Safari park's new hippos 'are a dream come true'
Mother and son duo, Lola and Hodor, settled into their new enclosure at Longleat Safari Park in Wiltshire, alongside Matylda and Manon from the Czech Republic.
The four hippos are housed in a state-of-the-art complex designed to have capacity for any resulting offspring, creating a self-sustaining family group known as a bloat.
Staff say their arrival is "vital" for the conservation breeding programme for this vulnerable species, although it is too early to say when breeding may occur.
Their arrival follows the deaths of Sonia and Spot, who had lived in Half Mile Pond for more than 40 years.
Lola, 21, and her son Hodor, eight, were born at Whipsnade Zoo near Dunstable.
Their keepers revealed their favourite food was cabbage, which Longleat staff say will "be a staple of their Wiltshire diet".
Darren Beasley, head of animal operations, said it was "amazing" to see the semi-aquatic animals back at Longleat.
"We will be spending the coming days letting them settle in, giving them time to get to know the keepers and slowly introducing them to each other," he said.
"We hope in time to have offspring which will be a huge boost to the international breeding programme, and vital for the protection of the species which aims to stop the move towards endangerment."
Guests will be able to spot the hippos in their enclosure from the Jungle Cruise, which offers trips across Half Mile Pond.
Simon Askew, chief operating officer, said: "We have said from the outset that our plans for introducing hippos has been part of our commitment to conservation, sustainability and education.
"Today has seen a dream become reality.
"It is an exciting time for Longleat and for our guests, who may start to spot the hippos in their paddock over the coming days."

The staggering number of families helped by this year's free school uniform giveaway
More than 100 families have been helped by the annual free school uniform giveaway which took place on Monday and Tuesday. Over the last three years Lend a Hand has been organising the day which takes place every August, where families can pick up uniform items, stationery and equipment thanks to the generosity of local people. Denise Silcock from the organisation said: "We have helped well over a hundreds families this year. "They Mayor and Mayoress also dropped by. "The feedback we have received has been incredible, people have been so touched. "We had one person come in to donate a uniform her child had grown out of and picked up a bigger size - that is the ultimate in recycling. We have had so much donated this year, and people have been so generous. "Everything is so expensive these days so this really does help. The volunteers have been working all weekend to get everything organised, they have not stopped. "A massive thank you must go to all the amazing local businesses organisations and amazing people for supporting this year and helping us help lots of families in the Heart of the Community. A fire is burning one of the world's tallest trees near the Oregon coast
PORTLAND, Ore. — Authorities in Oregon are trying to extinguish a fire that is burning in one of the world's tallest trees near the state's southern coast. The Doerner Fir, a coastal Douglas Fir tree over 325 feet (99 meters) tall and estimated to be over 450 years old, has been burning since Saturday in Coos County in Oregon's Coast Range. An infrared drone flight on Tuesday showed no active flames or smoke at the top of the tree, but it detected heat within a cavity in the tree trunk some 280 feet high, federal Bureau of Land Management spokesperson Megan Harper said. Figuring out how to approach the tree from the side to douse the cavity with water has been a challenge, Harper said. Various options have been discussed, including building scaffolding or climbing adjacent trees for better positioning, or letting it smolder and monitoring to see if it reignites. Crews remained onsite Tuesday and a helicopter was on standby in case of needed water drops, she added. The Coos Forest Protective Association said Monday that helicopter bucket drops had reduced fire activity near the top of the tree. It added that sprinklers were placed at the base of the tree, where containment lines were also constructed to prevent further fire spread. The fire may impact the tree's standing in global height rankings, Harper said. 'We've lost about 50 feet of it, just from fire and pieces falling out,' she said, noting that the 50 feet (15 meters) were lost through the top burning. 'So I don't know where it'll stand after this, but it's still a magnificent tree.' The cause of the fire has not been determined and is under investigation. It is the only tree on fire in the immediate vicinity, and investigators are looking at lightning data to see if there were any recent strikes in the area, Harper said. For now, the tree is not at risk of fully burning down, according to Harper. 'Right now, that is not a danger,' she said. 'The tree is so big, it's got so much mass that it would take a while for it to burn all the way through the tree.' Meanwhile, those involved in the firefighting efforts want to do everything possible to save the historic tree, Harper said. 'I think people really love it,' she said of the tree. 'There's a lot of history there, and so we don't want to lose it.'
