Wilson edges Trump to win Players Championship
World champion Kyren Wilson won his first Players Championship title by beating world number one Judd Trump 10-9 in a thrilling final.With both playing aggressively, the two best players in the world on current form were tied at 4-4 at the interval in Telford.Trump claimed a scrappy ninth frame after the resumption before Wilson reeled off the next four to seemingly take control.But UK champion Trump won four of the next five frames, making the only century break of the match in the 18th to force a decider.Amid tense exchanges, Trump missed a long red to the corner and Wilson pounced to claim his fourth ranking title of the season, with three of those victories coming against Trump.
He had previously beaten Trump in the Xi'an Grand Prix and the Northern Ireland Open finals in 2024.Wilson was playing in his first Players Championship final, while Trump was aiming for his third title in this event, having last won in 2019-20.Trump set the record for the most ranking titles in a season that term, with six wins.Wilson has two ranking tournaments remaining this campaign to equal that record - the Tour Championship in Manchester, starting on 31 March, before he attempts to defend his world title in Sheffield, beginning on 19 April.Former world champion Trump has won three events himself this term, two of them ranking titles, and has earned the most prize money in a single campaign.The pair will be among the favourites for the 2025 World Championship, alongside Masters champion Shaun Murphy and four-time winner Mark Selby.Seven-time winner Ronnie O'Sullivan is not scheduled to play again until the World Championship after withdrawing from several events for medical reasons meant he did not qualify for the Players Championship or Tour Championship.

Fifa is facing new questions over the increasingly fraught World Cup next year, with the issue of how to treat Iran while the country is involved in a conflict with the co-host the US. There are no provisions within Fifa's regulations to prevent Iran from playing their group matches in the US, despite the country being subject to military action by the Trump administration and Iranian citizens being under a travel ban that prevents them from entering the country. The ban contains an exemption that could apply to players, staff or associated families with teams at the 2026 Fifa World Cup. Iran, who faced USA in the group stage of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, qualified in March for their fourth consecutive World Cup. Although 2026 is also being hosted by Canada and Mexico, only by being given a specific slot in group A could Iran avoid playing in the US, with their matches then taking place in Mexico. If Iran won that group they would stay in Mexico for their last-32 game and any last-16 match. Should they go further – and they have never reached a World Cup knockout game – they would then play in the US. Fifa did not respond on Monday to a request for comment from the Guardian and will likely be considering its options before the World Cup draw, which is due to take place in December. The decision will be a difficult one for its president, Gianni Infantino, who has associated himself closely with President Donald Trump, who authorised the use of US bombs on Iranian nuclear sites last weekend. Infantino and the Fifa Council will have the final say on inclusion in the competition and the makeup of the draw, but the organising committee for Fifa competitions will be expected to have input. The committee has members from Canada, Mexico and Iran, and its chair is Uefa's president, Aleksander Ceferin. In 2022, his organisation announced that Ukraine and Belarus would be kept apart in Uefa competition draws, after the Russian invasion of Ukraine, and his action may provide an example for Fifa to follow. Before the World Cup draw in Qatar, the agreed draw constraints included limitations on where teams could be selected but this related only to a 'general principle' that no more than one team from each confederation (excluding Europe) should appear in a given group.

Snooker party boy no-shows at major tournament as he holidays with new girlfriend instead
An active Snooker World Championship-winning player raised eyebrows after failing to turn up to the first tournament of the new season on Sunday. However, his failure to show up to qualifying in Wuhan saw him having to forfeit the match 5-0. As a result, Brecel will not be allowed to compete at the event - which takes place in the final week of August - and sees him miss out on a winners' prize of £140,000. The Belgian was a notable absentee among a host of recognisable names to have appeared in qualifying, with the likes of John Higgins, Shaun Murphy and Mark Williams all opting to play. Since winning the world title just over two years ago, Brecel has endured a dip in form that has seen him drop to 39th in the world rankings. He has also been open about how he felt under 'a bit of pressure' to perform more consistently after winning snooker's biggest prize. Speaking to The Sun after winning the tournament in 2023, he said: 'I bought two more cars this week, so I went from a millionaire to a non-millionaire. 'It was a conscious decision to buy the cars and maybe feel that bit of pressure again, to recreate the feeling I had of just starting my career.' Brecel has previously shared pictures onto his social media accounts of his Ferrari 488, worth an estimated £350,000. He's also enjoyed trips around the globe and recently admitted that he and his partner have visited '14 countries in four months' as he enjoyed his winnings. During one trip to Dubai, Brecel shared multiple snaps of the couple at high-end restaurant Hakkasan - where dishes can cost up to £300. In the same interview, the 28-year-old also admitted that he's been facing problems with his mindset, as he claimed: 'I didn't go lazy, but I just didn't feel that hunger or motivation going from tournament to tournament. Lando Norris told McLaren have 'already decided' on F1 Championship fight
Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri are eyeing the world championship and have the fastest car on the F1 grid but McLaren may eventually have to make a decision on who they back Former Formula 1 star Ralf Schumacher believes McLaren have "internally decided that Oscar Piastri is the man" that will deliver them a the world championship with Lando Norris still too error prone. McLaren have the fastest package on the grid and lead both championships with Piastri currently 22 points ahead of Norris. That was aided by a retirement from the Brit last time out in Canada after he crashed into the back of his Australian team-mate. The team have adopted a 'let them race' approach but so far Piastri has had the edge over Norris, who has long been seen as the team's darling. The Aussie has won five of the ten races this season, underlining his own championship credentials. Norris has claimed two victories but some believe he lacks the mental capacity to see off his team-mate, who has shown his killer instinct in the past. McLaren refused to back Norris over Piastri last season when he attempted to chase down Max Verstappen for the title. This year they've still opted against picking a No 1 driver with both men free to pursue their ambitions, but inside the garage Schumacher believes they will have identified Piastri as the man to take them forward. Lando shows too many weaknesses and makes too many mistakes, including his senseless driving into the back of Oscar in Canada.' Norris was out qualified by Piastri in Montreal but some strong race pace saw him chase down his team-mate. In the closing laps he looked to overtake his colleague but got his move wrong down the pit straight, later holding his hands up and owning his mistake. 'He has apologised and that shows what a great person he is,' said Schumacher. 'But it's no use, because great people rarely win titles.' McLaren were always open and honest and confessed that their strategy would inevitably lead to their two driver crashing on track. Team boss Andreas Stella has confessed that Norris' incident at Canada may have impacted his confidence with the team needing to help him back. He said: "Obviously it's an episode which cost him championship points. It's an episode that for his own admission he said, 'the principle was clear, I just made a misjudgement'. He never came to say, 'let's talk about it'. This may have an impact in terms of his confidence, but it's up to us as a team to show our full support to Lando."
