Excise force strengthened with 157 new recruits, including 28 women
In a significant expansion of the Excise department, 157 new officers officially joined the force after completing their training at the Excise Academy. Minister for Local Self-Governments, Parliamentary Affairs, and Excise M.B. Rajesh took the salute at the passing-out parade held at the Thrissur Excise Academy grounds on Saturday and addressed the newly inducted officers.
This batch marks a historic milestone for the Excise Academy with the highest number of excise inspectors completing training in a single session. Among the 84 newly appointed excise inspectors, 14 are women—a record number. Additionally, 14 women civil excise officers were also part of the graduating cohort, bringing the total number of women officers in this batch to 28. Apart from them, 59 male civil excise officers have also completed the training and took part in the passing out parade.
'The Excise force is stepping forward at a time when it is facing immense challenges,' said Mr. Rajesh in his address. 'This new team reflects the strength and readiness of the Kerala Excise to meet those challenges head-on and perform their duties with responsibility and efficiency,' he said.
Lauds ADGP
He also lauded Excise Commissioner ADGP Mahipal Yadav for his decisive leadership during a critical phase for the department. 'His ability to steer the force effectively during testing times deserves commendation,' the Minister added.
Highlighting the department's ongoing war against narcotics, the Minister stressed the invaluable role played by the Excise department in collaboration with the police and society at large. 'The trust the public has placed in the Excise department has grown remarkably. People are now willing to come forward with information, confident that they will be protected and that action will be swift,' he added.
Awards presented
Awards were presented to those who excelled in various fields of training. The ceremony was attended by top officials, including Mr. Yadav and Excise Academy Director K. Pradeep Kumar, along with public representatives and senior officers from other departments.
The newly inducted officers are highly qualified, with impressive academic backgrounds. The batch includes 64 graduates, 29 postgraduates, 44 Btech degree holders, one BEd graduate, four Mtech graduates, four diploma holders, one MCA graduate, and one BDS graduate—demonstrating the high educational calibre of the latest additions to the force.

Students raise serious concerns over errors in NEET-UG papers
NEW DELHI: NEET-UG 2025, held on May 4, was conducted securely, thanks to enhanced security measures put in place by ministry of education, in coordination with state authorities. However, students and parents/guardians have raised serious concerns over errors in the question paper and delays in redressal of grievances, urging National Testing Agency (NTA) to respond quickly. The results are expected later this month. NEET-UG remains the gateway for over 20 lakh students aspiring to get into MBBS, BDS, and other UG medical courses. In Sikar and Gujarat, candidates received faulty booklets with jumbled page numbers. For example, students who received Paper Code 47 in Sikar found that pages of the question paper were not in order. In Gujarat, particularly in Jamnagar, candidates using Gujarati-medium Paper Code 48 faced the same issue. Due to incorrect sequence of pages in question paper - like question 7 being followed by question 15 - some candidates said they darkened the circle for the wrong question. Others said valuable time was lost trying to figure out the correct corresponding circles on the answer sheet. Following the exam, guardians submitted formal complaints to Gujarat govt and NTA, attaching scanned copies of the faulty booklets as proof. "Students even raised the issue during the test but were told to solve the faulty paper," a parent wrote. A state official confirmed the receipt of such complaints. NTA has declined to comment on the Sikar case, stating the matter is sub judice. Examinees and coaching experts also flagged certain questions as being beyond the medical syllabus. One example doing the rounds is question 38 of Code 47, which involved solving a calculus-based derivative - a topic more suited to engineering entrance tests like JEE (M). An NTA official said: "All questions were from the prescribed syllabus. The answer keys have been published and objections invited from candidates. These will be reviewed by a committee of subject experts". However, this does not resolve the concern about misprinted or non-sequential pages, which is a layout issue rather than a content-related one.

Proposed protest over 12 demands in Erode withdrawn following Minister's promise
The proposed protest by members of various social welfare organisations over 12 key demands was withdrawn after Minister for Housing, Prohibition, and Excise S. Muthusamy promised action in Perundurai on Tuesday. Led by R.S. Mugilan, coordinator of the Tamil Nadu Environment Protection Movement, the members had planned a continuous sit-in at the Perundurai Taluk Office from Tuesday, ahead of Chief Minister M.K. Stalin's visit on Wednesday. They alleged that despite submitting thousands of petitions with evidence of public property misappropriation worth crores in Perundurai Taluk, no action was taken. Their demands included action against former DMK Chennimalai Union Treasurer and officials from the Revenue Department, Sub-Registrar's office, and banks for alleged land fraud in Gandhi Nagar, Chennimalai, and against those involved in forging documents related to land allotted for the resettlement of 250 Sri Lankan Tamils in Attavanai Pidariyur. They sought withdrawal of a false case against farmers and environmentalists protesting SIPCOT pollution, and disciplinary action against Geology and Mining and Revenue officials for ignoring hundreds of mining-related complaints over five years. Protesters also demanded the arrest of AIADMK Union Secretary for alleged illegal mining using explosives on government land in Ekkattampalayam and Sillankattuvalasu, and criminal proceedings against four others involved in illegal quarrying. They called for action against the BDO, Police Inspector, and RTO for allowing heavy mineral transport that damaged roads, violating a Supreme Court ruling, and cancellation of illegal mining permits issued without mandatory public hearings near residential areas. The protesters had vowed to stage a sit-in until action was taken, but withdrew after Tuesday's meeting with the Minister and his assurance of follow-up.

Officials raided a location in West Marredpally where the accused Runeet and Aditya were found selling 13 grams of OG Kush.
