'Very high' wildfire warning issued by fire chiefs as sizzling heatwave continues

Daily Recorda day ago
The vast majority of wildfires are started by human behaviour and the SFRS is urging communities to avoid lighting fires and using naked flames while this warning is in place.
A 'very high' risk of wildfire has been put in place for the next week as a sizzling heatwave continues across the country.

As the parts of Scotland enjoy highs of 28C over the next couple of days a stark warning has been issued by fire chiefs to remind the public to enjoy the weather responsibly and be aware of wildfire risks.

The warning from the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service comes into effect from Wednesday, 13 August and remains in place until Tuesday, 19 August.

It comes as fire crews remain at the scene of Arthur's Seat in Edinburgh after it was ravaged by gorse fires on Sunday into the early hours of Monday.
The fire had engulfed large areas of the extinct volcano close to the city centre.
No casualties have been reported in the incident, but fire crews have battled for more than a day to try and extinguish the inferno, with four appliances and specialist resources mobilised to Arthur's Seat at its peak.

The affected areas across Scotland at risk of wildfires include:
13-15 August - eastern areas
16-17 August - eastern and western areas
18-19 August - most of Scotland, including east, west, central belt and southern uplands.
The vast majority of wildfires are started by human behaviour and the SFRS is urging communities to avoid lighting fires and using naked flames while this warning is in place.

"We know the vast majority of wildfires are started by human behaviour, so acting responsibly can lower the chance of a fire starting in the first place.
"Help us protect remote and rural communities, who can be hugely impacted by wildfires, by following the safety advice and being familiar with the Scottish Outdoor Access Code."

Is it too hot to walk your dog today? Exact temperature that is dangerous for pets

Scots are to face scorching weather today which can pose serious risks to your pooch. The past couple of days have been scorching, with the Met Office even predicting temperatures surpassing 30C in Scotland today, August 13. But while we humans might enjoy basking in the sunshine, our dogs are susceptible to suffering in the heat. ‌ Our pooches are at-risk of developing heat exhaustion or even heatstroke if they're not kept cool and hydrated in hot weather. But with temperatures varying in the mid-to-high twenties for most of Scotland today, how hot is too hot for your dog? ‌ The Kennel Club has issued some guidance on the exact temperature that is too hot to take your pooch outside, as well as the signs of overheating and how to keep your pooch cool. ‌ The dog experts say on their website: "Dogs love walks, but soaring temperatures can make their favourite activity dangerous. Knowing when it's too hot to head out can protect your furry friend from overheating." Here is their expert advice on how to tell when it's just too hot for your pup to venture outside. ‌ What temperature is too hot to walk your dog? The experts at Kennel Club share a guide on their website that details exactly which temperatures are ideal for your dog to exercise and which are too hot for your pup to be outside. Temperatures below 12C are described as perfect walking weather when your dog will be comfortable and ready to explore. ‌ If the mercury is ranging between 12-19C, conditions are safe for most dogs, but keep an eye out for signs of overheating if they're running around a lot. When the weather is 20-23C, however, owners should start to take precautions. Stick to shaded areas, keep walks short, and bring water. And 24-26C is risky territory. The experts recommend only taking your dog out if it's absolutely necessary, and making it a quick, shady stroll. ‌ And finally, if the mercury is 27C or above, it's simply too dangerous to walk your dog. Stay indoors or let them relax in a cool, shaded area instead. Life-threatening warning signs that your dog is overheating The first sign that your dog is overheating is excessive panting. If this occurs, take action immediately to cool down your pet. ‌ Once overheating has developed, your dog may also: Become restless and show discomfort Vomit or have diarrhoea Drool excessively Have an increased heart rate Lose coordination, have seizures or muscle tremors How to keep your dog cool during walks To protect your pup from heatstroke when out on a walk, the Kennel Club shares some additional advice. ‌ Their tips include: stick to grassy or shaded paths avoid hot pavements that could burn their paws always carry water and a portable bowl The experts share that grass or shaded dirt paths are the safest terrains for walking your dog in scorching weather, which are better than pavements, asphalt or sand that can easily burn their paws on a hot day. Tourists evacuated in Greece heatwave and three people die as wildfires spread

Strong winds have helped the spread of the fires in Zante, Kefalonia and Chios. Thousands of people have been evacuated as wildfires spread in Greece with three people dead. ‌ Firefighters are battling the fires in Greece as tourists and locals have been evacuated from blazes that are tearing through Ionian islands. ‌ At least three people have died in a scorching heatwave that is fuelling dozens of wildfires across parts of southern Europe, reports the Mirror. ‌ Tourists trapped by the rapid spread of flames have already been evacuated from beaches on Chios. Officials in Greece ordered the evacuations of dozens of villages amid an intense drought and strong winds that have helped the spread of the fires in Zante, Kefalonia and Chios. ‌ Greek firefighters have reportedly battled some 106 fires across the country, with 63 of those understood to have been reported yesterday, Tuesday, August 12. The Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection issued more than a dozen evacuation orders for parts of western Greece, and warned of a high risk on the mainland and Ionian islands. Greek authorities have requested EU firefighting aircraft in a bid to stop the blaze from spreading. It is believed forests, farmland and homes have been damaged across the country.
