Lerone Murphy to ‘let it all go' against Aaron Pico at UFC 319 to convince Dana White & Co. to give him title shot

LERONE MURPHY admits he'll have to be the "BEST" he's ever been against Aaron Pico to convince Dana White and Co. that he deserves a shot at the featherweight title.
The Manchester 'Miracle' returns to the cage early on Sunday morning in the co-main event of a stacked UFC 319 card in Chicago.

Murphy will put his eight-fight win streak, unbeaten record and his No.6 ranking on the line when he welcomes the Bellator veteran to mixed martial arts' premier promotion.
And he knows he needs to make a statement against the former super-prospect to make himself the undeniable next contender for Alexander Volkanovski's 145lbs strap.
In an exclusive interview with SunSport, he said: "It's a massive spot, UFC 319.
"You've got Khamzat Chimaev in the main event against Dricus Du Plessis, which is a big fight as well.

"All eyes are going to be on the card. The whole main card is stacked, the whole card is stacked!
"I'm looking forward to performing on that. And now, I have to let it all go, be myself and show everybody that I'm title worthy."
Pico was initially set to face the undefeated Movsar Evloev in a No.1 contender's match before the Russian was forced to withdraw from their showdown.
And Murphy reckons it only makes sense for him to be Volkanovski's next assignment if he gets the job done in style this weekend.

"Him [Pico] versus Movsar was a No.1 contender fight, which the UFC themselves said so," he said. "And if I'm the replacement and I go out and beat Aaron Pico, it only makes sense.
"I'll be 17-0 and will have overlapped Movsar because he didn't take the fight when he could have taken the fight. So all fingers point in the direction of the champion from there."

Even if he doesn't get his hand raised after a viral stoppage, Murphy believes matchmakers should reward his near-perfect octagon run with the chance to become the UK's fourth-ever UFC champion.
"If you don't win the fight [by finish], it shouldn't mean you don't get a title shot," he said. "There have been plenty of guys who have done that.
"The Max Holloways [of the world], they didn't always finish fights.
"Volkanovski didn't always finish fights. It's only once they became champions that they started to finish fights.
"I'm not a casual, I like to watch pure MMA. So if somebody is good, is going to look good and is entertaining to watch, then why can't they be champion?"
Murphy may believe he's in the ideal spot to stake a claim for a title shot, but the risk-to-reward ratio for his short-notice Chi-Town clash with Pico is incredibly high.
A maiden defeat will see the Manchester Top Team standout go back to the drawing board and start his pursuit of UFC gold all over again.
A sensational stoppage or a one-sided display, meanwhile, will prompt the often vocal minority of fans to claim he "fraud checked" long-hyped prospect Pico.
But Murphy could care little about the outside noise, unless it's fans clamouring for him to get a crack at 145lbs gold.
He said: "The casuals are always going to find something to say, regardless of anything.
"I could go out there and KO Volkanovski in ten seconds, and they're going to say, 'He's past his prime.'
I have to let it all go, be myself and show everybody that I'm a title worthy."

"There's always something that they're going to pick at. So I don't watch anything like that."
He added: "People are always going to create narratives that they're going to follow.
"I never look at that, I just follow in my journey and do my thing."
California clubber Pico was once one of the hottest prospects in MMA before vicious back-to-back knockout losses to Henry Corrales and Adam Borics derailed his hype train.
The 28-year-old former Junior Golden Gloves champion has done a brilliant job rebuilding himself, losing just one of his last ten fights.
"I think I'm fighting the best Aaron Pico there has been," Murphy said of his latest challenge. "Obviously, in the early days, that was him transitioning into MMA from wrestling and boxing.

"So he was still putting it together.
"Right now, he's got the experience, and I'm fighting the best Aaron Pico."
He added: "It's going to be a full MMA match. I've got to be dangerous everywhere and be aware everywhere. Obviously, he can wrestle and he can box.
"I'm going to be looking for submissions, I'm going to be looking to time him on the way in.
"There is plenty of opportunity which comes with his style and plenty of dangers, obviously.
"So I've got to the best version of me."

UFC 319 live: Chimaev vs Du Plessis start time, fight card, updates and results
Dricus Du Plessis and Khamzat Chimaev collide in a mouthwatering main event tonight, with the middleweight title on the line at UFC 319. Du Plessis enters Chicago's United Center as champion, having already recorded two successful title defences as part of a run that includes wins over a plethora of middleweight stars – such as former champions Israel Adesanya, Robert Whittaker and Sean Strickland. The South African, 31, has never lost in the UFC, but his opponent tonight has never lost in his entire career. Chimaev, also 31, is seen as one of the most terrifying prospects in MMA, but this evening he goes from prospect to title challenger at last. The unbeaten Russian was seen as a potential future champion from his emphatic, destructive debut in 2020, but illness and travel issues have slowed his momentum. Now, though, he has been cleared to fight in the US – apparently with the help of president Donald Trump – and will look to build on October's victory over Whittaker – a fight in which he shattered the ex-champ's jaw for a quick submission win. Moses Itauma blasts out Dillian Whyte in FIRST ROUND to score biggest win of his young career
KO prodigy called out two rivals in the aftermath WHYTE-WASH Moses Itauma blasts out Dillian Whyte in FIRST ROUND to score biggest win of his young career Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) MOSES ITAUMA sent sheep-eyed Dillian Whyte to the abattoir in one brilliant round. The 20-year-old heavyweight sensation was supposed to be tested by the dangerous 37-year-old former world title challenger. Itauma roared: 'I thank Dillian, it takes two to tangle and he gave me the opportunity to showcase my skills. 'To be honest, for the first two minutes the nerves were there but then I saw an opening that I could not miss and I executed the gameplan. 'What's next! Honestly I will fight anyone they put in front of me. 'If I am honest, Joseph Parker and Agit Kabayel deserved their shot but I would jump in with them lot.' Whyte rolled into Riyadh with a six pack we had never seen on him before and the Body Snatcher stunned the Friday weigh-in crowd when he tipped the scales at just 17st 6lb. It was the lightest he had been in a decade. 7 ITAUMA VS WHYTE LIVE BLOG - FOLLOW UPDATES FROM HUGE HEAVYWEIGHT FIGHT CASINO SPECIAL - BEST CASINO BONUSES FROM £10 DEPOSITS The last time he was in such good condition, 2015, Itauma was 10 years old and had only just followed big brother Karol down to St Mary's boxing gym in Chatham. Self-helper Itauma quoted the 48 Laws of Power bestseller, at the start of the week, when he was asked to comment on Whyte's unusually tame approach to the build-up and said 'you can act the sheep to catch the wolf'. Whyte showed exactly what sort of beast he was when he strolled into a small section of the Kingdom Arena wearing a jacket with a snarling and blood-soaked howler on his jumper. Once the Brixton banger was kitted up, he was caught in a clip warming up by punching a wall. It might have toughened his fists for the upcoming war but it would have been a lot more static and easier to bully than the 6ft 2in rapid and elusive southpaw he was about to hunt. Itauma walked to the ring first and then Whyte - in an old-school move - made him wait an age in an effort to knock him off his warm-up. Whyte's team were arguing before their man even arrived as there was not a warm-up bike in his dressing room. But the wheels fell off as soon as he got to the ring and even a helmet and stabilisers would not have saved him. The veteran threw the first couple of jabs but they were patted out. Then Itauma went to work, first feinted his shots and then pinging in jabs. Then as soon as he flicked a switch he made mince meat out of the Body Snatcher. Whyte was bullied back into a neutral corner and slashed at from every angle. He was peppered to head and body and systematically broken down until he collapsed to the floor. He climbed to his feet but was robbed of all of his senses before he even got a sense of the occasion. In hindsight it doesn't look like he was ever ready for the challenge of the red-hot sensation but after a tough career in rows against the likes of Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua, he deserved an easy Saudi payday. Itauma deserves to be rocketed up from a prospect to a deadly serious world title contender. 7 Itauma is eyeing a shot at the world title Credit: Getty 7 Whyte's career is now in doubt Credit: Getty

Man Utd exploring sensational Old Trafford return for David de Gea just days after keeper dropped cryptic hint to fans
Ruben Amorim has been unwilling to make any promises on who will be his No.1 this season INTO TOP GEA Man Utd exploring sensational Old Trafford return for David de Gea just days after keeper dropped cryptic hint to fans Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) MANCHESTER UNITED are making hush-hush checks about a remarkable return for keeper and club legend David de Gea. The Red Devils have been tipped off that the Spaniard, 34, has a clause in his deal at Fiorentina — allowing him to leave for a relatively small sum. Ahead of their opener with Arsenal, boss Ruben Amorim has kept Andre Onana guessing over whether he will be his No.1 this term. Amorim said: 'It is like the other players. They all have to win their place. I am not going to say if one guy is number one.' De Gea made 545 appearances for United between 2011 and 2023, putting him seventh on their all-time list. But a dip in form and a contract dispute led to his exit, then former boss Erik ten Hag paid £43.8million to Inter Milan for Onana. De Gea was without a club for the entire 2023-24 season but his hunger and form has returned at Fiorentina. United ideally need Onana, 29, or Turkish back-up stopper Altay Bayindir to leave to free up wages. But they could still find a way to accommodate him if De Gea was cheap enough. 5 5 Andre Onana's future is uncertain Credit: Getty BEST FREE BETS AND BETTING SIGN UP OFFERS He was presented with a framed picture by former teammate Bruno Fernandes during a pre-season friendly, which finished 1-1, between United and Fiorentina. Wayne Rooney makes Premier League 2025/26 season predictions but his Man Utd tip leaves pundits shocked 'From the bottom of my heart — I want to say thank you for the reception — for all the love you showed me. 'To the supporters that never stopped being with me throughout my time at this club. Our paths may cross again.' Cameroon international Onana is expected to start against the Gunners on Sunday, despite missing all of pre-season with a hamstring injury. United have been linked with several goalkeepers this summer leading to speculation he may be replaced. Among them are Emi Martinez of Aston Villa, Paris Saint-Germain's Gianluigi Donnarumma and John Victor of Botafogo. 5 De Gea was given a warm welcome on his return to Old Trafford during pre-season Credit: Getty However, Amorim showed faith in the former Inter man during some tough times last season and there has been no new stopper signed this summer. The Portuguese added: 'He is ready to go to the game. Let's wait. You will know on Sunday. 'Myself as a coach, the players who were here last year, we can do better. I have full confidence on that.' Onana returned to training at the beginning of the week after getting an injury in early July. Bayindir, 27, was expected to be sold this summer but has ended up deputising during their unbeaten build up to the season. Antwerp's Senne Lammens, 23, was on United's list but he is now in talks with Inter.
