Bills mounting list of injuries grows to 15 players, with additions of WRs Shakir and Palmer
McDermott followed the Bills day off by opening his pre-practice news conference listing 15 members of Buffalo's 91-player roster as either being limited or not practicing.
Shakir was among the latest additions and listed week to week with a high ankle sprain after he was hurt during the Bills annual Red and Blue scrimmage at their home stadium on Friday.
Also injured Friday were receiver Josh Palmer (groin), one of the team's prized offseason free agent additions, and linebacker Shaq Thompson (groin).
The injuries have particularly hit Buffalo's receivers, with Curtis Samuel (hamstring) and backup Kaden Prather also sidelined. That leaves Keon Coleman as the only projected starter still healthy with Buffalo preparing to open the preseason by hosting the New York Giants on Saturday.
'What we've tried to do is pull back on some things in hopes of getting some numbers back. And that hasn't helped,' McDermott added, in reference to cutting back on the number and length of padded practices. 'We're moving forward. It's time for us to go and we got to get some work done and move this team forward.'
The most serious injury has been to rookie cornerback Maxwell Hairston, who is out indefinitely after spraining a ligament in his right knee last week. Hairston is watching practice on crutches with no definitive timetable for his return.
'It's going to take some time. He's week to week,' McDermott said of the first-round draft pick who was competing for a starting job opposite Christian Benford.
'Here's a young player that is not only missing just the moving around, but also the mental part of the experience you get with through the reps,' he added. 'So there's no way to avoid it, he's going to be behind when he comes back.'

Injuries have been an issue for the five-time defending AFC East champions since opening training camp with four players on injured lists, including tight end Dawson Knox (calf) and right tackle Spencer Brown (back). Of those four, backup center Sedrick Van Pran-Granger (calf) remains sidelined with McDermott hoping the player will be available to return in time for Buffalo's preseason finale at Tampa Bay on Aug. 23.
Brown resumed practicing on Sunday as did starting linebacker Terrel Bernard, who missed a week with a hamstring injury.
The rash of injuries has also affected Buffalo's special teams unit with kicker Tyler Bass sidelined with a pelvis issue.

The 23-year-old Horton has not allowed a run in his last 23 1/3 innings, dating back to July 9 against Minnesota. GIANTS 4, PIRATES 2 PITTSBURGH (AP) — Dominic Smith hit a go-ahead double in the ninth inning, and San Francisco rallied for a win over Pittsburgh. Jung Hoo Lee hit a one-out double down the right-field line off Dennis Santana (3-4). Smith, pinch hitting for Christian Koss, brought Lee in with another double to right to make it 3-2 and Patrick Bailey extended the lead with an RBI single. David Bednar goes longer than expected for his 1st Yankees save to end their 5-game skid
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — David Bednar got his first save for the New York Yankees after going a little longer than expected, and ended their five-game losing streak before going home. Bednar got the final five outs, all on strikeouts, in their 3-2 win at Texas on Wednesday. The game-ending one came with two runners on base after manager Aaron Boone had gone to the mound with the intention of pulling the right-hander that New York acquired from Pittsburgh at the trade deadline last Thursday. 'I said, 'I'm going to take you here.' And he gave me a look like, no you're not,' Boone said. 'He absolutely wanted the ball and, you know, felt like his stuff was still there. … What a great, gutsy effort.' Bednar's 18th save overall this season came in his third appearance for the Yankees (61-54), who remained ahead of Texas for the American League's third and final wild-card spot. They have a day off before opening a three-game series against AL West-leading Houston at home on Friday night after Bednar's first two series with New York were on the road. Bednar had two strikeouts to end the eighth and two more to open the ninth before Corey Seager walked on six pitches and Marcus Semien grounded a 3-1 pitch through the right side of the infield for a single. Bednar, already at a season-high 36 pitches and with cleanup hitter Adolis García headed to the plate, initially didn't see his new manager walking toward him. 'I was just kind of getting my mind right to face García,' Bednar said. 'I told (Boone) I wanted him and, you know, he agreed. And I just wanted to bear down and get that last one.' Bednar struck out García, finishing with a season-high 42 pitches for his most since 43 in an eight-out save for the Pirates at St. Louis on June 15, 2022. It was the third time this season Bednar recorded five outs, and the second in his week with the Yankees. Josh Allen's NFL success not a surprise to former teammate Eberhardt
Ayden Eberhardt isn't the least bit surprised that Josh Allen has developed into one of the NFL's top quarterbacks. Long before Allen led the Buffalo Bills to dominance in the AFC East, he spent three years (2015-17) at Wyoming, where he and Eberhardt were teammates for two years. The six-foot-one, 200-pound Eberhardt is in his third season as a receiver with the B.C. Lions. 'And after about 10 minutes I look up and he's like 80 yards down the field flicking the ball to me. 'I was like, 'What? This is crazy. College is unreal. I knew the quarterbacks were good but, damn!' Arm talent, playmaking ability, leadership, he has it all so it has been really cool to see him do his thing in Buffalo.' Buffalo selected the six-foot-five, 237-pound Allen in the first round, No. 7 overall, of the 2018 NFL draft and he became the starter the following season. Allen has led the Bills to six playoff appearances, five straight AFC titles and two conference championship appearances. Allen's best passing season with Buffalo came in 2020 when he threw for 4,544 yards with 37 touchdowns. But he was named the NFL MVP last season after recording 3,731 passing yards with 28 touchdowns and just six interceptions while running for 531 yards (5.2-yard average) and 12 touchdowns in leading the Bills to a 13-4 regular-season mark. Buffalo dispatched Denver (31-7) and Baltimore (27-25) in the playoffs before losing a heartbreaking 32-29 decision to Kansas City in the AFC championship game. Unlike his college days, Allen has shown a deft passing touch with Buffalo. He enters the '25 campaign with a career 63.3 passing percentage with 195 TDs and 84 interceptions. He has also run for 4,142 yards (5.5-yard average) and 65 touchdowns. Allen completed 365 of 649 passes (56.2 per cent) for 5,066 yards with 44 TDs and 21 interceptions over 27 games at Wyoming. The 29-year-old California native also ran 237 times for 767 yards (3.2-yard average) with 12 TDs. 'The Josh Allen you see now is the Josh Allen I've always known,' Eberhardt said. 'His work ethic is probably what I'd credit his NFL success to and everything that's come with it. 'At the end of the day, the guy just wants to win and he's going to do anything and everything he can to do that. In college, he showed flashes of these crazy plays of hurdling someone or running around and making a ridiculous throw right on the money.' Allen's humility is also something that endears him to his teammates, Eberhardt said. 'He's a great dude, on and off the field,' he said. 'Obviously, his success in the NFL is awesome to see because he's such a great guy. 'And you can't help but root for people like that. You love to see it.' Eberhardt appeared in 42 games over five seasons (2017-21) at Wyoming — he redshirted in 2016. Eberhardt recorded 50 catches for 764 yards and two TDs while adding 14 special-teams tackles at the school and was named to the All-Mountain West Athletic team in his senior season.
