the content in terms of innovation, how to improve people's lives, whether through AI, technology, energy, is productive for our time and age,' he said. 'It shows the beauty of Expo and what every country has to offer.' The awards for large, medium and small pavilions, and those that use shared spaces, are typically announced at the end of the six-month fair to encourage people to visit all venues. Judges exclude themselves when the team visits their home country pavilion to avoid a conflict of interest. Shaded spaces Mr Bukhash was pleased to see a focus on shaded spaces at the Osaka Expo similar to the attempt in Dubai to offer visitors respite from the summer heat. 'I was very happy to see architectural interventions that provide shading, spaces that reflect a kind of canopy system around the pavilion,' he said. 'Our main challenge is the changing global climate. That is a problem that we are facing as we experience higher than normal exposure to the heat.' As a student, Mr Bukhash studied the Japanese language for a year in Japan in 2003 before completing a master's degree in architecture at the Kyoto Institute of Technology. His education there is reflected in the work handled by Archidentity, the design studio he runs in Dubai. Clean, uncluttered lines dominate residential villa, mosque projects and work on a Japanese school in Dubai. People-centric designs that adapt to the local environment are key. 'It's no longer about having extraordinary energy boosted into air-conditioning systems, but you really need to look at passive solutions to provide shading and a comfortable temperature,' Mr Bukhash said. 'A natural ventilation system protects us from the heat and allows for the natural flow of wind.' Legacy design Mr Bukhash was also a judge for the Dubai Expo 2020 where the Saudi, Dutch, Singaporean and Japanese pavilions were among those awarded for architectural and design excellence. Working with the Expo in Dubai had an impact as he always factors in how the space can be used in the future. 'We always try to consider the past and future requirements,' he said. 'When we design buildings, we think of how to expand its lifespan, so that as the family expands, so does the building with them. "This is something we learnt when designing the Expo pavilion when we had to look at the immediate requirements and the legacy of what will happen post-Expo.' Mr Bukhash's message to young students is to embrace technology, design with sensitivity and always think of the future. 'Technology is the way forward to provide innovation and it does not matter whether the client has an open or restricted budget, you should always design with sensitivity, care and efficiency,' he said. 'You should consider the legacy so that it serves well in terms of any expansion in the future.'

Sheikh Khaled clears Dhs4.62b housing benefits for 3,052 citizens
Under the directives of President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, in his capacity as Ruler of Abu Dhabi, His Highness Sheikh Khaled Bin Mohamed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Executive Council, has approved a housing benefits package worth Dhs4.62 billion, benefiting 3,052 Emirati citizens across the emirate. The approved housing benefits package includes housing loans amounting to Dhs4.4 billion benefiting 2,862 citizens, and exemptions from housing loan repayments totalling Dhs212 million benefiting 190 citizens, limited-income retirees and beneficiaries of deceased citizens. The disbursement of the second housing package of 2025 comes ahead of Eid Al Adha and reflects the leadership's ongoing commitment to comprehensive development, enhancing the well-being and stability of Emirati families, empowering them to actively contribute to the nation's progress, in line with UAE Year of Community objectives aimed at strengthening social cohesion and reinforcing community solidarity. This package brings the total housing benefits delivered to citizens in Abu Dhabi in 2025 to Dhs11.38 billion. Mohamed Ali Al Shorafa, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Abu Dhabi Housing Authority, said, 'The new housing benefits package reflects the leadership's commitment to empowering citizens through the provision of quality housing that promotes family stability and elevates quality of life.
