60 pounds of fentanyl found in Interstate 5 traffic stop near Brownsville, police say
A 46-year-old man from Mexico was arrested May 20 after police said they found 60 pounds of powdered fentanyl during a traffic stop on Interstate 5 northbound in Linn County.
According to Oregon State Police, a trooper pulled over a white Chevrolet Impala at about 2 p.m. on I-5 northbound north of Brownsville after an unlawful lane change.
During the stop, the man told police he was going to Salem, but on further questioning he said he did not know anyone in Salem, court documents allege.
The man, who had been living in Oakland, California, gave police permission to search the vehicle, and a K-9 unit found 25 vacuum sealed packages of fentanyl in the trunk, according to an OSP press release.
According to the U.S. Attorney's Office, the man made an appearance before a judge on May 21 but had not been arraigned.
He faces charges of possessing fentanyl with the intent to distribute, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office.

Santa Rosa man, his 3 children seriously injured in crash
Santa Rosa Police on Tuesday said they are investigating after a crash that seriously injured a man and his three children on Monday. The crash happened around 2:30 p.m. near West 3rd Street and Arboleda Drive, and it involved a red 2002 Honda Odyssey minivan and a white 2019 Ford Ranger that is owned by the city of Santa Rosa. According to police, the minivan driver was initially going eastbound on West 3rd Street in the left lane when he moved to the right lane to pass two vehicles. Around the same time, a Ford Ranger in the right lane began to merge to the left because the roadway narrows into one lane. As it merged, police said the minivan driver tried to pass the Ford Ranger and hit the rear left side of the truck with the front right side of the minivan. The minivan then struck two trees that were in the median. Police said the minivan driver was a 44-year-old Santa Rosa man and that his three boys were occupants in the vehicle. The man, his 12-year-old, 11-year-old and 5-year-old were all seriously injured. Police said they believe the 5-year-old was in the front passenger seat in a booster seat; the 11-year-old was in the second row behind the driver; and the 12-year-old was in the third row behind his brother. Police said the man remains at a local hospital in critical condition, and the boys are at a Bay Area hospital with serious injuries. Investigators said the city employee was not under the influence of drugs or alcohol at the time of the crash, and that he did not require medical treatment. Police said, "due to the medical condition of the minivan driver, additional investigation is required to determine if he was impaired." The crash remains under investigation.

Protesters stops eviction at Caltrans-owned home in El Sereno
Protesters in El Sereno stopped Los Angeles County deputies from evicting a 70-year-old man from a state-owned home that has remained vacant for decades. Benito Flores moved into the Caltrans-owned home during the pandemic. He's called himself a "reclaimer" of one of the more than 100 homes that've sat vacant for decades because of the failed 710 Freeway expansion. "I'm going to fight the eviction," he said. "Caltrans have 170 houses empty for 20 years, why? This is an absurdity." Before the pandemic, Flores had lived in his car for more than a decade and eventually seized the vacant home roughly five years ago. He formally moved into the house after signing a lease with the Housing Authority of the City of Los Angeles. However, the agreement ended two years ago. "I will die in the street because I have diabetes," Flores said. "I will die as a martyr to call attention around the housing program." Flores said HACLA violated the agreement by not providing him housing prior to the eviction notice. HACLA denied his claims. The city said they gave Flores referrals to multiple affordable housing sites and an emergency housing voucher, but he refused. Flores denied refusing the offers from HACLA. He said he'll resist arrest until the end. "I made a cabin in the top of the tree and I am going to go and wait for the sheriff there," he said. HACLA said it still wants to avoid locking out any of the so-called reclaimers, adding that it has offered financial settlements. Flores is still hopeful he'll be able to stay. "We have the right to live here," he said. "We have the right to purchase these properties under the Roberti Law."

Kobe and Gigi Bryant mural in downtown LA vandalized again
After being restored recently, the Kobe and Gianna Bryant mural in downtown Los Angeles has been vandalized once again. The mural, located at 1361 Main St., Los Angeles, depicts the legendary Laker with his daughter when she was a toddler. Artist Sloe_motions created the mural shortly after Kobe, Gigi, and seven others died in a helicopter crash on Jan. 26, 2020. "This was the first mural I ever did for Kobe," the artist said after the first vandalism. After restoring the piece of art that started his dedication to Kobe and Gigi's memory in May, Sloe Motion said he was disappointed to see the mural again covered in graffiti. The mural was covered with graffiti after artist Sloe Motions restored it recently. dtlainsider | Instagram "We didn't want that disrespect to LA right here and for people to see that, especially Vanessa," Sloe Motion said. "Kobe has brought nothing but light and insight and inspiration to the youth." Sloe Motions started an online fundraiser after the initial vandalism in April. It caught the eye of Laker star Luka Dončić, who donated $5,000 to help restore the mural. "Kobe is LA. He and Gigi mean so much to this city, to the Lakers organization and to me personally," Dončić said in a statement. "I'm happy to do anything to help make sure he and his daughter are honored." Sloe Motion painted the mural shortly after the deadly helicopter crash and went one to paint dozens more. However, it was his first that gave him the opportunity to meet Kobe's widow, Vanessa Bryant, two years later. "This is Los Angeles," Bryant said in a commercial for Super Bowl LVI while parked in front of the mural. "The city of angels. Where iconic teams, where iconic moments and where icons have etched their place in the storybook of history. Where nothing is impossible without a lot of hard work and a little imagination."
