'No Tsunami Threat To India': INCOIS After Magnitude 8.8 Earthquake Strikes Off Russia's Far East
The Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) confirmed there is no threat to India following the 8.8 magnitude earthquake off Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula.
As one of the strongest earthquakes struck Russia's Far East early Wednesday, the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) said there was no threat to India from the massive 8.8 magnitude tremors.
The earthquake caused a tsunami in the northern Pacific region and prompted warnings for Alaska, Hawaii and other coasts south toward New Zealand.
Meanwhile, in an X post, the INCOIS noted that an earthquake of magnitude 8.7 (before the intensity was revised to 8.8) was detected off the East Coast of Kamchatka.
'No tsunami threat to India and the Indian Ocean in connection with this earthquake," it added.
Earlier today, the Consulate General of India in San Francisco said that it was monitoring the potential tsunami threat following the 8.8 magnitude earthquake off Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula.
The advisory warned Indian nationals in coastal areas to abide by the directions issued during a tsunami threat.
In a post on X, the Consulate mentioned, 'The Consulate General of India in San Francisco is monitoring the potential tsunami threat following the recent 8.7 magnitude earthquake off Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula."
'Indian nationals in California, other US West Coast states, and Hawaii are advised to take the following steps: Follow Local Alerts: Carefully monitor alerts from US authorities, including local emergency management and the US Tsunami Warning Centres. Move to higher ground if a Tsunami Alert is issued. Avoid Coastal Areas. Prepare for Emergency & Keep devices charged," it added.
The Consulate also issued a helpline number +1-415-483-6629 for those affected.
Meanwhile, an aftershock of the earthquake measuring 6.3 struck the Kuril Islands at a shallow depth of 10km.
The Philippines Institute of Volcanology and Seismology stated that Pacific coastal areas in the country are expected to experience tsunami waves less than one metre high, Al Jazeera reported.
'The first tsunami waves are expected to arrive between 01:20 PM to 02:40 PM" on Wednesday (0620 GMT Thursday to 0740 GMT Thursday). People are advised to stay away from the beach and not go to the coast, in the provinces affected by the advisory," as per the report.

Earthquake of 4.3 magnitude hits parts of Assam
Last Updated: Guwahati, Aug 18 (PTI) An earthquake of 4.3 magnitude hit Assam's Nagaon on Monday, making it the seventh quake in the state this month and the third in the district, an official said. There was no immediate report of any loss of life or damage to property, he said. According to the National Center for Seismology, the latest tremor of 4.3 magnitude on the Richter scale was recorded at 12.09 pm at a depth of 35 kms. The quake was felt in Nagaon and adjoining areas, the official said. This is the third quake epicentred in Nagaon this month, with a 3.8-magnitude tremor recorded on August 7 and a 2.8-magnitude quake the next day.
