A R5,000 reward has been offered for any information that could lead to the arrest and conviction of individuals involved in the brutal killing of an adult Chacma baboon, which was allegedly butchered for human consumption in Ocean View.
Disturbing footage of the incident has surfaced on social media, showing the horrific slaughter of the protected species.
The video, which began circulating on Monday, was brought to the attention of both the Animal Welfare Society of South Africa (AWS SA) and the Cape of Good Hope SPCA, sparking urgent investigations by both animal welfare organisations.
'This horrific act is not only inhumane but also illegal,' said AWS SA spokesperson Alan Perrins. 'Chacma baboons are a vulnerable and protected species in South Africa. These intelligent, sentient beings are already under immense pressure from habitat loss, urban encroachment, and human-wildlife conflict. Now, they face yet another threat: barbaric killings for bushmeat.'
Perrins confirmed that AWS SA had immediately alerted CapeNature and its counterparts at the SPCA, with early indications pointing to members of the Ocean View community.
'We are combining resources to ensure the swift identification and prosecution of those responsible. Killing or consuming protected wildlife is a criminal offence, and we will pursue this case with the full weight of the law.'
Cape of Good Hope SPCA spokesperson Belinda Abraham confirmed that wildlife inspectors visited Ocean View on Monday as part of a joint operation with the City of Cape Town's Law Enforcement and Safety and Security Investigation Unit (SSIU).
'Our team immediately jumped into action after receiving the footage,' Abraham said.
'We are working closely with the relevant authorities, and our investigation is ongoing. The video is graphic and distressing, and we are determined to ensure that those responsible are held accountable.'
The SPCA is offering a R5,000 reward for any information that leads to a successful conviction. Their 24/7 Inspectorate Control Room can be contacted at 021 700 4158 or via confidential WhatsApp at 021 700 4140.
AWS SA Senior Inspector Sivuyile Kilwa can also be reached at 021 692 2626, 082 601 1761, or via email at ([email protected])(mailto:[email protected]).
Animal rights advocacy group Baboon Matters added its voice to the call for justice, condemning the killing in the strongest terms.
'We were utterly appalled at the reprehensible killing of a baboon as detailed in the CGHSPCA post,' said Baboon Matters founder Jenni Trethowan.
'We call on residents who may have witnessed the awful event to please come forward with information – these killers must be prosecuted to the full extent of the law. Now is the time for the authorities to act cohesively and decisively.'
Authorities have urged the public not to share the video due to its graphic content, and instead to report it directly to enforcement officials as part of the ongoing investigation.
'Let us stand together and say NO to cruelty. NO to wildlife crimes. YES to justice,' said Perrins.

Brazen armed robbers hit traffic department, police seek community help
Armed robbers attacked security guards at the Mhala traffic department and broke into a safe, stealing an undisclosed amount of money. Image: File Police at Mhala in Mpumalanga are requesting community members' assistance with information that could lead to arrests of suspects who allegedly broke into the Mhala traffic department and got away with an undisclosed amount of cash. The incident took place on Wednesday, at around midnight. 'It is reported that three security officers were on duty at the said department patrolling the premises when they were attacked by six African males who were armed with firearms - pistols and a rifle,' said provincial police spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Jabu Ndubane. The intruders allegedly pointed the security officers with firearms and forced them into one of the offices. 'They forcefully opened two burglar doors of the main entrance of the offices and broke all the burglar doors, which led to a room where there was a safe. It is further reported that the suspects damaged the safe and took an undisclosed amount of cash before fleeing the scene,' said Ndubane. 'Police urge anyone with information on his whereabouts to contact Detective Sergeant Collen Nyalungu on 076 936 7222. Alternatively, members of the public can anonymously call the Crime Stop number at 08600 10111 or send information via MySAPSApp.' Police have pledged that all received information will be treated as confidential, and callers may opt to remain anonymous. In September 2022, IOL reported that armed assailants attacked police officers at Grootvlei police station in Mpumalanga and forcefully took three 9mm pistols, one R5 rifle and one shotgun, as well as about 180 bullets. At the time, Mpumalanga police spokesperson, Brigadier Selvy Mohlala said the assailants took one pistol from a police officer, and the other firearms were seized from the safe of the police station. 'According to the report, two suspects arrived at the police station on Friday evening, 02 September 2022 around 6pm, claiming to be from Soshanguve under the pretence of reporting a domestic violence incident,' said Mohlala. 'They played victims as if they needed help from the two members who were working at the community service centre (CSC) regarding a female who was a 'victim' of domestic violence. The CSC's safety door was locked at that point and they initially left and only to return later around 10pm where they complained that their concern was being disregarded by the members.' During this second visit, the group insisted that the door should be opened for them. 'The members [police officers] opened the door to obtain more information. As soon as they let them in, two suspects drew firearms and disarmed the two police officials,' said Mohlala. [email protected] IOL News

Bail denied in Wynberg Court murder case, alleged mastermind admits being at scene
Bail was denied for two of the accused on Friday, and the murder case was postponed to September. (L-R) Shireen Matthews, Brian Booysen, Wanay Farao and Vuyisani Sergio Zengethwa appear at Wynberg Magistrate's Court in Cape Town on 9 May 2025. Picture: Gallo Images/Misha Jordaan Two women, including the alleged mastermind, linked to the fatal shooting at the Wynberg Magistrate's Court in Cape Town, Western Cape, will remain behind bars after being denied bail. Five accused – Shireen Matthews, Abubaker Adams, Wanay Farao, Brian Booysen, and Vuyisani Zengethwa – appeared in court on Thursday for the outcome of two bail applications. The suspects were arrested in connection with the murder of taxi operator Dingalomoya Chintso, who was shot and killed inside the courthouse on 8 April. According to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), the incident was a revenge killing. Bail judgment in Wynberg court murder case During Thursday's proceedings, the magistrate handed down judgment on the bail applications of Matthews and Farao. The court heard that Matthews discovered she had been linked to the case after her e-hailing service accounts were blocked two days following the incident. The state alleged that she used an e-hailing service on the day of the shooting. In her affidavit, Matthews stated she is self-employed, selling clothing and earning R5 000 a month to support her child and mother. 'She is currently in great pain and requires an operation to alleviate the discomfort,' the magistrate said. Matthews argued that she does not have a valid passport, as it expired in 2011. She also told the court that her incarceration at Pollsmoor Prison has placed her under severe emotional distress. 'She further averred that she is likely to suffer prejudice if she is not released on bail, as it will cause stress to her and her family,' the presiding officer remarked. The alleged mastermind added that she risks losing her business and that the investigation might take an extended period. Shireen Matthews appears at Wynberg Magistrate's Court in Cape Town on 9 May 2025. Picture: Gallo Images/Misha Jordaan Matthews admitted to having two previous convictions for theft. She denied involvement in the shooting but confirmed her presence at the court on the day of the fatal shooting. 'She attached a copy of the bail receipt which is attached to her affidavit. According to her, this bail receipt is proof that she was at court. 'This bail receipt is stamped, as a friend's case was withdrawn on that day, because while waiting to have the bail receipt endorsed so that the money could be paid out, she heard the shots and ran out. '[Matthews said] a person who she assumed to be a police officer ran towards her with a gun and told her to get down. She submits that she has no knowledge of the murder.' Flight risk Farao, in her affidavit, admitted being in a relationship with Booysen and said she moved in with him seven months ago. She told the court that she financially supports her mother, who suffers from schizophrenia. The 22-year-old said she earns R8 000 per month through modelling as well as dancing and suffers from chronic asthma, which she claimed was worsened by being held in an overcrowded cell. She conceded to being in the same e-hailing vehicle that dropped off Matthews at the court but denied involvement in any premeditated killing. The court also highlighted that Matthews and Farao had knowledge of the state's witnesses. 'They both know where the state witnesses reside.' The magistrate concluded that neither applicant presented exceptional circumstances justifying their release on bail. 'As a result, the bail applications of both first and second applicant are denied.' The case was postponed to 19 September for further investigation. Wanay Farao appears at Wynberg Magistrate's Court in Cape Town on 9 May 2025. Picture: Gallo Images/Misha Jordaan Wynberg court The authorities allege Matthews orchestrated the murder by recruiting members of the Junky Funky Kids (JFK) gang. Adams and Zengethwa are suspected to be the shooters. It is also alleged that Farao smuggled the firearm into the courthouse, while Booysen was assigned to dispose of the weapon afterward. NPA Western Cape spokesperson Eric Ntabazalila did not rule out further arrests. Previous reports indicated that ongoing tensions between local taxi operators and the JFK gang in Vrygrond.
