Game changer Club World Cup star becomes first player to benefit from Lassana Diarra ruling and rips his contract up
BRAZILIAN Club World Cup star Lucas Ribeiro Costa is looking to become the first player from the Lassana Diarra ruling.
Ribeiro starred for South African side Mamelodi Sundowns at the Club World Cup this summer and won the goal of the tournament award for his goal against Borussia Dortmund in the group stage.

But the 26-year-old has now terminated his contract with the club and is looking to be the first player to benefit from Diarra's legal victory against Fifa.
In a long-running landmark case concluding last October, Diarra, 40, won a case in the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) ruling that some of Fifa's transfer rules broke European Union laws.
The former France midfielder had challenged the governing body when he was blocked from pursuing a transfer to Belgian side Charleroi in 2015 after he had terminated his contract with Lokomotiv Moscow in 2014.
Fifa had refused to provide him with an international transfer certificate (ITC) for the proposed move, which Diarra challenged and won with the courts stating the rules "impede the free movement of professional footballers wishing to develop their activity by going to work for a new club".

He has since restarted legal proceedings over a £56million compensation package, while Fifa have amended its transfer regulations.
Ribeiro is now looking to be the first player to use this ruling to his advantage after Qatari outfit Qatar SC made an offer to sign him "well above the player's valuation".
He has referred his case to world football's governing body after accusing his club of acting in an "unreasonable manner".
The midfielder is being represented by Belgian lawyer Jean-Louis Dupont, who won the 1995 case involving Jean-Marc Bosman - the Bosman ruling - and is representing Diarra.

Mamelodi Sundowns have been accused of attempting to "drive up the price" of the player again and again, "without any regard for the player's personal interests, which made the deal impossible".
The legal documents outline that Ribeiro terminated his contract on August 1.
Transfer fees could be SCRAPPED forever after Lassana Diarra wins landmark court case against Fifa
His deal was due to expire in 2028, but with the deal being blocked by the club, Ribeiro said he has "no other choice" than to defend his interests at a Fifa tribunal.
The former Charleroi and Beveren star is willing to take the case to the Court of Arbitration for Sport or a state court after being made aware of interest from some European clubs.

Ribeiro said: "Following the Diarra ruling by the CJEU, there is no doubt that the dispute between me and my former club will not prevent me from continuing my career with peace of mind."
"Indeed, following its own regulations (as amended in light of the Diarra judgement), Fifa will see to it that the international transfer certificate be immediately delivered upon request by my future employer.
"I will now consider what is best for the future of my career in order to make the right choice.
"As a reminder, following the Diarra ruling, my next employer will not be involved in the dispute between me and Mamelodi Sundowns, neither from a disciplinary perspective nor financially."
The case could be the first domino to fall in what could be the biggest change in football for 30 years.

Earlier this summer, SunSport looked at how players could soon be able to buy out their contracts and make mega transfer fees and sagas - like seen with Alexander Isak - a thing of the past.
Major agents claimed the October ruling was the first step towards a US-style 'free agency' for players, with stars only liable to pay the balance of their contracts when they switch clubs.
Top clubs and Fifa have battled to resist such a move, but in June FifPro told stars and their lawyers to be ready to test Fifa's failure to react and use European law to push for freedom of movement.

Harry Redknapp knows just how Eddie Howe is feeling… he lived the Alexander Isak transfer saga nightmare at Tottenham
YOUR best player is being wooed by a ruthless rival club. He wants a pay rise. He wants big trophies. He claims promises have been broken. 7 Alexander Isak is desperate to leave Newcastle United Credit: GETTY 7 The Swedish striker has refused to play for the club again in order to force through a move to Liverpool Credit: GETTY 7 Former Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp found himself in a similar situation with Luka Modric Credit: GETTY Harry Redknapp has been there and done that with Luka Modric. Now, Alexander Isak is at war with Newcastle as he tries to force a move to champions Liverpool. In the summer of 2011, Modric wanted Chelsea — only to end up staying at Tottenham for another year. Many in the Toon Army will hope the Isak saga has the same ending — but the stars have behaved differently. READ MORE FOOTBALL NEWS ISAK'S BACK! Glum Alexander Isak seen training alone at Newcastle as transfer row goes on And Redknapp is not the only one who thinks it is inevitable Isak will end up at Anfield by September 1. But 14 summers ago, it felt certain Modric was off to Stamford Bridge. In his third season, Spurs finished fifth, six points off Champions League qualification. Chelsea, who came second, had just appointed Andre Villas-Boas as boss and sensed an opportunity. SUN VEGAS WELCOME OFFER: GET £50 BONUS WHEN YOU JOIN 7 Chelsea were desperate to add Luka Modric, Harry Redknapp's star midfielder, to their squad Modric later revealed in his autobiography, he was on a speedboat with his management team heading for the yacht of Blues owner Roman Abramovich. Modric wrote: ''Do you think Tottenham will resist your transfer? Are they going to put up a fight?' Abramovich asked. 'That bothers me' - Jamie Carragher tells Liverpool NOT to sign £150million Alexander Isak from Newcastle ''I think the negotiations are going to be tough,' I replied because I knew the clubs were not on good terms.' Redknapp, 78, joked: 'I didn't know about the yacht thing at the time. 'I'd have asked if could if I could have a week on it, too!' Modric's fears proved well-founded. Chelsea offered £22million. Spurs supremo Daniel Levy said no. The Blues came back with £27m. No deal. Modric's problem was that he had signed a new six-year contract 12 months earlier. So, like Isak, he went public with his desire to leave. Modric cited Chelsea's ability to compete for the Champions League and Premier League and said he had a 'gentleman's agreement' with Levy that he could leave for a 'big club'. Shades of Isak there, but Modric took a less aggressive approach. The Croatian added: 'I don't want to fight and argue with Tottenham. I want to go in a good way, a friendly way so I can stay friends with them. 'I love them and they love me but that's the way it is and I have to think what is best for my career.' Although Redknapp was disappointed, he could see Modric's point of view. Redknapp said: 'He wasn't earning anywhere near what average players at other clubs were getting. Harry Redknapp on Luka Mordric 7 Luka Modric didn't go to such extremes to try to force through a move away from Tottenham 'He had a chance to play Champions League and double his money. I couldn't sit there and go, 'It's wrong.' 'I loved my time at Portsmouth, but I left and went to Tottenham. That's football.' The tug-of-war over Modric went on through the summer. But Modric was on the plane for Spurs' pre-season trip to South Africa. Unlike Isak, who missed Newcastle's tour of the Far East because of an alleged injury as rumours of Liverpool's intentions grew. Modric remained professional for most of the summer but asked to be left out of the season opener against Manchester United, saying his 'head was not in the right place'. He also requested to miss the next match, at home to Manchester City. But Redknapp persuaded him to play in what turned out to be a 5-1 defeat and what Modric called 'one of my worst performances'. Chelsea made a £40m bid on deadline day, but Levy stood firm. Redknapp said: 'I told Luka I understood, but said, 'Come on, let's have another year, I think we can do something good'.' 'Luka could have easily thrown the toys out the pram and said, 'I'm not playing, I'm not training, I'm injured'. 'But he is an incredible person as well as an incredible player. 7 Harry Redknapp ended up getting one more season out of Luka Modric Credit: TIMES NEWSPAPER LTD 'That's probably why he's still at the top level now, at nearly 40.' Redknapp made Modric captain and he had an excellent season for Spurs. He earned their player of the season award despite the previous summer's intrigue. Redknapp's side finished fourth in the Premier League and would normally have qualified for the Champions League. But Chelsea, having ended up sixth after another tumultuous campaign, became European champions for the first time under caretaker boss Roberto di Matteo . . . and so snatched Spurs' place off them by virtue of being the holders. Redknapp left Spurs soon afterwards — and urged Sir Alex Ferguson to buy Modric for Manchester United. He recalled: 'What's funny is that the Chelsea manager who had been ringing Luka all the time, Andre Villas-Boas, ended up replacing me at Tottenham. 7 Alexander Isak will have a tough job getting the St James' Park faithful back onside if he doesn't join Liverpool Credit: PA If he plays and scores a goal, there will be 50,000 Geordies singing his name." Harry Rednkapp on Alexander Isak "Sir Alex spoke to me about Luka and I said, 'Take him, take him, he's fantastic'. But Luka ended up going to Real Madrid. 'And that didn't turn out too bad for him, did it?' Real paid £30m for Modric, £10m below Chelsea's final bid of the previous summer. But Spurs had refused to be bullied by the Blues and got one more season out of their midfield maestro. So, if Isak does not get his move to Liverpool, could he win back his Newcastle team-mates and the fans? Redknapp said: 'If he plays and scores a goal, there will be 50,000 Geordies singing his name. The game has been like that forever. 'As long as you're winning, fans soon forget. That's how stupid it all is, really.'

Shamrock Rovers record sensational victory in Portugal to close in on another European group adventure
Stephen Bradley's side showed maturity in the Azores to come from behind and win against a Brazilian-dominated team that qualified for this competition by virtue of a fifth-placed finish in the Portuguese league. With Shelbourne in control against Linfield, it opens up the possibility of two League of Ireland sides competing in the league phase of a European competition. For Rovers, the landmark achievement would be becoming the first side to qualify without availing of the generous champions route. They've got work to do to finish the job in Tallaght Stadium next Thursday. February's knockout defeat to Molde is a clear reminder that a good start on the road guarantees nothing. Still, the position that the Hoops find themselves in is a testament to their increased comfort in this company, with Rovers recognising they had no reason to be overawed by opposition from the seventh-best league in Europe, even though they are flagbearers for the 31st. This was an encounter that didn't quite conform to national stereotypes. An Irish club going away to a Portuguese team would naturally lead to assumptions around a technically-assured host owning the ball against a banked visiting defence. But this was never expected to be that way, with Santa Clara living up to their reputation as a side that thrive in counter-attacking situations. From the outset, it was clear that Rovers would get plenty of time on the ball, in particular deep midfielders Matt Healy and Dylan Watts, with the locals waiting for trigger points to try and press. Rovers needed to be careful and assured and they were relatively comfortable for 20 minutes. And then they conceded to a strike that highlighted how Santa Clara can go from first gear to fifth gear in an instant on their big pitch, with a dramatic switch of play to their left wing, Paulo Victor catching out Rovers. He had plenty of time to pick out Gabriel Silva, whose shot was parried into the air by Ed McGinty and headed into the empty net by a grateful Vinicius. ADVERTISEMENT Sceptics in the away section might have feared this would be the catalyst for Santa Clara to really open up, but Rovers had 57pc of possession before the interval, and the period after conceding allowed them to grow into things, recognising that flicking the ball down the sides and turning red shirts could be profitable. While Rory Gaffney was engaged in a physical battle with a rugged Santa Clara rearguard, the spaces opened up in between and Danny Mandroiu had threatened before the equalising goal. Mandroiu played his part, too, completing a one-two with Danny Grant that allowed the right wing-back to dart infield and he saw glory as space opened up. A deflection was needed to allow his shot over the line, but the endeavour earned the break. Football folk will always say that the first half of these ties allows the teams to feel each other out. The curiosity after the resumption revolved around whether Santa Clara had more in the locker, but Rovers began to look more at ease with their surroundings after a scare when the offside flag chalked out a set-piece effort. Composed defending allied with the quality of Watts and Healy allowed Rovers to navigate tricky passages and turn things the other way. Mandroiu was increasingly dangerous between the lines, too. Yet it was a set-piece that put Bradley's side into the lead, although central characters were involved. An earlier free had also been thwarted by an offside flag, but this time around Watts switched the ball towards Josh Honohan, who flicked it down for Mandroiu, who skilfully manufactured the chance to slot a right-footer into the bottom corner. Santa Clara huffed and puffed but never looked like blowing Rovers away. An epic Thursday in Tallaght lies ahead. Santa Clara: Batista; Lima, Rocha, MT; Calila (Pires 62), Firmino, Serginho (Ferreira 73), Victor (Pereira 85); Vinicius (Manoel 73), Silva; Costa (Wendell 62). Shamrock Rovers: McGinty; Cleary, Lopes, Grace; Grant, Healy, Watts (McEneff 89), Honohan; Nugent (Barrett 94), Mandroiu (Burke 73); Gaffney (Noonan 73).
