Former NBA star Gilbert Arenas facing federal charges for illegal poker games
Arenas, 43, of Woodland Hills, Calif., is charged with one count of conspiracy to operate an illegal gambling business, one count of operating an illegal gambling business, and one count of making false statements to federal investigators.
He is scheduled to make his initial appearance and be arraigned on Wednesday afternoon in U.S. District Court in downtown Los Angeles. If convicted, he would face a statutory maximum sentence of five years in federal prison for each count.
Also charged on Wednesday in the indictment were Yevgeni "Giora" Gershman, 49, of Woodland Hills; Allan "Elica" Austria, 52, of West Hills,Calif.; and Evgenni "Eugne" Tourevski, 48, Yarin "YC" Cohen, 27 and Ievgen Krachun, 43, all of Tarzana, Calif.
Gershman is a suspected high-level organized crime figure from Israel, according to the news release from the U.S. attorney's office.
Arenas and the other defendants operated an illegal gambling business from September 2021 to July 2022, according to the indictment that was unsealed on Wednesday. Arenas rented out the Encino mansion for the co-conspirators to host the illegal "Pot Limit Omaha" poker games, among other illegal games, with a fee charged from each pot either as a percentage or a fixed amount per hand.
Gershman hired women who were paid in tips and served drinks, provided massages and offered companionship to the poker players -- with the women charged a percentage of their earnings by the business operators, per the indictment. Chefs, valets and armed security guards also were hired to staff the games.
Arenas was a three-time All-Star, and All-NBA second-team selection in 2006-07 and third team in 2004-05 and 2005-06.
He averaged 20.7 points, 5.3 assists, 3.9 rebounds and 1.6 steals in 552 regular-season games (455 starts) for the Golden State Warriors (2001-03), Washington Wizards (2003-10), Orlando Magic (2010-11) and Memphis Grizzlies (2012).
His NBA career was overshadowed by a locker-run incident in December 2009 in which he and Washington teammate Javaris Crittenden brought guns into the locker room two days after having a dispute on a flight during a card game. Arenas was suspended for the remainder of the 2009-10 season.
The Warriors selected Arenas in the second round (31st overall) of the 2001 NBA Draft out of Arizona.

Purdue basketball alum back in NBA coaching ranks with Dallas Mavericks
WEST LAFAYETTE ― Dru Anthrop said coaching in the NBA is as much about relationships as it is about X's and O's. One of those relationships the former Purdue basketball player developed during his coaching career was with Jason Kidd. Now, Anthrop will reunite with the hall of fame point guard as a member of his coaching staff with the Dallas Mavericks. Anthrop said after Saturday's Purdue basketball alumni game he'd recently signed with the Mavericks and is eager to work under Kidd's tutelage. "When you are around people like that, you can just absorb everything they've got; all the knowledge about the game, the ins and outs of personalities of locker rooms." Anthrop previously worked alongside Kidd for two seasons with the Los Angeles Lakers before Kidd departed for Dallas. As member's of Frank Vogel's coaching staff, they won the 2020 NBA Finals. Anthrop graduated from Lafayette Central Catholic in 2009, having scored 1,298 career points and stayed in his hometown, joining Purdue as a walk-on. In Dallas, Anthrop will reunite with Vogel, who he's been tied to throughout his NBA coaching career. Vogel reportedly will be Kidd's lead assistant this season. Anthrop also gets to work with players Max Christie, Anthony Davis and D'Angelo Russell, all whom he coached with the Lakers. Dallas roster also includes Kyrie Irving and 2025 No. 1 overall pick Cooper Flagg.

Adding five-time All-Star could solve Celtics' frontcourt problems
The Boston Celtics have a major hole that a former All-Star could fix. Over the past couple of months, the Celtics have been one of the most active teams in the league. After winning an NBA title in 2024, much of that championship core is now elsewhere. Beginning with the trades of Jrue Holiday and Kristaps Porzingis, Brad Stevens steadily began to dismantle part of the championship roster to help Boston's tough financial situation. Looking to get under the second apron and be in a better spot for long-term flexibility, the Celtics have also lost Luke Kornet and appear likely to lose Al Horford as well. Although the team has made some minimal moves to address their departures, the team is especially lacking inside. With Jayson Tatum expected to miss all of next season, Boston's starting frontcourt currently appears to be Georges Niang and Neemias Queta. While both are solid players, they would likely project as backups on most contending squads. To help with that issue, Boston could add a bit more depth inside by signing Kevin Love. According to a recent report from Marc Stein, the big man is trying to find his way out of Utah, likely through a buyout. If Love can secure that buyout, Boston could be among the teams near the top of his list. Although Love's top priorities for his next team might be a big market and title contention, the Celtics can offer him some legitimate playing time. As a great sports market and potentially only another year from contending again, Love going to Boston could be a move more suited as a long-term solution to cap off the potential Hall of Famer's career.
