Scarborough: Police operation targets predators on nights out
A police operation targeting "predatory behaviour" in a seaside town at night has led to a reduction in crime, officers and publicans have said.North Yorkshire Police said its specialist team of officers for Project Vigilance had been patrolling Scarborough's town centre since December 2023 during peak times for partygoers.Supt Rachel Wood said the officers deployed, both in uniform and plain clothes, were trained to spot "potential victims" but also people displaying "predatory behaviour" in a bid to intervene and prevent sexual violence.Supt Wood said the Scarborough operation had led to 23 arrests and 68 "interventions" since it began.
She added: "We've had a number of positive safeguarding referrals that have gone in and we've seen a reduction in crime and anti-social behaviour since we've been running it."People should feel reassured that these patrols are taking place."
Police presence working
Ryan Mancrief, of Scarborough pub The Waterhouse, said the police presence in his venue had helped deter anti-social behaviour. He said his venue also worked with officers as part of the Ask for Angela scheme, which encourages patrons to approach bar staff and use the codeword "Angela" to indicate they are in potential danger. "We get the Street Angels or the police involved and we make sure that that vulnerable person is protected," Mr Mancrief added. The force also holds Project Vigilance patrols in York's city centre, mirroring what has become a national operation first launched in 2019.Officers deployed also help people find a safe way home, find their friends if they get separated or refer them to partner services, such as Night Angels or the Yorkshire Ambulance service, the force added.Supt Wood said it was also important for bystanders to "trust their instincts" and report behaviour that "doesn't seem right"."However insignificant you think something may be, please report it, because your actions could potentially save lives," she said.

And just a day later, human remains were discovered on June 6 by police after a major three week search for a body. As investigations continue into Pheobe's tragic death, the shocking state of her home in Gin Gin has been uncovered. Australian news outlet 7News managed to get access to the property and revealed the squalor Pheobe was enduring in the weeks before her passing. Before entering, the landlord can be heard in the video announcing: "I can't prepare you enough for this." In almost every room the floor was impossible to see due to the mounds of rubbish. Footage shows mountains of half empty soda bottles, unopened packages and full black bin liners in each room. The furniture was all out of place across the house with the sofas falling apart and the beds stained yellow. Even dog poo appeared to be on the floors of the old Queenslander-style home. Due to the horror conditions and poor cleaning, a major issue with the property was the smell. He also revealed the home was officially leased out by Bromley six months ago but she had been given a notice to leave after a recent inspection. Pheobe, from Gin Gin north of Brisbane, hadn't been seen or heard from since Thursday, May 15. Police first arrested Wood as he was the last person to see the teen as he reportedly took her to the airport. Cops believe during the drive to the airport, Wood, his girlfriend Bromley, and Pheobe all argued over stopping on the trip. Pheobe wanted to do her makeup in the car as she was on her way to Perth to visit her "high-school sweetheart" boyfriend, Wood said. The teen got her way in the end as Wood said he pulled over less than a kilometre away from their destination. When they returned, Wood said Pheobe and her bag were gone. This was the last time Pheobe was seen as an intense search operation was launched. On May 26, cops made a harrowing revelation. They believed evidence of a potential murder had been moved to cover up what had happened. On this same day, a new number plate was discovered to have been suspiciously painted and taped over Bromley's Hyundai car which drove to the airport. On June 5, police officially charged the couple with murder and two counts of interfering with a corpse. Cops allege Wood, Bromley and Pheobe were all in the car when it arrived at Airport Drive near Bundaberg Airport. They believe that the trio never left the car. Detective Inspector Craig Mansfield said: "Our evidence will outline the fact that three people arrived near to the airport, and three people never exited that vehicle." The pair continue to say they had nothing to do with Pheobe's disappearance or death. Wood and Bromley will appear in court on August 11. The sleepy neighbourhood has a population of about 1,100 people. The teenager had been living in a derelict pad - which had a foul smell and was very noisy according to neighbours. She lived there with two housemates: James Wood, 34, and Tanika Bromley, 33. On the day she went missing, Pheobe was meant to board a flight to see her boyfriend in Western Australia. Her housemates drove her to Bundaberg airport, but police said CCTV there never even saw her enter the terminal and she never actually checked in. She was on her way to Perth to visit her "high-school sweetheart" boyfriend. Pheobe reportedly made a last minute call to him at 8:30am mere moments before she was set to get on the flight to Western Australia. A family member said: "She didn't check in for her flight to visit her boyfriend who she spoke to on the phone at 8.30am." According to the Daily Mail, Wood said the couple had an explosive argument in the car with Pheobe over whether she could do her makeup before arriving at the airport. He said they pulled over just under a kilometre from their destination. The next day, police updated the case and said they were treating Pheobe's disappearance as a suspicious. They also declared two crime scenes - one being the run-down home she was living at, and the other being the infamous Hyundai she was driven to the airport in. After inspecting the foul-smelling home, police found four dead dogs rotting inside. But it was later understood that these four pups died of natural causes. And on this same day, a new number plate was discovered to have been suspiciously painted and taped over the notorious Hyundai's original plate. The gruelling search effort in Good Night Scrub National Park then continued from May 27 for five more days. Disturbingly, the search appeared to lose hope as police said they would no longer be doing any more physical scans for Pheobe on Wednesday, June 4. They said they would restart any searches only when they had relevant information. Shocking footage released on Friday showed the moment police arrested Wood and escorted him out of an RV for the "homicide of Pheobe Bishop".
