Rs 40-crore proposal mooted to desilt Bengaluru's Madiwala Lake

New Indian Express20 hours ago

BENGALURU: To tackle flooding in the BTM Layout area during monsoon, the BBMP lake wing has plans to remove silt from the Madiwala Lake.
Officials from the lake wing said that a Rs 40-crore proposal to remove silt has been sent to BBMP Chief Commissioner Maheshwar Rao for approval.
'If silt is removed from the 250-acre lake, its water holding capacity will increase. This will help avoid floods in future,' an official said.
The lake has not been desilted for the last 20 years. Once desilting work is done, areas downstream of the lake will not get flooded even if it rains heavily. A sluice gate will be installed 250 metres away from the lake to control the flow of water, he said.
The Palike is now developing pathways and parks, adding gazebos at a cost of Rs 15 crore. Removal of silt and hyacinth will add to Madiwala Lake's beauty and improve its ecosystem. 'We will start work as soon as the Rs 40-crore proposal is cleared,' an engineer said.
Expressing concern over silt and sewage entering the lake whenever it rains heavily, Anthony Raj, a fisherman, said about 116 families are dependent on the water body. Whenever it rains, sewage enters the lake, killing aquatic life. 'We cleared five coracle loads of dead fish from the lake after the heavy rain on May 19. This was because sewage entered the water inlet,' Raj said.
Palike officials, however, allege that the pipelines of BWSSB leak and manholes overflow at many places. Thus, sewage enters the open drains and flows into the lake.

Tired of too many ads? go ad free now As per initial reports, the helicopter took off from the Pathankot Air Force Station. The exact cause of the incident is still under investigation, though sources did not rule out the possibility of a scheduled emergency drill or training exercise. On June 6, another Apache helicopter had made an emergency landing in a field near Saharanpur in Uttar Pradesh after its pilots received a technical snag warning on their flying panel in the cockpit. Last year in April, an Apache was badly damaged when it made a hard landing near Khardung La in Ladakh during an operational sortie. IAF inducted 22 of the Boeing-manufactured Apache helicopters in 2019-2020 under the Rs 13,952 crore deal inked with the US in Sept 2015.

Dehu Nagar Panchayat must pay Rs14.36 crore fine for sewage discharge into Indrayani river, pollution regulator tells NGT

1 2 3 Pune: Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) has submitted an affidavit to National Green Tribunal (NGT) stating that Dehu Nagar Panchayat must pay Rs14.36 crore in environmental damage compensation (EDC) for illegally discharging untreated sewage into Indrayani river between April 1, 2020, and Nov 30, 2024. The NGT bench in Pune had earlier directed MPCB to calculate the EDC to be levied on Dehu Nagar Panchayat for contaminating river water, which resulted in repeated fish kills. This followed the tribunal's principal bench in New Delhi taking suo motu cognisance of a TOI report titled, "Hundreds of fish found dead in Indrayani river at Dehu," published on March 15 this year. The pollution regulator provided a breakdown of the EDC in its affidavit filed on May 28, which includes cost of bioremediation and setting up of sewage treatment plants (STPs) at Kapur and Ghat Nullahs. The board, in an affidavit filed at the tribunal on May 28, stated that the EDC is to be levied to prevent discharge of pollutants into Indrayani river, causing harm to the environment. The board calculated that the panchayat will pay Rs 2.38 crore for bioremediation activities at Ghat Nullah and Rs 2.79 crore for bioremediation at Kapur Nullah. Additionally, the panchayat will also pay Rs 2.38 crore for setting up STP at Ghat Nullah and Rs 2.79 crore for setting up the STP at Kapur Nullah since the panchayat failed to commence the STP in 2020. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Trade Bitcoin & Ethereum – No Wallet Needed! The board sent a notice to Dehu Nagar Panchayat on April 25, informing it about the EDC it had calculated. The bench directed that notices be issued to Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB), Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), Central Institute of Fisheries Education (CIFE) at Andheri in Mumbai, and the Pune district collector and sought their responses. The matter was then heard by the western bench on Oct 14, 2024. Dehu Nagar Panchayat's STP was not found functional, which led to pollution of nallahs and discharge of effluent, resulting in fish as big as 45 kg and up to 4 feet in height being found dead. MPCB stated that officials from the board and from Dehu Nagar Panchayat visited the site on March 14, 2024 and observed that a fish kill occurred at Indrayani river, near Kapur Nalla and at Ghat area on a large scale, as the water was contaminated with sewage found during sample testing. Previously, a fish kill incident occurred at the same location in June 2023. The final amount to be levied is to be decided in the next hearing to be held at the tribunal.
