Netanyahu vows to occupy Gaza as U.S. touts ‘all or nothing' hostage plan

Washington Post15 hours ago
Negotiations over a Gaza ceasefire appear to have reached an end — or at least a point of extreme brinkmanship — as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu indicated he plans to expand military operations to occupy the entire Gaza Strip.
In a statement released by his office, Netanyahu said he would convene his security cabinet this week to 'direct the [Israel Defense Forces] how to achieve the three war objectives we have set … defeating the enemy, releasing our hostages and ensuring that Gaza will never again threaten Israel.'

Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. President Donald Trump responded to reports that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has decided that Israel Defense Forces (IDF) should push to fully occupy the besieged Gaza Strip, including operating in areas where hostages are being held. The president was asked, "Would you support Israel reoccupying all of Gaza as has been suggested by some Israeli officials?" Trump responded, "Well, I don't know what the suggestion is. I know we are there now trying to get people fed. As you know $60 million was given by the U.S. to supply food for the people of Gaza that are obviously not doing too well with the food. "I know Israel is going to help us with that as far as distribution and also money. We also have the Arab states are also going to help us with the money and possibly distribution. So, that's what I'm focused on." He continued, "I really cannot say. That will pretty much be up to Israel." Reporter: Would you support Israel reoccupying all of Gaza? Trump: I really cannot say. Wednesday Briefing: Netanyahu's Next Steps in Gaza

Netanyahu is weighing what to do next in Gaza Benjamin Netanyahu, Israel's prime minister, discussed the path forward in the war in Gaza during a meeting yesterday with the military's chief of staff, Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir. The general presented 'the options for continuing the military campaign in Gaza,' the prime minister's office said, without specifying what they were. Netanyahu's office also told some Israeli reporters that the prime minister might expand military operations across all of the Gaza Strip. Three officials briefed on the matter cautioned that no decision had been made about the way forward. Israel, facing growing international condemnation over starvation in Gaza, is now allowing some private businesses to deliver goods to the enclave and is trying to refocus attention on the plight of hostages held by Hamas. At a meeting of the U.N. Security Council in New York, diplomats denounced Hamas but also called for Israel to address the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
