Diljit Dosanjh is one of the biggest Asian stars in the world. So why can't Indian cinemagoers see his latest film?

The Guardian15-07-2025
He is number one in the UK list of top 50 Asian celebrities in the world, has headlined arenas in the UK, US and across Europe as part of his sold-out Dil-Luminati world tour, and recently strutted the Met Gala carpet in an ivory-toned turban.
But despite Diljit Dosanjh's stellar status, the Punjabi actor-singer has been caught in a cultural and political row that has halted the Indian release of his latest movie, Sardaar Ji 3.
The horror-comedy came out internationally on 27 June and is well on its way to becoming one of the highest-grossing Punjabi-language films of all time. But it has been denied a release in Indian cinemas, where it has been deemed controversial because of the nationality of the film's co-star, Pakistani actor Hania Aamir.
The militant attack in Kashmir on 22 April reignited India-Pakistan tensions, and as a result the Indian government mandated the removal of all digital content originating from Pakistan. Sardaar Ji 3 was filmed in the UK in February 2025, well before the attack, but the Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE) – a film industry workers' union – urged India's Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) to deny the film a release certificate on the basis of Aamir's nationality.
In its first week, Sardaar Ji 3 earned 336m rupees (£2.9m) overseas, a stellar performance for a non-Hindi movie, and recorded the biggest opening for an Indian film in Pakistan.
Experts such as film producer and distributor Girish Johar say the film would probably have doubled those earnings had it been released in India, especially with a crowd puller like Dosanjh as its star.
Celebrated Indian film-maker Anurag Kashyap, a vocal opponent of censorship, argues that Dosanjh is 'India's biggest cultural ambassador'. He adds: 'The ones objecting to the film are simply badge-wearing patriots trying to win some extra brownie points with those in power. And Diljit, being as visible and loved as he is, is an easy target.'
Kashyap argues that the outrage surrounding the presence of a Pakistani actor is a smokescreen. 'It's not about her presence – it's about ideology. Anything that challenges the majority's narrative is blocked.' The refusal to release Sardaar Ji 3 sends a clear message, he says. 'The bigger the financial loss, the more afraid people will be to dabble in non-populist storytelling.'
Asim Nawaz Abbasi, editor of the Dayspring, a Pakistani youth-focused newspaper believes withholding the film may be backfiring. 'The controversy has intensified interest in the film in Pakistan. It feels like the film is being talked about even more, almost like people want to watch it because it was blocked in India.'

Dosanjh remains undeterred, continuing to celebrate the film's global success, even resharing an Instagram video of Pakistani audiences breaking into applause.
Sardaar Ji 3 is not the only Dosanjh film to be put on hold. Panjab '95, a Punjabi language biopic of human rights activist Jaswant Singh Khalra, has been locked in a censorship battle since director Honey Trehan first submitted the film for certification to the CBFC in 2022. The film traces the life of Khalra, who exposed the extrajudicial killing of more than 25,000 people in Punjab by security forces and his subsequent abduction and murder.
Trehan's script was vetted to flag any politically sensitive content. 'Law firms then advise producers to omit parts that might invite backlash, post which the producer greenlights the film,' he says, adding that the state's repeated stalling of the film eventually killed its release prospects.
'It started with CBFC suggesting 21 cuts. Then it went on to 37, 45 and 85. The committee had viewed the movie seven times already, making fresh cuts each time, raising the number to 127. That's where I drew the line,' Trehan says. 'They demanded I change the protagonist's name – on whom the very biopic was based – followed by removal of all references to Punjab and images of flags. What was left of the movie?'
'The goal of India's censor board is to not just censor the film but tire the film-maker,' he adds.

Peaky Blinders creator says Ozzy Osbourne's music is ‘the Birmingham soundtrack'

Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight has said the music of Ozzy Osbourne and Black Sabbath is 'the Birmingham soundtrack' after the singer's cortege travelled through the city on Wednesday. The 65-year-old, who grew up in the Birmingham area and whose BBC crime drama is set in the city, told the PA news agency that the procession, which saw Osbourne's family travel through Birmingham with his hearse, saw an 'outpouring of love' for the singer and the city from fans who gathered on the route. Knight told PA: 'He and Tony Iommi, and Geezer (Butler), and all of those people, I don't know whether people know that they're from a pretty tough part of town and they had quite tough lives, and they just sort of decided to do this thing, to make this music. 'The music, it's so Birmingham because they were working in factories, and that work was very, very noisy, I worked occasionally in factories, and there is always a rhythm. 'There's always a dominant machine, it's like, 'bang, bang, bang', and they just turn that into music, and that's why I think it is the Birmingham soundtrack, heavy metal, and then people underestimate how popular metal is all over the world, so it's incredible.' The procession saw Osbourne's widow Sharon, son Jack and daughters Aimee and Kelly stop at the Black Sabbath bench in the city to inspect tributes, with thousands of fans lining the route around Birmingham. Knight's latest project is Built In Birmingham: Brady And The Blues, a new Prime Video series he has worked as executive producer on which focuses on Birmingham City, the football team he supports, and their takeover by American footballer Tom Brady and US businessman Tom Wagner. In the series' first episode, Knight remarks that people from Birmingham 'don't like to shout about' their city. He explains: 'I think amongst Brummies, there's this thing of, 'don't get too big for your boots', and so anybody who starts shouting out about Birmingham will get that reaction, or previously would have got that reaction. 'But I do feel, really do sense the change in the city, and in the population of the city, the people are actually saying, 'well, it's our turn', and it really is.' Knight is best known for his Peaky Blinders series, which follows Tommy Shelby and his Birmingham gang of the series' name, and has covered topics such as the rise of fascism, Irish republican politics and communist activities through the period following the First World War across its six series. The producer was also one of the creators of Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? and the sole creator of SAS: Rogue Heroes. He is also making a movie in conjunction with Oasis's Live 25 reunion tour. The Built In Birmingham: Brady And The Blues series will launch worldwide on Prime Video on Friday.

Mo Gilligan blasted by the mother of his 'secret love child' after it was claimed he is welcoming another baby with his long-term girlfriend

Comedian Mo Gilligan has been blasted by the 'mother of his first born child' after it was claimed he had secretly fathered a child with the model last year. Mo, 37, who is reportedly expecting another baby with his current girlfriend, has been hit by claims from Selina Christoforou, 35, that he barely sees the child. The TV personality reportedly had a short-lived romance with model Selina, and she gave birth to a son named Rudi in January 2024. The news that Mo had apparently become a dad had remained under wraps until this week, when the Sun reported that Mo had fathered a secret baby and was expecting a second with a different mother, his girlfriend Taia Tulher, 28. Sharing her version of events, Selina said: 'I just finally posted on Instagram about my son's dad so for your information, if you don't follow my Instagram I don't blame you. Um, Mo Gilligan is his dad. Very much in quotation marks.' She claimed that Mo has not consistently been in her son's life, and 'can probably use my fingers and toes to count how many times he's met him'. Selina said that she keeps thinking things will get better for her 'unbelievable' son, but understands you can't 'make someone be a dad'. Selina is said to have become pregnant after dating Mo after they met online and decided to keep the unborn child, despite it coming as a shock to the 'careful' pair. A source told the publication: 'She found out she was pregnant in May 2023 and it was quite a shock for them both because they'd been fairly careful. But she wanted to have the baby, despite the fact they weren't actually a couple. 'She adores their son and Mo sees him semi-regularly. Now he's about to become a dad for a second time and he's over the moon. He has been with Taia for quite a long time now and he feels ready to settle down.' Daily Mail contacted a representative for Mo Gilligan for comment who are yet to come back with a response. Sources said that Mo, who stars on The Masked Singer, is now expecting his first child in a matter of weeks with his girlfriend Taia. It's thought that the couple have been quietly dating for two years, and are now living together in London, according to The Sun. Mo previously split from his girlfriend of four years, actress Sophie Wise, at the end of 2022, and it was then revealed he was looking for love on celebrity dating app Raya. Taia had first revealed her pregnancy in an Instagram post back in March, but had never revealed her partner's identity. Revealing her growing bump, she captioned her post: 'Today, I carry the love that made me, the love I've always known… and the love I've only just begun to understand. 'For a long time, I didn't know when I would share this. But now feels right. Because today, on Mother's Day, I get to celebrate my own mother - and the tiny soul who has already made me one, too.' Mo has previously opened up about the mental health struggles he had during his rise to fame in his 20s, before turning to therapy to help him cope. The comedian shot to fame in 2017 after going viral on social media and what followed was a string of huge TV gigs, including The Masked Singer, after joining the judging panel in 2020. Speaking to Jamie Laing on the Great Company podcast on Wednesday, Mo admitted that he 'lost' himself as the money came rolling in - before therapy helped him break down his walls and connect with people. 'I lost myself, I struggled in a sense of 'Wow this is all I've wanted, I've got the big cheque, but I'm not in the happiest place',' he said. 'I was massively depressed. That's when I started therapy. I didn't cry in my twenties, I put up a wall, and when I got depressed it all came out. 'Therapy helped me open up not so much to my therapist but other people, to let my real personality out and connect.' In 2022, Mo accepted the award for Best Comedy Entertainment Programme at the BAFTA TV Awards and used his speech to speak about his mental health. 'Oh s**t I'm so nervous. I have to big up Channel 4. In 2017 when I got offered a show, my mental health wasn't in the best place,' he reflected. 'Channel 4 brought me into this big building. They rusted me and let me be myself and bring black boy joy to the screens. The comedian was dealt a blow in 2023 after losing two of his television presenting gigs in one week. He revealed that year that Channel 4's The Lateish Show would not be returning after four series, and then his BBC show That's My Jam was given the chop by the broadcaster after one series. He was hand-picked for the programme by American comedian and television host Jimmy Fallon with the show being based on the music-themed segments of the US star's talk show, The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. Mo also presented the BRIT Awards for two yeas in a row, but stepped down in 2023.
