Super Swachh League: Indore strengthens claim for top spot

Time of India5 days ago
Indore: Indore, which has been country's cleanest city for seven times in a row, now has Vijayawada as competitor in the 'Super Swachh League' along with Surat and Navi Mumbai in the above 10 lakh population category.
The addition was made shortly before President Droupadi Murmu is expected to honour the cities that demonstrated exceptional performance in cleanliness at a ceremony at Vigyan Bhawan on Thursday.
At the time of introducing the elite 'Super Swachh League' as part of Swachh Survekshan 2024, there were 12 cities competing in different population categories based on their securing a position in the top three ranks in at least two years in the last three years (2021-2023) surveys.
Relaxing some norms, 11 cities have been added to the elite league, including Vijayawada, which secured its best rank so far, third in 2021, official sources said.
All eyes, meanwhile, are on Indore. Indore Municipal Corporation (IMC) senior officials, who reached Delhi and participated in the rehearsal of the award distribution ceremony, are confident of receiving the prestigious award for the eighth time in a row.

"Indore's performance is exceptional, and we have been chosen to mentor another city to become like us," Mayor Pushyamitra Bhargava said in a video message from Israel.
"Israel has expressed interest in understanding India's cleanliness model and Indore's waste management. We have tried to learn a lot from their innovations, and soon there will be a sister city partnership between a city in India and Israel," he said.
The mayor requested Indoreans to honour and welcome the sanitation workers in their streets and neighbourhoods on Friday, a day after the award is announced.
Indore's strong claim for the top position is bolstered by several key initiatives undertaken by the IMC as part of the 2024 Swachh Survekshan Toolkit. This year, IMC established a new plant for processing green waste, while its plants for cloth waste and glass waste processing are underway.
IMC has also transformed some wards, zones, Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs), and even slums into 'zero waste' areas and is making efforts to get this tag for Kamla Nehru Prani Sangrahalaya (zoo) and Choithram Sabzi Mandi (wholesale vegetable market).
"This year, we did route rationalisation of the existing 575 door-to-door garbage collection vehicles by introducing 61 new routes. Besides, 100 electric-run D2D have been introduced as a step towards environmental conservation," IMC additional commissioner Abhilash Mishra said.
He added that Indore's robust system for road cleaning, waste collection, and waste disposal remains its core strength, unmatched by many other cities. The city's residents also play a crucial role, demonstrating high awareness and refraining from littering. While Surat significantly improved its door-to-door waste collection last year, achieving similar scores to Indore, Indore's comprehensive and consistently implemented system provides a strong foundation for its continued lead.
NGOs engaged with IMC have been carrying out massive campaigns throughout the year for clean air drives, rainwater harvesting systems, segregation of waste in six categories, zero waste events, and other activities to increase public participation to help maintain cleanliness.

Land acquisition prep begins for Patna-Purnia expressway

Patna: Revenue and land reforms department has started preparations for land acquisition across six districts — Vaishali , Samastipur, Darbhanga, Saharsa, Madhepura and Purnia — for the Patna-Purnia Greenfield Expressway project after receiving necessary clearances. Landowners will be compensated at market rates to ensure smooth acquisition and avoid potential disputes. Revenue and land reforms department's additional chief secretary Deepak Kumar Singh has written to all six district magistrates (DMs), instructing them to proceed with preliminary notifications after obtaining approval from the Central Valuation Committee. The directive came following a high-level meeting chaired by chief secretary Amrit Lal Meena recently, according to the officials of the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI). An NHAI official said Singh, in his letter to the DMs, told them to conduct a revised valuation of land based on the prevailing market price in the area, as per Section 26 (3) of the Land Acquisition Act, 2013, before initiating the process. "In this context, prohibition, excise and registration department has been granted the authority for special revision of MVR (minimum value registered) under Sub-rule 7 of the Bihar Stamp (Amendment) Rules, 2013, in light of the notification," said the official. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like അപൂർവ്വയിനം റോസാ വിത്തുകൾ: വേഗത്തിലുള്ള ഡെലിവറി Rare Climbing Rose Seeds Learn More Undo He added the 90m-wide greenfield expressway will be built with an estimated cost of Rs 18,042 crore till Chandbhatti village on Purnia-Kishanganj NH-27. The Patna-Purnia expressway will also intersect with Amas-Darbhanga road in Vaishali and connect with Patna Ring Road at Dighwara. "A total of 21 big and 140 small bridges, 11 ROBs, 21 interchanges and 322 underpasses will be built under the project. At the request of the state govt, spurs will be constructed to connect the cities of Samastipur, Saharsa and Madhepura to this project. The designated speed limit on this route will be 120km per hour. The state govt has appointed a competent authority for land acquisition," the official said. The project will also provide connectivity to Bihta Airport through a bridge between Dighwara and Sherpur, and eventually link to Darbhanga and Purnia airports. Once completed, the expressway will reduce travel time between Patna and Purnia by half from at least seven hours to three-four hours.

Difficult to project FY26 disinvestment mop-up at the moment: MoS for finance

The government on Monday said it is 'difficult' to anticipate the precise amount of its disinvestment proceeds this fiscal, as the process hinges on a number of factors, such as administrative feasibility, market conditions, economic outlook and investor interest. In a written reply in the Lok Sabha, minister of state for finance Pankaj Chaudhary said the FY26 budget estimate of Rs 47,000 crore under miscellaneous capital receipts indicates total mop-up from the government's management of equity investments and public assets through various mechanisms, and not just disinvestment.
