How the lunar elevator would work
Unlike a traditional Earth-based space elevator, which would require materials that don't yet exist, the moon-based design minimizes gravitational tension.
Anchored on the moon and extending to Earth's geostationary orbit, the cable would let spacecraft dock and move along it without heavy fuel.
Lower costs, higher access
Launching payloads via the spaceline could reduce fuel needs by up to two-thirds, slashing the cost of space missions. This would make frequent lunar expeditions, scientific missions, and commercial projects far more feasible.

Critically endangered vultures rewilded after landmark rehab effort in Maha
In a step towards conservation, three White-Rumped Vultures – classified as critically endangered on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List — have been successfully reintroduced into the wild after over three years in captivity. The release - carried out on May 22 in Sawarna, Nashik – is the result of a joint initiative between the Maharashtra forest department and Pune-based RESQ Charitable Trust. The three vultures were among four that had been transferred in October 2024 from Mumbai to the Wildlife Transit Treatment Centre (TTC), Pune, which specialises in recovery and release of injured or captive wildlife. When the birds first arrived in Pune, they were in a critical condition — suffering from severe nutritional deficiencies, deteriorated plumage, and a lack of basic survival instincts. One bird, later diagnosed as immunocompromised, succumbed to a chronic infection despite intensive care. The remaining three underwent a rigorous, science-led rehabilitation process. 'We focused on every element that affects survival in the wild—from restoring muscle strength and flight to reconditioning ground feeding behaviours,' said Dr Sushrut Shirbhate, senior veterinarian at RESQ CT. Over a period of seven months, the vultures showed remarkable improvement, transitioning from reluctant feeders to strong, self-reliant scavengers. Their progress was monitored through regular radiographs, blood tests, and morphometric evaluations. Behavioural conditioning was equally prioritised in that they were trained for sustained flight, thermoregulation, perching and social feeding with minimal human contact inside a dedicated aviary. Ahead of the release, all three vultures were ringed for identification. The largest among them was also fitted with a solar-powered GPS tracker to enable long-term post-release monitoring. Early tracking reports show that these birds have integrated into a wild flock and are exhibiting normal behaviour. Mahadev Mohite, deputy conservator of forests, Pune division, said, 'These birds weren't just from the same species—they were siblings. Releasing them into an existing wild population not only avoids inbreeding but helps rebuild natural social structures essential for the species' survival.' Initial tracking following release was conducted jointly by the Nashik forest department and RESQ CT's field team. It showed that the vultures have adapted well to their new environment. Monitoring will continue over the coming weeks to ensure long-term success. Once a common sight across India, White-Rumped Vultures have suffered a catastrophic population collapse of over 99% in recent decades, largely due to poisoning from the veterinary drug diclofenac, as well as habitat loss and food scarcity. Maharashtra is among the few states that still hosts remnant populations, particularly in ecologically rich zones like Nashik. Neha Panchamiya, founder and president of RESQ CT, said, 'Rehabilitating and releasing vultures is not only ethical—it is strategic. These birds perform an essential ecological function as scavengers. Their return reduces the burden on rescue centres, restores balance to ecosystems, and gives us hope that critically endangered species can still make a comeback.'

Rajasthan CM calls for harnessing youth power for nation-building
A campaign aimed at inspiring the youth to engage in innovative activities to promote environmental and climate action was launched here on Wednesday. The drive will foster a culture of sustainability by tapping into the creativity, innovation, and digital fluency of the youngsters to create meaningful contents. Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma launched the campaign here on the eve of the World Environment Day and unveiled its official poster. Mr. Sharma called for harnessing the power of the youth for nation-building through such initiatives. The campaign has been taken up under the aegis of Jaipur-based Lok Samvad Sansthan (LSS) and New Delhi-based Sustainability Karma. LSS secretary Kalyan Singh Kothari said the youth, including the students of colleges and universities, would be encouraged to produce contents to sensitise the wider public on the challenges of climate change, environmental degradation, and sustainable living. Mr. Sharma expressed the hope that the State-wide campaign, aptly titled 'Voice of Bharat: Youth for Sustainability', would bring about behavioural changes, drive individual and collective action, and contribute to improved environmental outcomes. Hyderabad cardiologist gets US patent for multi-functional cardiac occluder
File photo: Dr Nageswara Rao Koneti HYDERABAD: An innovative device that can fix various types of cardiac defects, designed by Hyderabad-based Dr Nageswara Rao Koneti, who heads the Cardiology Division at Rainbow Children's Heart Institute, has been granted a US patent. Called KONAR-MF Occluder, the multi-functional device can close septal defects in children and adults. It is a double umbrella disc device made of nitinol, a biocompatible nickel and titanium alloy, and is stretchable up to 15 mm. It can treat various conditions, including ventricular septal defects, coronary arteriovenous fistulas, and paravalvular leaks. The device has already been patented in India, Europe (European Commission), Euro-African countries, and South Korea. The multifunctional device not only fixes multiple types of cardiac lesions but also makes advanced cardiac care more affordable for patients in India, as it costs just Rs 50,000 in India compared to Rs 1.2 lakh in Pakistan and Rs 2.5–6 lakhs in other parts of Asia and Europe, said Dr Koneti. Terming this as a proud moment for Indian science, Dr Koneti said: "This US patent validates that innovations from India can meet global standards. It took us over six years to develop the device, and we applied for CE approval in 2018.' He said the US patent now paves the way for a US FDA (US Food and Drug Administration) approval for the device, which has already been implanted in about 10-15 patients in the US on compassionate grounds. "But we can also do clinical trials in the US if required," said Dr Koneti, who is a paediatric interventional cardiologist. He pointed out that the device has already demonstrated its safety and efficacy through over 20 peer-reviewed studies, and over 10,000 of these devices have already been implanted in patients in over 90 countries across Asia, Europe, Latin America, and Africa since the device got CE approval in 2018.
