Sligo Rovers whizz kid living up to the hype.

John Russell reckons the sky is the limit for Sligo Rovers' whizz-kid striker Owen Elding.
The club has turned into a factory of talent in recent years, producing Johnny Kenny as well as Elding from their youth system, while reinvigorating the careers of Max Mata and Aidan Keana.
Yet Elding could be the best of the lot - the 19-year-old taking this season by storm, getting seven goals to his name already, including a wonder strike last weekend against Shelbourne in Sligo's 3-2 defeat.
And boss Russell is excited by what lies ahead.

He said: 'He is a fabulous talent and you could see in pre-season the way he came back that he had a big year ahead of him and that was why we spoke to the club and said, 'look we need to tie him to a long term contract'.
'I have known Owen since he was 11, when I was working as a development officer in the area; I saw him win a Primary Schools All-Ireland with his local school; and he has been in and around the first team since he was 17.
'I have no doubt there was an element of frustration for him last year, in that he made 25 appearances but only two or three of those were starts.
'But you have to be patient with young players and he has shown everyone what he is about this season and now we can see that he is impacting every game.
'What I love about him most is his mentality.
'Even last week, when we went 3-1 down to Shels, his attitude was 'give me the ball, I am going to make something happen'. When someone does that, that is when you know you have got a proper player and for a kid who has just turned 19, you know he has got a bright future.'
The question now is how far can he go in the game.
Russell says: 'Owen always showed promise but the question always is, when you enter the men's game, can you perform and step up to that level? He has shown he is progressing nicely over the last 18 months and is one of the most exciting and most creative young players in the league.'
Yet he may not even be the best teenager in League of Ireland football right now as Spurs-bound Mason Melia and Shamrock Rovers striker Michael Noonan are absolutely flying.
What a contrast that is from Russell's playing days when experienced pros were in the ascendancy.
So what has changed?
Russell says: 'The difference from then to now is the academy system which was not in place when I was playing.
'Yes, we need more funding in terms of having more full time coaches. But the structures are there and players can come through. That has been a big help.
'In addition, Brexit's law changes means the most outstanding young talents now are in the League of Ireland and in the first team environment at early ages.
'So Owen's development was accelerated by virtue of the fact he wasn't just playing underage football; he was in the first team playing friendlies, training full time, and when that happens, you get to a point when you are standing out.
'It is not rocket science. We all know what to do. But it is a case of putting that structure in place and I feel we are getting our rewards in the league now. And also I feel with more young coaches being in the league, young players are getting more opportunities now.'

'I'll bring some tissues next time' - Verstappen and Russell snipe at each other over collision

GEORGE RUSSELL SUGGESTED Max Verstappen should have been disqualified for causing a deliberate and unnecessary crash in Sunday's Spanish Grand Prix – with the latter then offering his upset British rival a tissue. A processional race at Barcelona's Circuit de Catalunya – which was won by Oscar Piastri as he extended his championship advantage over second-placed Lando Norris from three points to 10 – came alive on lap 64 of 66 when a furious Verstappen and Russell came to blows. Following a safety-car restart, Verstappen fell off the road as he attempted to defend fourth position from Russell. He rejoined ahead of the Mercedes driver but was advised by his Red Bull team to concede the position. Verstappen slowed down at Turn 5 to allow Russell past, but then accelerated and drove into his rival's Mercedes. Drama in the closing stages of the race! 😱 Max Verstappen drops to P10 following a 10-second penalty for causing a collision with George Russell #F1 #SpanishGP — Formula 1 (@F1) June 1, 2025 Advertisement 'What the f***'?' Russell said on the radio. Verstappen later moved out of Russell's way, and crossed the line in fifth. However, he was hit with a 10-second penalty by the stewards – demoting him to 10th – and also punished with three penalty points on his licence which leaves him just one point away from a race ban. In commentary for Sky Sports, Nico Rosberg said Verstappen's sanction was too lenient and that he should have been shown a black flag – an immediate disqualification. And when the 2016 world champion's claim was put to Russell, the Englishman replied: 'If it was truly deliberate then absolutely, because you cannot deliberately crash into another driver. 'We are putting our lives on the line. We are fortunate the cars are as safe as they are these days but we shouldn't take it for granted. 'It felt very deliberate. It is something I have seen numerous times in sim racing and go-karts. I have never seen it in a Formula One race. It felt strange, bizarre and I really don't know what was going through his mind. 'It is a shame because Max is one of the best drivers in the world but manoeuvres like that are totally unnecessary. It lets him down, and it is a shame for all of the young kids looking up to us, aspiring to be Formula One drivers.' Responding to Russell's criticism, Verstappen said: 'Well, I'll bring some tissues next 'He has his view, I have my view. It's better not to comment. In life you shouldn't regret too many things. (I have) no regrets.' Verstappen had just lost third place to Charles Leclerc after he opened the door to the Ferrari driver when he made a mistake on the exit of the final corner in a six-lap shootout to the flag following the deployment of a safety car. Russell then attempted to sling his Mercedes underneath Verstappen's Red Bull at the first corner before the Dutchman took to the escape road and remained ahead of the Briton. 'Max, can you let Russell through, please?' said Verstappen's race engineer, Gianpiero Lambiase. 'What? I was ahead, mate. What the f***! He just ran me off the road.' Explaining their decision to hit Verstappen with a 10-second penalty – which leaves him a distant 49 points adrift of Piastri in the championship – the stewards said: 'From the radio communications, it was clear that the driver of Car 1 (Verstappen) was asked by his team to 'give the position back' to Car 63 (Russell) for what they perceived to be an earlier breach by Car 1 for leaving the track and gaining a lasting advantage (in fact, we had later determined that we would take no further action in relation to that incident). 'The driver of Car 1 was clearly unhappy with his team's request to give the position back. At the approach to Turn 5, Car 1 significantly reduced its speed thereby appearing to allow Car 63 to overtake. 'However, after Car 63 got ahead of Car 1 at the entry of Turn 5, Car 1 suddenly accelerated and collided with Car 63. The collision was undoubtedly caused by the actions of Car 1.'

'I'm getting married, so I'm up to my eyeballs' - Bohemians ace Rob Cornwall

Most League of Ireland players are hitting the beach this week but Rob Cornwall is working through a list of jobs the length of his arm. But the busy schedule is all for a good cause as the Bohemians centre-back is tying the knot with his fiancé Brittany on Saturday. The mid-season break divides opinion and Shelbourne boss Damien Duff has hit out at the 'amateurish' approach of affording players 'a week on the gargle'. Other managers feel a few days of rest and relaxation will do their players no harm at all - and welcome the chance to switch off. But Cornwall has more on his mind with the wedding looming in Co Meath this weekend and laughed: 'I'm up to my eyeballs, I don't want to go away! I just gambled(on the day to be honest. Gambled on a Saturday, hoping it wasn't Sligo away, so I was blessed. "It's a small enough wedding but the lads (Bohs team-mates) are all invited to the day two. Wardy (Keith Ward) is a groomsman. I wouldn't let him do a speech!.' Click this link or scan the QR code to receive the latest League of Ireland news and top stories from the Irish Mirror. Bohs are doing their talking on the pitch at the moment, having put their early season struggles well and truly behind them. And as he prepares to get married, Cornwall admits it is peace of mind knowing that all is well on the pitch as well as off it. The Gypsies have surged up the table and moved joint second after Friday's controlled and deserved 1-0 win over Derry City at Dalymount Park. And Cornwall points to the come-from-behind derby win away to arch rivals Shamrock Rovers last month as the turning point in their season. 'The fans are kind of back on our side this year,' he said. 'You can feel everything's clicking. To do the Rovers game, to do the Pats game, everything starts to flow then. 'We're making Dalymount a bit of a fortress now, which is good. We didn't have that in the last couple of years and we were delighted to get the win on Friday. 'It was different to the Shels game, because when Shels got the two lads sent off, we didn't really take control, but I thought we managed the Derry game a lot better. 'We felt strong and I think performances have been getting better every week. We're getting momentum now, and that's the main thing.' Cornwall was also quick to pay tribute to Sean Grehan ahead of his return to Crystal Palace following the end of his successful loan spell. The 21-year-old left Bohs in 2023 to join the Premier League club and was loaned back this season where he enjoyed a hugely impressive run in the side. Cornwall, who returned to Bohs himself last year after time in America, was at the Gypsies during Grehan's first spell in the side. He said: 'He was only a young fella. Seanie's been excellent. He's only 21 and it's mad that he's done what he's done. He's going to be a big loss. 'I was only chatting to Wardy the other day about how he passes the ball. Some players just hit it differently and he and Danny Mandroiu can fire a ball. 'But we've Leigh Kavanagh there and he's probably going to be away as well in the next couple of years, and you have Alex Lacey coming back. So we have a strong defence.' 'I think we'll be fine' says Cork City's Seani Maguire before jetting off for mid-season break

The League of Ireland's mid-season break is upon us, and Shelbourne manager Damien Duff has again made clear how he feels about it. 'There's an air of the jolly boys out, they are meeting at the terminal tomorrow, they are meeting at the pub in the terminal. "It's a week on the gargle. That's not the football education I had in England,' stated Duff, who recently described this mid-season break as "amateurish." But it's fair to say some of the footballers feel a little differently about it. 'I'm going to Portugal with the family Sunday, for a couple of days, so it'll be a nice little break, just myself, my wife, the baby, and the grandparents,' admitted Seani Maguire, speaking minutes after Duff in the aftermath of Cork City's 1-1 draw with Shelbourne on Friday night. 'I've a couple of buddies over there as well. Yeah, look, I think the mid-season break, you can look at it two different ways, where you can go and just have a break totally away from football. 'But I think the message was clear from the manager in there, that we'll be back in the Saturday, Sunday, Monday, Tuesday and throughout the week leading up to the Bohs game, because this is a big 18 games for us.' That result proved to be enough to edge City a point clear of bottom club Sligo Rovers at the halfway point in the Premier Division campaign, but it was the performance under newly appointed manager Gerard Nash that provides the club with reasons to be hopeful. 'I think we'll be fine. A couple of lads coming back fit, hopefully a couple more bodies through the door, and we'll see us win a lot more games than we lose' added Maguire, who was also keen to praise Cathal O'Sullivan following rumours linking him with a move to FA Cup winners Crystal Palace. Read More Colin Healy sees Kerry take care of Longford 'I think young Cathal will make his own decision. I think he can be whatever he wants. I think he's one of the best young fellas I've played with, and that includes England. 'Not just because of his talent, it's just his attitude towards everything, I think that's what teams in England will look for first, because you can just see it clear as day how good he is on the ball, he's a joy to play with. 'When he eventually goes to England, I'll be gutted not to play with him again, because of how good he is. 'But I'll be keeping tabs on his career, because I think he'll definitely play for Ireland, he's that good, and he'll definitely go and play at the highest level in football in England. 'His first touch is unbelievable, and it's not just his taking players on 1v1, just the basics of football, he does really well. 'He plays like a fella that's probably 10 years older than his age. He's brilliant, and as I said, his attitude is A1. 'He's so strong. Even in training there could be two or three lads hanging off him, and he just stands up. 'You see him in games there, he's getting kicked, he's getting lashes in the back, and he just keeps going and going and going. 'He'll go on to have an unbelievable career, I've no doubts about that.' Maguire also spoke highly of Djenairo Daniels, who he has struck up a promising partnership with in the absence of the injured Ruairí Keating. Cork City's Djenairo Daniels celebrates scoring a penalty with Sean Maguire. Pic: ©INPHO/Bryan Keane Daniels signed for City at the end of April with the club announcing at the time that it was a short-term deal until July. But it is understood the 23-year-old Dutch striker's deal will actually expire at the end of the season, although he could still sign for another club this summer with City entitled to a fee. 'DD, since he's come in, he's done really well,' continued Maguire. 'Obviously he didn't play in quite a while, and to come in and play so many games in a short space of time is a credit to him. 'He's a fit lad, he's a strong boy, he's quick, he has everything to be a top striker. He's scored goals there that are poacher's goals. 'You can see tonight the little, short and long passes, and the combination plays that we were doing, and I enjoyed playing with him tonight. 'I've only just come back in the team, and started to play with him, and I don't want to have that partnership with him, and to see him go. 'Hopefully the club get it sorted, and he'll be here for however long he wants to be.'
