Anti-war exhibition in support of Palestine can be held, police shall not interfere: Delhi HC
An anti-war painting exhibition in support of Palestine, which is set to be held on Sunday in North Delhi's Model Town, can be organised as per the schedule without any police interference, the Delhi High Court directed on Friday in a relief to the organiser.
Keshwa Anand, a member of the Progressive Artists' League, a collective of artists based in Delhi that organises art exhibitions, discussions on art, poetry recitations, storytelling sessions, film screenings, and other cultural events, had moved the High Court and expressed apprehension over likely police interference in the event.
In his petition, Anand stated that police personnel had visited his residence on May 20. He sought the court's direction to restrain the police from interfering in any manner with the exhibition at his residence located in Model Town. He also claimed that the Delhi Police had earlier disrupted the screening of an Israel-Palestine conflict documentary, 'Occupation 101', at his residence on May 18.
According to Anand, the police had tried to 'pressure and intimidate' the Progressive Artists' League, and 'tried to coerce the petitioner into cancelling the art exhibition' scheduled for May 25. Anand submitted to the court that the personnel from the Model Town police station had asked him to cancel the event.
Following an inquiry from Justice Sachin Datta as to whether the proposed event is a private or a public event, Anand, through his lawyer Manik Gupta, told the court that he expected no more than 20 people to attend it.
The police, on the other hand, stated before the court that they had no intention to interfere and were only concerned with law and order.
Taking the police's statement on record, the court recorded that the police 'shall not interfere' with the proposed exhibition, subject to unforeseen circumstances.
According to Anand's petition, artworks such as Pablo Picasso's 'Massacred in Korea' and 'Guernica', Francisco Goya's 'The Third of May 1808' will be featured at the exhibition.
A series of other paintings, including 'the paintings of other members of the Progressive Artists' League, which are about 'the sufferings of people in Gaza, who lost their homes during the attack on the people of Palestine,' are also expected to be featured at the exhibition, the petition states.

The one-man inquiry commission constituted by the Karnataka government under retired High Court judge John Michael Cunha to inquire into the June 4 stampede that killed 11 people, has been asked to identify the persons responsible for the omissions or deficiencies that led to this incident. As per the terms of reference to the commission from the government, it has also suggested precautionary measures that can be taken to prevent recurrence of such incidents in the future, among others. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on June 5 announced that a one-man commission would be formed under Cunha to look into the procedural lapses in the issue, and the commission has been asked to give the report in 30 days. The stampede occurred on June 4 evening in front of the Chinnaswamy stadium here, where a large number of people thronged to participate in the RCB team's IPL victory celebrations. Eleven people died and 56 were injured in the incident. "...the Government, in exercise of the powers conferred under sub-rule (1) of rule 3 of the Commission of Inquiry Act, 1952, has constituted a one-man inquiry commission under the chairmanship of John Michael Cunha, retired Judge of the Karnataka High Court, to conduct an inquiry into the incident," the official notification dated June 5 said. Also, to inquire into the measures taken as a precaution regarding the incident and the omissions/deficiencies that may have occurred in this regard and to identify those responsible for this incident; and to inquire regarding other relevant aspects related to this incident. As per the notification, the Director General and Inspector General of Police, Commissioner of Police - Bengaluru, and Deputy Commissioner - Bengaluru Urban district shall provide all the files/documents/etc that the Commission may require from time to time for the inquiry and shall be present during the inquiry and fully cooperate with the Commission. This inquiry commission is separate from the magisterial inquiry that has been ordered, and shall conduct a parallel and comprehensive inquiry, it clarified. The Chairman of the inquiry commission, if necessary, may take steps to obtain the services of one retired IPS officer and one retired IAS officer for technical and legal assistance. The salary/allowance expenses of the concerned officers shall be borne by the government. The Director General and Inspector General of Police, shall provide the necessary staff, materials, vehicles and office and furniture/telephone etc required for the commission of inquiry.

Yemen's al-Qaida branch leader threatens Trump, Musk and others
DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — The leader of al-Qaida's Yemen branch has threatened both U.S. President Donald Trump and billionaire Elon Musk over the Israel-Hamas war in the Gaza Strip in his first video message since taking over the group last year. The half-hour video message by Saad bin Atef al-Awlaki, which spread online early Saturday via supporters of al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula, also included calls for lone-wolf militants to assassinate leaders in Egypt, Jordan and the Gulf Arab states over the war, which has decimated Gaza. The video of al-Awlaki's speech showed images of Trump and Musk, as well as U.S. Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Secretary of State Pete Hegseth. It also included images of logos of Musk's businesses, including the electric carmaker Tesla. 'There are no red lines after what happened and is happening to our people in Gaza," al-Awlaki said. "Reciprocity is legitimate.' Though believed to be weakened in recent years due to infighting and suspected U.S. drone strikes killing its leaders, the group known by the acronym AQ had been considered the most dangerous branch of al-Qaida still operating after the 2011 killing by U.S. Navy SEALs of founder Osama bin Laden, who masterminded the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks. In 2022, a U.S. drone strike in Afghanistan killed bin Laden's successor, Ayman al-Zawahri, who also helped plot 9/11. Al-Awlaki already has a $6 million U.S. bounty on his head, as Washington says al-Awlaki 'has publicly called for attacks against the United States and its allies.' The Trump administration also launched its own intense campaign of strikes on the Houthis, which only ended before the president's recent trip to the Middle East. Al-Awlaki may be betting on the same for his group, which U.N. experts have estimated has between 3,000 and 4,000 active fighters and passive members. The group raises money by robbing banks and money exchange shops, as well as smuggling weapons, counterfeiting currencies and ransom operations, according to the U.N. The Shiite Zaydi Houthis have previously denied working with AQ, a Sunni extremist group. However, AQ targeting of the Houthis has dropped in recent years, while the militants keep attacking Saudi-led coalition forces who have battled the Houthis. 'As the Houthis gain popularity as leaders of the 'Arab and Muslim world's resistance' against Israel, al-Awlaki seeks to challenge their dominance by presenting himself as equally concerned about the situation in Gaza,' said Mohammed al-Basha, a Yemen expert of the Basha Report risk advisory firm. 'For a national security and foreign policy community increasingly disengaged from Yemen, this video is a clear reminder: Yemen still matters.'
