Conway's first test century in over 2 years boosts New Zealand's lead over Zimbabwe
Conway moved to a flawless 140 not out and Henry Nicholls was unbeaten on 41 at lunch on Day 2 with New Zealand cruising along to 306-2 for an overall lead of 181 runs.
Zimbabwe tried six bowlers in the session but only Vincent Masekesa (1-45) got success when the leg-spinner dismissed nightwatcher Jacob Duffy for 36.
Resuming on 174-1 with a 49-run lead, New Zealand had another productive session of 132-1 as Conway led the charge with his fifth test century.
He showed plenty of aggression against the fast bowlers and smashed Tanaka Chivanga through point boundary off the first ball of the day.
Conway then reached his century off 143 balls when he drove Blessing Muzarabani through mid-off for his 13th boundary of the innings, raising both arms to celebrate his much-awaited hundred in the longest format.
Conway's last test hundred came against Pakistan at Karachi in Jan. 2023. Since then the left-hander had played 16 test matches without a century.
Zimbabwe resorted to its spinners in the latter half of the first session in order to keep the fast bowlers fresh for the second new ball but only Masekesa could bring the home team success.
Masekesa struck off his second ball but not before debutant Duffy had frustrated Zimbabwe by raising a 73-run stand with Conway. Brian Bennett held onto a spectacular catch to his right at short mid-wicket as Duffy tried to pull the short delivery.
Zimbabwe lost the first test by nine wickets inside three days and its batting order once again crumbled for 125 on Day 1 against a new crop of New Zealand fast bowlers with Matt Henry and debutant Zakary Foulkes sharing nine wickets between them.
The two-match series is not part of the World Test Championship.

CAIRO (AP) — Mohamed Salah is questioning UEFA's 'farewell' to former Palestinian soccer player Suleiman Obeid who was reportedly shot and killed by Israeli forces while awaiting aid in Gaza. 'Can you tell us how he died, where, and why?' Salah asked on the social network X in response to a post from UEFA saying, 'Farewell to Suleiman al-Obeid, the 'Palestinian Pele.' A talent who gave hope to countless children, even in the darkest of times.'

Cyclists to wear GPS tracking devices as part of wider bid to improve rider safety
Riders will be testing out GPS tracking devices at the Tour of Romandie this week, ahead of the safety measure becoming mandatory at the world road champions later this year. World cycling's governing body is asking one rider from each team to wear a tracking device at the three-day women's event in Switzerland, beginning Friday. The same technology will then be used at the road world championships in Kigali, Rwanda, from Sept. 21-28, where every rider — from junior to elite level — will have to carry the device. 'The objective of this test is to refine the UCI's safety tracking software and establish protocols to provide real-time data to race control, medical teams and UCI Commissaires,' the UCI said in a statement. 'This system will strengthen the monitoring of rider safety during races and enable rapid response in case of incidents. This represents an important step forward in ensuring the safety of riders.' At last year's world championships, 18-year-old cyclist Muriel Furrer died after sustaining a head injury in a crash. She was competing in the junior women's event on rain-slicked roads when she crashed in a forest area south of Zurich. She reportedly lay alone for almost an hour and a half before she was discovered at the side of the road and airlifted by helicopter to the hospital. Two years ago, Gino Mäder suffered a fatal crash at the Tour de Suisse. The 26-year-old rider went off the road and crashed into a ravine during a descent and died from his injuries the next day. Last month, 19-year-old Italian rider Samuele Privitera died following a crash in the first stage of the Tour of Valle D'Aosta in northwest Italy. 'It's really sad to lose another young talent,' four-time Tour de France champion Tadej Pogačar said the day after the crash. 'It is one of the most dangerous sports in the world I think, and the risk that we are taking sometimes is too far.' ___ AP sports:

Salah questions UEFA's ‘farewell' to former Palestine soccer player Suleiman Obeid
CAIRO (AP) — Mohamed Salah is questioning UEFA's 'farewell' to former Palestinian soccer player Suleiman Obeid who was reportedly shot and killed by Israeli forces while awaiting aid in Gaza. 'Can you tell us how he died, where, and why?' Salah asked on the social network X in response to a post from UEFA saying, 'Farewell to Suleiman al-Obeid, the 'Palestinian Pele.' A talent who gave hope to countless children, even in the darkest of times.' Obeid, 41, was fatally shot by Israeli forces on Wednesday while he was waiting among crowds for aid near a distribution site in southern Gaza, the Palestine Football Association said. He leaves behind a wife and five children. The Associated Press could not independently verify the account. Obeid played 24 games for Palestine, scoring two goals, while he scored more than 100 over his career with local clubs, said the PFA, which described him as 'one of the brightest stars of Palestinian football.' The PFA published a letter attributed to Aleksander Čeferin in which the UEFA president said he was 'deeply saddened by the tragic death' of Obeid, who was 'more than just a footballer. He was proof that joy, skill, and pride can flourish despite suffering. His talent and dedication to the game gave the children of Gaza and beyond reason to believe in a brighter tomorrow. His passing is a great loss to the world of football and to everyone who understands the power of sport to inspire.' The PFA said Obeid's death brings to 662 the number of Palestinian athletes and sporting officials killed since the 22-month war started. Israel's air and ground campaign has killed tens of thousands of people in Gaza, displaced most of the population, destroyed vast areas and pushed the territory toward famine. Hamas-led militants triggered the war when they stormed into Israel on Oct. 7, 2023, killing around 1,200 people and abducting 251 people.
