Prayagraj: With cases of postpartum depression (PPD), a mood disorder that affects women after childbirth is rising among new moms. Parenting coaches and experts are now providing solutions such problems.
Parenting experts claim that after childbirth, child suddenly becomes the centre of attraction, and mothers feel ignored. In such situations, the new mothers experience persistent irritation, sadness, anxiety, and exhaustion, which can significantly interfere with a new mother's ability to care for herself and her baby. While 'baby blues' are common and temporary, PPD symptoms are more intense and prolonged, requiring professional treatment.
Parenting expert, Dr Ankita Raj, told TOI, "After delivery, a woman experiences three types of changes, including biological, environmental (when the child gets all the attention and parents feel ignored), and role transition (the process of moving from one social role to another)."
She adds, "In many cases, mothers feel ignored and suffer from persistent irritation, sadness, anxiety, and exhaustion. When such situations arise, the new mothers should take care of themselves and enjoy the moments they used to enjoy earlier in their lives, like positive emotions, mindfulness, and joy, reconnect with their friends."

She added, "Mothers should not feel pressurised or ignore themselves, and they should consult doctors or health experts, share their problems, and follow their advices."
Ankita, who has written 14 books on parenting, relationships, and personality development, says that depression can be effectively managed and treated through a combination of approaches tailored to an individual's needs.
This typically includes consulting a healthcare professional for guidance, which may result in medication if appropriate, as well as counselling or therapy to support changes in everyday behaviour and thinking patterns.
Additionally, lifestyle modifications, social support, and other strategies can play an important role in recovery and ongoing well-being.
Ankita said, "It will be better for mothers to talk to a health expert who can help them process their feelings and address underlying issues." Besides, connecting with other women who have experienced PPD can provide valuable support and understanding. Similarly, prioritising sleep, healthy eating, and regular exercise can also be beneficial.
Ankita, meanwhile, said, "Mothers should also focus on their balanced diet and must ensure a better sleep pattern for their wards." She advised parents to keep their wards away from phones and TV sets for their better development.

Ahmedabad: The incident at Seventh Day Adventist Higher Secondary School has once again put the spotlight on the issue of aggression and impulsive behaviour among children and teens, said experts. While not all cases result in an act of assault, the number of children and teens brought for counselling has increased in the past few years, they added. Dr Punita Grover, a psychiatrist in Ahmedabad working closely with children and teens, says the recent incident underlines the issue of emotional control and anger management. "We see several cases of anger among children, and such cases come to a medical setting only after a certain level of aggravation. Such cases have increased in the past few years due to multiple factors ranging from exposure to social media to emotional and physical changes experienced due to hormonal changes in the teenage years," she said. Dr Ajay Chauhan, superintendent of the Govt Hospital for Mental Health, said that the number of children and teens brought daily for counselling is around 15. "The number has increased in the past few years. The issue often lies in low level or lack of self-control and understanding of repercussions. Sometimes they lack emotional maturity, and thus regular interaction by parents, teachers, and mentor figures can help," he said. "Children today are exposed to imagery of bravado and violence, and minors are often consumed by it. Compared to a decade ago, children today also experience isolation. The issue of verbal and physical violence is multi-faceted and cannot be explained in simplistic terms. Several schools today have counsellors who are experts in addressing child and teenage issues, which is a welcome step," he said. Experts say there are several signs of emotional angst, ranging from preferring isolation, lack of social interaction, loss of appetite, getting triggered by relatively smaller issues, increased screen time, and overall disinterest in studies or other activities. Nine current and former employees have reportedly alleged that Blahnik's behaviour, which they described as manipulative and inappropriate, led more than 10 workers (which is nearly 10% of his team) to take extended medical or mental health leaves since 2022. The employees of the Cupertino-based tech giant also noted that when confronted, Apple protected Blahnik. The company reportedly settled a sexual harassment complaint and is currently fighting a lawsuit from an employee, Mandana Mofidi, who alleges that he bullied her. Despite the internal investigation, which Apple officials said found no evidence of wrongdoing, Blahnik has remained in his position as Vice President for Fitness Technologies. She said the experience was isolating and damaging to her mental health, eventually forcing her onto medical leave. Despite HR assurances, she claimed retaliation persisted, her transfer request was denied, and she resigned. A trial for this lawsuit is scheduled for 2027.
