While ESG themes are increasingly mentioned in classrooms, their actual presence in accounting curricula remains limited. Often, sustainability is offered as a single elective or addressed briefly within broader subjects. Most accounting students graduate with strong knowledge of the Malaysian Financial Reporting Standards (MFRS), but little to no exposure to the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), International Sustainability Standards Board (ISSB) guidelines, or climate risk reporting frameworks.
This gap is stark considering regulatory developments. Bursa Malaysia now mandates detailed sustainability disclosures from listed companies. Employers are demanding ESG-aware accountants — yet fresh graduates often find themselves scrambling to learn these skills on the job. Recent findings reinforce this concern. According to the ACCA Global Talent Trends 2025 report, 71 per cent of Malaysian respondents expressed interest in sustainability-focused careers — one of the highest rates globally. However, 63 per cent also reported concerns about not having the right skills for the evolving workplace, especially in areas like ESG reporting, digital tools, and analytics. This suggests a clear disconnect between students' ambitions and the training they receive.
Recognising the evolving demands of the profession, Malaysia's Ministry of Higher Education has introduced Halatuju 4, a strategic blueprint for accounting education. Among its stated goals is the incorporation of sustainability, ethics, and digital competencies into accounting programmes — aligning academic outcomes with the future needs of the profession. This policy marks an important step in acknowledging ESG as a core competency area for accountants. However, as with any broad educational reform, implementation takes time and varies across institutions. Some universities have begun integrating ESG-related content more comprehensively, while others are still in the early stages of adoption.

The success of Halatuju 4 will ultimately depend on how effectively it translates from framework to classroom — ensuring that all graduates, regardless of university, are equipped for the ESG-driven future of accounting. One of the most pressing challenges is the lack of structured collaboration between universities and industry stakeholders. ESG-focused internships, live projects, and case studies are still rare in most public and private universities.
This disconnect is especially concerning in ESG-intensive sectors such as palm oil, energy, and manufacturing — pillars of Malaysia's economy. These industries offer real-world sustainability challenges, yet students often graduate without having engaged with these contexts. Broader surveys support this gap. In a recent Economist Impact–EY study, 69 per cent of Malaysian employers and 90 per cent of employees agreed that acquiring new skills is essential for career progression. Yet 57 per cent of respondents reported that they do not clearly understand which specific skills are most in demand — a problem that has implications for both graduates and curriculum designers.
Modern ESG reporting relies heavily on technology. Carbon accounting tools, climate risk dashboards, and ESG analytics platforms are integral to corporate reporting. Yet, most accounting programmes do not include training on ESG data tools or sustainability analytics. The Malaysian Institute of Accountants (MIA) has recognised this issue. Its revised Competency Framework identifies ESG, climate change awareness, and sustainability literacy as essential future skillsets for accounting professionals — urging universities to embed these elements into their programmes. The private sector is already responding. In late 2024, KPMG and ACCA jointly launched a pioneering ESG learning programme aimed at upskilling accountants in ESG strategy, governance, and reporting. This move reflects wider trends among employers seeking finance professionals who are not only compliance-oriented but also ESG-literate and digitally equipped.
In many classrooms, ESG is still framed as a compliance issue — a checklist of disclosures rather than a strategic business lever. This mindset limits graduates' ability to contribute meaningfully to ESG integration within corporate strategy, risk assessment, and long-term value creation. To meet future employer expectations, ESG must be taught not just as regulation, but as strategy — a lens through which financial performance, stakeholder engagement, and long-term resilience are assessed.
Ethics has always underpinned accounting education. But ESG has added new complexities — from greenwashing to ethical sourcing to stakeholder manipulation. Unfortunately, these dilemmas are rarely tackled in current ethics modules, leaving future accountants underprepared for modern challenges in sustainability reporting. While professional bodies like MIA have begun issuing updated guidance, full integration into undergraduate teaching remains inconsistent.
ESG is not a passing trend — it is now a defining factor in corporate performance and stakeholder trust. For Malaysia to remain competitive in a sustainability-driven global economy, its accounting graduates must be ready. Universities must embed ESG as a core pillar of accounting education — not as an elective afterthought. Interdisciplinary learning should bring together environmental science, social impact, and governance practices with financial expertise. At the same time, stronger industry-academic linkages are crucial. Internships, ESG case simulations, and partnerships with real companies can bridge the classroom and the boardroom. Digital upskilling is equally vital. Proficiency in ESG reporting software, data dashboards, and integrated reporting platforms must be a baseline — not a bonus. The foundations for reform are beginning to take shape. But unless they are implemented more quickly and consistently, Malaysian universities risk falling behind — and so will the graduates they produce.
As ESG reshapes the future of business, the role of the accountant must evolve in tandem. The question is no longer whether universities should adapt, but whether they can do it fast enough. The future of the profession — and Malaysia's sustainability leadership — may depend on the answer.

Bomba D-G: Sarawak to adopt new fire safety compliance framework under amended Fire Services Act
KUCHING, Aug 5 — Sarawak will soon adopt a new fire safety compliance framework in line with national reforms under the new Fire Services Act, said Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) director-general Datuk Seri Nor Hisham Mohammad. He said the changes, which will take effect on January 1, 2026, will empower certified professionals to take on greater enforcement responsibilities and will mark a major shift in how fire safety compliance is managed across the country, including in Sarawak. 'Currently, enforcement is carried out mostly by the Fire Department through inspections and issuing notices. However, once the new Act takes effect, these responsibilities will be gradually transferred to certified Fire Safety Managers,' he told reporters after officiating the Bomba Southern Zone Industry Lead Body (ILB) Seminar at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) here yesterday. Nor Hisham said under the new system, Fire Safety Managers and Fire Safety Officers will be trained and certified to ensure compliance within their respective premises. If they fail in their responsibilities, their certification can be revoked and they may also face fines under the new legislation. The reforms are part of a broader effort by the government to reduce direct enforcement by 25 percent every three years under the Public Service Delivery Reforms, while encouraging industries to take greater responsibility for their own compliance. 'The exact amount of the fines is being finalised in meetings this week as we formulate the subsidiary regulations under the Act. This approach, known as the 'self-regulated approach', allows industries to self-regulate, which is a more progressive step forward as Malaysia moves towards developed nation status.' As part of this initiative, he said the Fire and Rescue Department has been appointed as the ILB for the fire safety sector by the Human Resources Ministry for the 2025–2027 period. The ILB, in collaboration with the Human Resource Development Corporation (HRD Corp) and the Department of Skills Development, will be responsible for overseeing training, certification, and auditing of fire safety professionals. 'In today's seminar (for example), more than 600 participants from the industry community in southern Sarawak registered to learn about the new system and their roles in it. 'The ILB will also act as an auditor to monitor and ensure that Fire Safety Managers and Officers continue to comply with the standards. Any actions taken by them must be approved by the department. If not, it will be considered an offence under the new Act,' he said. Fire Safety Officers will undergo a three-day technical course, while Fire Safety Managers will be required to complete a five-day training programme focused on building inspections, evacuation planning, reporting, and maintenance. 'These managers will prepare regular internal reports. If the reports are deemed credible, the department may renew the fire certificate without a full physical inspection,' said Nor Hisham. However, periodic inspections will still be carried out every two to three years to verify the accuracy of the submitted reports and ensure compliance on the ground, he said. He also confirmed that buildings requiring a fire certificate such as BCCK must appoint a certified Fire Safety Manager. 'For organisations that manage multiple buildings, like JKR Sarawak, we will allow a certified manager to be responsible for a group of buildings, rather than appointing one for each facility,' he explained. Nor Hisham also said the upcoming changes are not just about enforcement, but also about improving industry standards and public safety. Bursa opens higher on US tariff cut boost
KUALA LUMPUR : Bursa Malaysia rebounded from two days of losses to open higher on Friday, supported by improved sentiment following the US move to reduce the tariff rate on Malaysian imports. Washington earlier announced a 19% tariff on Malaysian goods, effective Aug 1, 2025. At 9.10am, the FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI (FBM KLCI) rose 8.83 points, or 0.58%, to 1,522.08 from Thursday's close of 1,513.25. The benchmark index had opened 6.62 points higher at 1,519.87. Market breadth was positive, with gainers outpacing decliners 200 to 138. A total of 292 counters were unchanged, 1,860 untraded, and 11 suspended. Turnover stood at 244.74 million units worth RM111.66 million. Rakuten Trade Sdn Bhd vice-president of equity research Thong Pak Leng said the lower-than-expected tariff is positive news for Malaysia. 'We believe investors will be happier to get this news. Hence sentiment should improve, and we revise our FBM KLCI target today to within the range of 1,510 to 1,530,' he added. Earlier today, US President Donald Trump also said there would be no tariff if Malaysia, or Malaysian companies, chose to build or manufacture products within the US. Since April, Malaysia has been negotiating with Washington, aiming to reduce the earlier-announced 24% tariff rate. The latest round of talks was held on June 18 this year. On July 7, Trump announced that it would impose a 25% tariff on any and all Malaysian products sent into the country, separate from all sectoral tariffs effective today, one percentage point higher compared to what had been announced in April. Among the heavyweights, Maybank, Tenaga Nasional and CIMB all climbed eight sen each to RM9.47, RM13.10 and RM6.63 respectively. Public Bank rose three sen to RM4.24 and IHH Healthcare was one sen higher to RM6.63. On the actively traded list, TWL inched up half-a-sen to three sen, Trive Property and Top Glove both remained unchanged at one sen and 68.5 sen respectively, and Pharmaniaga and NexG eased half-a-sen each to 17 sen and 53 sen respectively. Top gainers included Malaysian Pacific Industries which gained 60 sen to RM20.74, Main Market debutant UMS Integration which garnered 29 sen to RM5.29, and Pinehill Pacific which added 14 sen to 42 sen. Among the top losers, United Malacca declined 10 sen to RM5.25, Unimech reduced six sen to RM1.34, and MSM Malaysia dropped 5.5 sen to 96.5 sen. On the broader market, the FBM Emas Index gained 56.08 points to 11,456.55, the FBMT 100 Index edged up 60.75 points to 11,217.26, the FBM Emas Shariah Index rose 45.96 points to 11,507.63, the FBM 70 Index increased 71.58 points to 16,676.19, and the FBM ACE Index improved 6.53 points to 4,624.74. By sector, the Financial Services Index advanced 120.70 points to 17,273.40, the Industrial Products and Services Index inched up 0.57 of a point to 159.71, the Plantation Index bagged 27.75 points at 7,422.79, and the Energy Index ticked up 1.90 points to 750.24.

Ringgit opens firmer on renewed US rate cut hopes
KUALA LUMPUR : The ringgit opened stronger against the US dollar on Monday as hopes for an upcoming US rate cut increased following the latest data that showed a weaker US labour market, an economist said. At 8am, the local note climbed to 4.2350/4.2550 against the greenback from Friday's close of 4.2750/4.2815. Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd chief economist Afzanizam Rashid told Bernama that the US Non-farm Payroll (NFP) data came in lower than expected and surprised the market. The US Bureau of Labour Statistics (BLS) reported on Friday that NFP stood at 73,000 for July, coming in much lower than the market consensus of 110,000. Afzanizam believed that the US labour market has weakened, which would bolster the case for an interest cut in the upcoming Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting in September. 'Already, the US Dollar Index (DXY) has declined to 98.708 points while the 2-year US Treasury yield saw a steep drop by 25 basis points to close at 3.69% last Friday. 'On that note, the ringgit may gain some strength today, having depreciated by 0.22% on Friday to 4.2782,' he said, adding that the ringgit is likely to trade within a range of 4.26 to 4.27 today. Nevertheless, the ringgit was lower against other major currencies in early trade. It weakened against the Japanese yen to 2.8749/2.8887 from 2.8407/2.8452 on Friday, fell slightly against the British pound to 5.6296/5.6562 from 5.6208/5.6293, and was lower against the euro at 4.9075/4.9307 from 4.8752/4.8826. Conversely, the local unit was mostly higher versus regional currencies. The ringgit rose against the Singapore dollar to 3.2873/3.3031 from Friday's close of 3.2907/3.2960, but slipped versus the Thai baht to 13.0388/13.1084 from 13.0058/13.0319. It went up against the Philippine peso at 7.28/7.32 from 7.35/7.36 last week and gained against the Indonesian rupiah to 256.4/257.8 from 258.8/259.4.
