'No Tsunami Threat To India': INCOIS After Magnitude 8.8 Earthquake Strikes Off Russia's Far East
The Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) confirmed there is no threat to India following the 8.8 magnitude earthquake off Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula.
As one of the strongest earthquakes struck Russia's Far East early Wednesday, the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) said there was no threat to India from the massive 8.8 magnitude tremors.
The earthquake caused a tsunami in the northern Pacific region and prompted warnings for Alaska, Hawaii and other coasts south toward New Zealand.
Meanwhile, in an X post, the INCOIS noted that an earthquake of magnitude 8.7 (before the intensity was revised to 8.8) was detected off the East Coast of Kamchatka.
'No tsunami threat to India and the Indian Ocean in connection with this earthquake," it added.
Earlier today, the Consulate General of India in San Francisco said that it was monitoring the potential tsunami threat following the 8.8 magnitude earthquake off Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula.
The advisory warned Indian nationals in coastal areas to abide by the directions issued during a tsunami threat.
In a post on X, the Consulate mentioned, 'The Consulate General of India in San Francisco is monitoring the potential tsunami threat following the recent 8.7 magnitude earthquake off Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula."
'Indian nationals in California, other US West Coast states, and Hawaii are advised to take the following steps: Follow Local Alerts: Carefully monitor alerts from US authorities, including local emergency management and the US Tsunami Warning Centres. Move to higher ground if a Tsunami Alert is issued. Avoid Coastal Areas. Prepare for Emergency & Keep devices charged," it added.
The Consulate also issued a helpline number +1-415-483-6629 for those affected.
Meanwhile, an aftershock of the earthquake measuring 6.3 struck the Kuril Islands at a shallow depth of 10km.
The Philippines Institute of Volcanology and Seismology stated that Pacific coastal areas in the country are expected to experience tsunami waves less than one metre high, Al Jazeera reported.
'The first tsunami waves are expected to arrive between 01:20 PM to 02:40 PM" on Wednesday (0620 GMT Thursday to 0740 GMT Thursday). People are advised to stay away from the beach and not go to the coast, in the provinces affected by the advisory," as per the report.

Floods, sea-level rise among top effects of global warming forcing Indians out of their homes, finds survey
With the monsoon raging on across various parts of India, be it along the hills of Uttarakhand, Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, or the west coast, severe weather is increasingly affecting a larger share of the population this season. A joint survey conducted earlier this year by the Yale Program on Climate Change Communication and CVoter saw 89 per cent of the adult population confirming having experienced some effects of global warming. Ninety-six per cent of respondents believed that global warming was occurring in reality, with 58 per cent of the participants blaming anthropogenic activities for driving global warming. Floods, droughts, extreme heat, and sea-level rise were among the top causes for families to consider relocation from their homes, the survey covering 2,164 adults found. A majority of the participants favoured that the Indian government should launch programs to train people for jobs in the renewable energy sector, support women and indigenous communities towards environmental protection, fund efforts to preserve forest land, and adopt policies to reduce water waste, especially in the new and upcoming building construction. Even though there are multiple mechanisms to alert and warn people ahead of most kinds of extreme weather events, 36 per cent of respondents noted not receiving any warnings.

Spain Deploys 500 More Troops To Contain 20 Major Wildfires Amid Extreme Heat
Last Updated: Spain deployed 500 more soldiers to combat 20 major wildfires, which continue to threaten homes in Galicia. At least 500 more soldiers were deployed to battle 20 major wildfires in Spain, which have torn through parched woodland during a prolonged spell of scorching weather, and have killed two, including a firefighter. The move to add more troops came as authorities struggled to contain forest blazes, especially in the northwestern Galicia region, and awaited the arrival of promised aircraft reinforcements from other European countries. Firefighters are tackling 12 major wildfires in Galicia, all of them near the city of Ourense, the head of the Galician regional government, Alfonso Rueda, told a press conference with Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez. 'Homes are still under threat, so we have lockdowns in place and are carrying out evacuations," the Associated Press quoted Rueda as saying. Galicia has been battling the spreading flames for more than a week. According to a Spanish national weather agency, temperatures in Spain could reach 45 degrees Celsius (113 Fahrenheit) in some areas. On Saturday, the maximum temperature was 44.7°C (112.46 F) in the southern city of Cordoba, it said. Europe has been warming twice as fast as the global average since the 1980s, according to the EU's Copernicus Climate Change Service. AP quoted scientists as saying that climate change is exacerbating the frequency and intensity of heat and dryness in parts of Europe, making the region more vulnerable to wildfires. Spain was expecting the arrival of two Dutch water-dumping planes that were to join aircraft from France and Italy already helping Spanish authorities under a European cooperation agreement. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
