'Lions step up when the heat is on'

Yahoo10-04-2025

Tuesday's magnificent win at Sheffield United, gives Millwall an unlikely, outsider's shot at the play-offs.
Okay, that late, late goal at Coventry last night certainly sprinkled a spoonful of reality over our morning cornflakes, but we are at our best always as the underdog.
Five points back with five games to play? Can we do it?
With our injury crisis, it will certainly be a massive achievement if we do.
But increasingly Alex Neil is pulling huge performances out of this squad.
The improvement in players like Billy Mitchell, Joe Bryan and Josh Coburn up front, combined with much more tactical nous than we've seen in recent years at The Den, gives us a puncher's chance, to borrow a boxing analogy.
So onto Middlesbrough at home this Saturday.
We'll need the gods of football to smile on us and keep doing so, but, as we've seen this season, this Millwall side can achieve some big results when the heat is on.
Come on you Lions!

Saville chooses Hatters over Championship offers

Luton will sign experienced Championship midfielder George Saville when his Millwall contract expires at the end of June. The Northern Ireland international, who turned 32 last week, has spent the past four seasons playing for the Lions in the second tier, appearing in 45 of their 46 Championship games last season as they narrowly missed the play-offs. Advertisement Hatters boss Matt Bloomfield told the club website: "We're really pleased to sign George, not just because of the experience and quality he'll bring, but because he's really enthused about the challenge that lies ahead. "He's chosen us over some Championship offers which shows his belief in our club, and that's the type of character we're after. "We're hoping George can help us with his leadership and ability to knit the game together in the middle of the pitch. He's going to be an important component of the squad." Saville said: "It's been a tough couple of years for the club but this is now a chance to correct that. Speaking with the manager, and what he wants to do, there's a chance to build something, create a good atmosphere and have a good season. Advertisement "I had offers in the Championship but since the first conversation with the manager it was clear-cut, it fits what I want and it's an opportunity to achieve something." After coming through the ranks at Chelsea, Saville made well over 200 appearances for Millwall across four spells at The Den, the first two on loan, and also had time with Brentford, Wolves and Middlesbrough, making more than 100 Boro appearances before returning to Millwall in 2021. He has also won more than 50 caps for his country since making his debut in 2017, and teed up the only goal as Northern Ireland beat Iceland in a friendly on Tuesday night. Saville's arrival comes after the Hatters confirmed the return of veteran defender Kal Naismith on Tuesday.

Blades sign young winger Ukaki on three-year deal

Blades boss Chris Wilder says new signing Ehije Ukaki was identified by the club's data driven strategy [Getty Images] Sheffield United have signed Nigerian youngster Ehije Ukaki from Bulgarian club Botev Plovdiv on a three-year contract for an undisclosed fee. Most commonly deployed as a winger, the 20-year-old follows in the footsteps of former team-mate Christian Nwachukwu in moving to Bramall Lane. Advertisement Last season, Ukaki scored seven times in 37 appearances across all competitions for the Bulgarian top-flight outfit. He notably netted the winning goal in the Plovdiv derby against rivals Lokomotiv in December. "Ehije is a player who has been identified through our data driven strategy and is someone we're looking forward to developing," Blades boss Chris Wilder told the club website. "He's an emerging talent, still only 20, who has enjoyed some experience of European football early in his career, so there's a base to work from."

Yuki Ohashi's target for his second season at Blackburn Rovers

Despite a promising first season in English football, Yuki Ohashi believes he has more to offer at Ewood Park. The 28-year-old's goal at Sheffield United on the final day saw the forward reach double figures for the campaign. Advertisement Ohashi hit the ground running following his switch from Sanfrecce Hiroshima last summer, with goals in his first three appearances for Rovers. He also bagged a brace against Bristol City but his momentum was halted by injury, having to wait until Boxing Day for his next goal against Sunderland. Ohashi - who had already been playing in the J League for several months before heading to Lancashire - had another spell on the sidelines after the turn of the year but netted against Cardiff following his return. The attacker scored three more goals in his last six games of the season to finish as Rovers' top-scorer, overtaking Andi Weimann whose campaign had been cut short by a knee injury. Advertisement READ MORE: David Raya's big Blackburn Rovers decision and why he never looked back Reflecting on his first term at Ewood Park, Ohashi told ESPN: 'I think it's not good enough for last season because for three months, a long time, I couldn't score. 'It's important to keep doing and keep scoring all season. I have to score for the team and I have to work for the team.' Ohashi had been hoping to make another appearance for Japan against Indonesia but was an unused substitute as they cruised to a 6-0 victory. The forward made his first start for the national team against Australia last week, getting 70 minutes under his belt. His first senior call-up came last October following a positive start in the Championship. Japan had already qualified for the World Cup as Group C winners. Their next games are friendlies against Mexico and USA in September.
