Tripura government gives jobs to 18 next of kin of victims murdered in political violence

The Hindu4 hours ago

The Tripura Government has started the process of distributing job offers to families whose members were killed in incidents of political violence before the incumbent alliance government came to power in 2018. Jobs were handed to 18 next of kin of the victims, which an official on Sunday (June 22, 2025) described as the first phase of such recruitment.
'A committee was constituted to provide government jobs to persons whose family members were victims of political murders. So far, the panel has received 39 applications, and out of these, 18 persons have been given jobs,' Tripura Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ratan Lal Nath said at a press conference.
'Several families couldn't even file FIRs with police, and many case records are missing,' he claimed.
The BJP-led government in December 2020 announced a scheme to provide jobs to next of kin of those killed in political violence over a period of 46 years with 2018 as the cutoff year. Thereafter, some jobs were disbursed to the affected families, but not blockwise like now.
A State Government official said 18 aspirants who were selected from the list recommended by a committee which was earlier set up to identify the victim families. 'The primary consideration for recruitment is based on the financial condition of the families, but all those lost kin would also be considered in the next phases,' the official stated.
The apparent policy of the State Government is to support only non-left families who fell prey to violence during previous CPI(M)-led governments. The victims, according to the official assessment, had been connected with the Congress party, as it was the main Opposition party in the state before 2018.
CPI(M), now in opposition, alleged that the policy of providing government jobs only to non-left families is 'inhumane', as scores of left supporters were killed in political violence. A party leader pointed to targeted killings of left leaders, workers and supporters during the 'repressive' five-year rule of the Congress-TUJS alliance government from 1988 to 1993.

Show the power of Hindu vote: Tamil Nadu BJP ally at Murugan meet

Madurai/Chennai: Hindu Munnani, a right-wing outfit close to BJP, Sunday called upon people to demonstrate the strength of the Hindu vote bank in the assembly elections in Tamil Nadu due in April next year. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now At the Lord Murugan Devotees Conference organised by it, Hindu Munnani passed a resolution for 'Hindu unity' and protection of Hindu rights and temples. Another resolution at the conference, which was attended by Andhra Pradesh deputy CM Pawan Kalyan and BJP office-bearers of Tamil Nadu, said the DMK govt should "stop treating temples as revenue sources and use funds to benefit devotees". Pawan Kalyan hit out at 'secularists' and atheists for targeting Hinduism while 'remaining silent' about other religions even as several parties including DMK, Congress, NTK and MDMK attacked BJP, saying it was using the conference to gain political mileage through religion. "Secularism has become a convenient word for a lot of people. Secularism means there should not be any discrimination in the name of any religion, except Hinduism, Hindu gods and Hindu culture. The so-called secularists do not have the guts to speak about the religion which came from Arabia," Pawan Kalyan said, adding that for atheists, "it has become a habit to denigrate our gods. This has to change. If this does not change, it would be difficult to sustain Hindu dharma". Speaking in Tamil, Pawan Kalyan called Pasumpon Muthuramalinga Thevar, an icon of Thevars, an incarnation of Lord Murugan who was "world's first revolutionary leader". The Thevar community is an influential vote bank in south Tamil Nadu. Former BJP state chief K Annamalai said there should not be any religious conversion from Hinduism, adding those who have converted should return to Hinduism. Though BJP's ally AIADMK has chosen not to speak about the conference, four former ministers from the party - R B Udhayakumar, Sellur K Raju, Rajendhira Balaji and Kadambur Raju - participated in the event. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Union minister L Murugan and senior BJP members H Raja, Tamilisai Soundararajan and Vanathi Srinivasan were also present. Attacking BJP and Hindu Munnani, TN Hindu religious and charitable endowments minister P K Sekarbabu said Lord Murugan will never offer his blessings to 'wrong people'. "Lord Murugan knows which event is political and which is spiritual. He can differentiate between right and wrong. So, he will never side with wrong people,'' he said. NTK chief Seeman said BJP was trying to appropriate Lord Murugan after they failed to reap political dividends using Lord Ram and Lord Ganesh in TN. "Why are they trying to appropriate Murugan suddenly, when all they spoke about for years was Ram in north India, Ganesh in TN and Ayyappa in Kerala?"

BJP leader clarifies saffron flag remark, says it's his personal opinion

PALAKKAD: A day after sparking controversy by suggesting that the saffron flag should replace the tricolour as India's national flag, BJP leader and former national council member N Sivarajan has clarified that his statement was a personal opinion and that the final decision lies with the Central government. Speaking to TNIE, Sivarajan said, 'The saffron flag has a rich history spanning centuries. It is not merely the flag of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). It symbolises India's culture, heritage and spiritual legacy. From Lord Krishna to Swami Vivekananda and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, the saffron flag has long represented Indian identity.' He further noted that requests to make saffron the national flag have been submitted to the Prime Minister's Office multiple times in the past. 'It is now up to the Union government to make an appropriate decision. I believe crores of Indians share the same sentiment,' said the BJP councillor from the Palakkad municipality. On Sunday, the veteran RSS functionary made the remarks during a BJP protest in Palakkad against the LDF and UDF for disrespecting Bharat Mata. Sivarajan's comments drew widespread criticism from political parties. Amid the controversy, Sivarajan reiterated his demand that political parties should be barred from using flags that closely resemble the national tricolour. 'The Indian National Congress, NCP, Tamil Maanila Congress, and several other parties use flags that look like the national flag. This blurs the distinct identity of our national symbol. They should be asked to adopt clearly distinguishable designs,' he said. His remarks come against the backdrop of a row in Kerala over the use of the image of Bharat Mata astride a lion holding a saffron flag -- an image widely associated with the RSS -- for official events at the Raj Bhavan. The portrayal has triggered sharp protests and confrontations between BJP and CPM workers on the streets, further deepening the political divide in the state. As the debate intensifies, political observers view Sivarajan's remarks as part of a larger narrative pushing for ideological symbolism in national identity.
