
Space Invaders on your wrist: the glory years of Casio video game watches
Over the last couple of weeks I have been tidying our attic, and while the general aim has been to prevent its contents from collapsing through the ceiling, I have a side-mission. My most valued possession when I was twelve was a Casio GD-8 Car Race watch – a digital timepiece that included a built-in racing game on its tiny monochrome LCD display. Two big buttons on the front let you steer left and right to avoid incoming vehicles and your aim was to stay alive as long as possible. I lost count of the number of times it was confiscated by teachers at my school. I used to lend it to the hardest boys in the year, thereby guaranteeing me protection against bullies. As a socially inept nerd, this was invaluable to my survival. I'm pretty sure I still have the watch somewhere, and my determination to find it has been augmented by a recent discovery: these things are valuable now.
Casio started making digital watches in the mid-1970s, using technology it had developed in the calculator market to compete on price, but as the decade drew to a close, the market became saturated and the company started to explore new ways to entice buyers. Speaking to Polygon in 2015, Yuichi Masuda, senior executive managing officer and Casio board member, explained, 'Casio went back to its original thinking when it first entered the watch market; that is, 'a watch is not a mere tool to tell the time.' We started talking about a multifunction [approach], time display plus other things, such as telephone number memory and music alarms.'
At the time, Taito's arcade game Space Invaders was a phenomenon in Japan. And so in 1981 Casio launched the CA-90/CA-901, a chunky calculator watch that included a sort of space shoot-'em-up but with numbers rather than alien spaceships advancing down the screen. 'We wanted to create a new lifestyle of enjoying the game anywhere at any time,' said Masuda.
But wasn't Casio also inspired by Nintendo's Game & Watch series? After all, this iconic range of handheld electronic games started in 1980 with the juggling and catching sim Ball, and its success led to a vast array of titles, including the famed two-screen Donkey Kong that inspired the Nintendo DS. Shinji Saito, general manager and chief producer at the product planning department of Casio's timepiece business unit, says not. 'In 1980, the year before Casio launched the CA-90, Casio launched the MG-880, a game calculator that allowed users to enjoy digital invaders. Nintendo's Game & Watch was also launched in 1980,' he says. 'In developing the CA-90, Casio utilised the development assets of its MG-880 game calculator, but the starting point for the idea was Casio's development philosophy of creating a new culture using light, thin, short and low-power technology. We were not inspired by Nintendo's Game & Watch.'
Indeed, Casio was developing a wide array of innovative features at the time including databanks, thermometers and pulse checkers. 'Their entire watch range in the 80s was huge,' says watch enthusiast Andy Bagley. 'I have been collecting for years and even now I will still come across a model I haven't seen before; there were many hundreds. I only recently discovered Casio made a range of touch screen watches in the 80s – way ahead of their time!'
Whatever the case, the CA-90 was such a success that it inspired a period of rampant creativity in the Casio R&D department. Between 1980 and 1985 the company produced dozens of different game watches – an incredible feat considering the limitations of LCD displays at the time, which couldn't produce computer graphics or animation and simply relied on matrices of pre-set shapes that would switch on and off to suggest movement. There were several different racing games, there were shoot-'em-ups such as Heli-Fighter and Zoomnzap, and there were very rudimentary platformers including Jungle Star, where you play a Tarzan character leaping out of the way of rampaging panthers, and Hungry Mouse, where you are the mouse leaping over incoming cats.
Some were more eccentric. Aero Batics was a stunt flying game, while Hustle Monira had you helping a dinosaur catch falling acorns (as opposed to Egg Panic where you caught … falling eggs). There were even rudimentary football and golf sims. As with Nintendo's Game & Watch titles they were often merely visual variations on very simple game design concepts. But at the time, they felt like science fiction.
Of course, Casio wasn't the only tech company producing game watches in the 1980s. The US firm Nelsonic managed to get a Nintendo license and made watches with games based on Zelda, Super Mario Bros. and Donkey Kong, while Seiko had its Alba range of game watches throughout the 1980s, including the catchily named Y822-4000, which featured a baseball sim. The most aesthetically wild were from veteran electronic toy firm Tiger, which spent the spent the early 90s crafting gigantically chunky LCD game watches based on film licenses and arcade games such as Double Dragon and Altered Beast. Eventually however, technology and tastes moved on. After the high profile launch of the Game Boy in 1989, Nintendo swiftly cornered the portable gaming market. The game watch era was all but over.
Now, there is a thriving collectors' scene. 'They are incredibly sought after and very expensive,' says Bagley. 'A downside is that they were actually not that well made in comparison to say the all-stainless-steel Marlins, meaning there are not many survivors, hence rarity is an issue. In perfect condition the rarest, most collectible game watches will fetch many hundreds all the way up to £1,000.' For Bagley and other collectors, these watches are nostalgic treasures, recalling an era when kids were disrupting classes not with social media alerts, but hourly digital watch bleeps, and when one publication was absolutely unmissable: 'Anyone like me who liked Casios in the 80s will no doubt remember the Argos catalogue,' he says. 'It was my personal reference manual for the latest available models; I eagerly rushed to the watch section every time a new catalogue came out to check out the latest innovations.'
The watch industry retains its interest in the classic video game scene. In 2022, Timex launched a limited edition range of Space Invaders watches featuring sounds from the game, and earlier this year Casio produced a similarly limited collection of gorgeous Pac-Man watches, sending old fans like myself scurrying to the pre-order section of its website. If you were a slightly nerdy kid in the 1980s these things were your smartphone, your Apple Watch, your grasp at playground cachet. That's why I want to find my Car Race watch; it's not really about the potential monetary value – it's the one thing that really connects me to my 12-year-old self. For all that's been lost along the way, we still have games in common.

Still Game star first made people laugh with his impersonations at school in Lanarkshire
Gavin Mitchell is best known for his role as Boabby the Barman. Still Game star Gavin Mitchell has revealed how being plunked in front of the telly as a child helped plant a seed for his acting career . Originally from the 'lovely fishing village of Springburn' in the north of Glasgow, the 60-year-old is best known for his role as the acerbic Boabby the Barman in the sitcom's fictional Craiglang. His family moved around a lot when he was growing up and he spent a large part of his childhood in North Lanarkshire. Gavin's dad was a film projectionist in Coatbridge and the family had a spell living there as well as stints in Airdrie and Glenboig. He attended St Barbara's Primary, and Our Lady and St Joseph's Primary in Glenboig, before moving up to St Patrick's High in Coatbridge. 'I was all over the place,' he admits. I didn't really have a lot of pals and was sort of plunked in front of the telly. 'I'm not formally trained [in acting] but I think partly through the moving about, it became a defence mechanism - I used to make people laugh a lot at school by doing impersonations.' Gavin's first love was art and it was while working casual at a famous Glasgow theatre that the opportunity arose to take to the stage for the first time. He said: 'It ended up it was a dare, a good mate of mine Iain Muir and I didn't know what we were going to do in life. He was a joiner but didn't finish his apprenticeship. I was doing casual theme painting at the Citizens Theatre and he was doing casual joinery work. "We had the skinny, peely-wally look, with black hair, and he was asked to be an extra in the next show. He told me he didn't want to do it. I said, 'What? I'd love to do that'. "So, he said if you do it, I'll do it and we shook hands on it. That's how it started and from there on in I learned on the job, I was at the Citizens for four or five years, working with Glenda Jackson and Rupert Everett and people like that.' Look Who It Isnae – An Audience with Gavin Mitchell, is about to head to a number of theatres around Scotland this month. It will see the 60-year-old actor offer up behind-the-scenes stories and insight from his years of working in theatre, film, TV and radio. Top of the list will be his time as Boabby the Barman in Still Game, having first worked with the cast members in the mid-90s. 'I worked with Ford [Kiernan] and Greg [Hemphill} on a sketch show in 1996 called Pulp Video and that's sort of where the Still Game characters first started,' Gavin revealed. 'Greg and I played old men in a couple of the sketches, then out of boredom while we were waiting about we just started talking like two old men and making each other laugh, Ford thought there was something in it and wrote a couple of sketches. "Jane McCarry [Isa] was in Pulp Video as well and Sanjeev [Kohli - who played Navid] worked on it as a writer. I was Winston originally. We all kind of met then, almost 30 years ago.' Although the last Still Game television show was recorded around seven years ago Gavin admits he is still often called a p***k by passers-by, a term often-used by Jack and Victor when greeting Boabby in The Clansman. 'It's always done with a fondness,' he said. 'It's kind of weird as Still Game only took about two weeks out of my year. Despite the fact I'd been acting for about 15 years before that and all the work I've done since, I've done all sorts, but I'll always be known for Boabby.' Gavin has taken on a variety of roles over the years, from film, telly and radio, right through to opera. He's been playing Humphrey Bogart's role in Cassablanca on and off for 15 years, a role he'll revive at this year's Edinburgh Festival and at Oran Mor in Glasgow. He has no regrets over the roles he's taken on over the years, in fact it's the opposite. 'That road leads to madness," said Gavin. "It's more about the things you didn't do that you think, 'I wish I'd taken that, I shouldn't have bottled that'. Sometimes it's just down to nerves and confidence. 'It's all about confidence and actors take a lot of rejection, there's lots of things can affect you that people forget. We live in a society now that's so based on fame, success and celebrity that people think everyone just waltzes about going 'Hey!'. Despite his own success Gavin says he would advise anyone thinking of taking up acting as a career to think carefully. He continued: 'It used to be around 80 per cent unemployment in acting, it's now something like 98 per cent. There's only around two per cent working at any time, and there's more and more actors. Is the Nintendo Switch 2 worth the £400 price tag? PETER HOSKIN says the answer is an emphatic yes... and reveals why
Nintendo Switch 2 Verdict: Joy redefined The latest Nintendo console, the Switch 2, is finally here — and a question mark block hovers over it, just like the ones above Mario's head. Is it worth the £395.99 asking price (or £429.99, when bundled with the new Mario Kart World)? In this economy, and with more powerful PlayStations and Xboxes available for less, that's quite an outlay. I could make a financial argument for the Switch 2. Its predecessor, the original Switch, has been around for eight years now. If this new console has the same shelf life, that amounts to about £50 a a pound a week. Most people's chocolate habits cost more. But financial arguments are boring, when the Switch 2 is anything but. Although this is mostly just a bigger, better Switch, it's bigger and better in exciting ways. The larger, higher-definition screen is tremendously good for handheld play. Its more powerful innards mean that it can handle some very visually demanding games, including Cyberpunk 2077, which is also available now. It will come in two varieties: just the console and the console bundled with Mario Kart World. The former will cost £395.99 and the latter £429.99 Can the PS5 and Xbox Series X run these games even better? Yes. But a PC can run them even better again. And none have the easy, well, switchability of the Switch 2, which can move from your TV to your handbag in an instant. Technological domination isn't everything. Then there are the Switch 2's innovations, like its new mouse mode. The detachable Joy-Con controllers can be laid on their sides and moved and clicked just like the mouse for your desktop computer. It adds to the sense that Nintendo has made the Swiss Army knife of consoles. Everything for all occasions. The real draw, though, is the games. Neither the PlayStation nor the Xbox will ever get Mario Kart World, which is a loss for them. This first open-world entry in the madcap racing series is — much like the Switch 2 itself — an improvement on its already great predecessor. And think of all the joys to come! A new Donkey Kong game in July, which looks as though it delivers on its hero's full destructive potential. Followed by, presumably, new Mario and Zelda releases in future. Get saving.

New Nintendo patent sparks talk of Ring Fit Adventure 2 on Switch 2
There are suspicions that Nintendo is planning another Ring Fit Adventure for the Switch 2, although the best evidence in its favour is the first game's sales numbers. When it comes to which Nintendo franchises will see new sequels on Nintendo Switch 2, there are plenty that are guaranteed to happen, such as Animal Crossing, Splatoon, and Fire Emblem. Others aren't so certain, but while we all have our dream picks for Switch 2 sequels (our fingers and toes are crossed for some kind of follow-up to the Advance Wars remake), some fans think they know one such sequel that's planned for the system. The sequel in question is a successor to Ring Fit Adventure and the theory comes courtesy of a new Nintendo patent for a video game controller accessory. As a reminder, Ring Fit Adventure was made as the Switch equivalent to Wii Fit, though its attempts to encourage you to exercise are far more gamified, as it's essentially a fully blown role-playing game. It comes bundled with a special accessory called the Ring-Con (essentially a Pilates ring) and a leg strap that you have to slot the Switch's Joy-Cons into, and it's suspected that Nintendo plans on making a new iteration of it. The patent in question was first spotted by, appropriately enough, Bluesky account Nintendo Patent Watch. Nintendo registered the patent a couple of weeks ago on May 23, and it only went public this week on June 3. While there are no images accompanying the filing, Nintendo Patent Watch writes that that's because they're being 'deferred' for up to 30 months, which lends credence to the idea that this is a new product that Nintendo hasn't announced yet. At the very least, the filing describes it as a video game controller accessory and though there's no mention of the Switch 2, it's hard to imagine it being for anything else. But why do some fans think it's related to Ring Fit Adventure? That's because the filing also identifies the designer of the accessory and it's one Fumiyoshi Suetake, one of the key figures responsible for the creation of the Ring-Con. On top of that, Nintendo Patents Watch reports that Nintendo has previously filed for extensions on its patent for the Ring-Con – once in the US in 2023 and again in Japan in 2024 – which suggests it wants to maintain legal protection for it. The last bit of evidence comes from Foxconn, a Taiwanese manufacturer and longtime partner for Nintendo. During an investor's conference this past May, the company discussed plans for developing technology for video game consoles and peripherals, like controllers. One such example was force sensing technology for 'detecting force under different actions,' with the accompanying graphic looking awfully similar, if not identical, to the Ring-Con. None of these discoveries necessarily guarantee that a Ring Fit Adventure 2 is in development, but there is one piece of evidence that's much easier to put faith in: Ring Fit Adventure's sales. More Trending It may not have reached the same heights as Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Animal Crossing: New Horizons, but it was still a very successful game for Nintendo. Its last recorded sales figures put it at 15.38 million units sold in its lifetime and that was in 2023, so it'll be even higher by now. Part of this can be attributed to the game launching in late 2019, which meant it could take advantage of lockdown , which kept people from getting their exercise outside. Considering Nintendo has had a new exercise game for every home console it's made since the Wii, it'd also in keeping with the company's general strategy to have a Ring Fit Adventure successor on Switch 2. Not to mention that while the Ring-Con is compatible with the Switch 2, you still have to use the Switch 1 Joy-Cons. So, Nintendo may want a new accessory that will work with the Switch 2 Joy-Cons.
