If AI Can Work Smarter, Why Are We Still Working Ourselves Into the Ground?

The promise of artificial intelligence in the workplace has always sounded pretty good: automate the boring stuff, reduce busywork, free up humans to focus on strategy and creativity. But if that future is already here—and the tools to make it happen are increasingly accessible—why are so many employees still working longer hours than ever?
Despite headlines touting AI breakthroughs and efficiency gains, burnout remains one of the defining features of modern work culture. A Gallup report released earlier this year found that nearly three in five employees report being emotionally detached at work, and 44 percent describe feeling burned out. The question is no longer whether AI can help—it clearly can. The question is: why aren't companies using it to actually make workers' lives better?
'AI has the capability to automate tedious, time-consuming tasks, yet employees are still being pushed to work excessive hours as if these tools don't exist,' says George Kailas, CEO of Prospero.ai. 'It frankly baffles me that leadership teams aren't seeking alternatives to overworking their employees.'
This isn't just about inefficiency; it's about workplace inertia. The tools are here. The problem is leadership reluctance to let go of outdated management styles rooted in presenteeism and productivity theater—where being seen working long hours is still rewarded, even when results lag.
A growing number of tools—from AI assistants that summarize meetings to platforms that automate scheduling, data entry, and document processing—are capable of handling the kinds of tasks that still take up hours of employees' time each week. AI is even being used in some sectors to triage customer service tickets, generate reports, and write basic code. But instead of using that newfound time to reduce workloads, most companies just pile on more tasks.
'Overwork isn't a necessity—it's a choice,' Kailas says. 'Employers clinging to outdated workflows while burnout skyrockets aren't just inefficient—they're negligent.'
Even policymakers are noticing the contradiction. Earlier this year, a bipartisan group of U.S. senators called on major corporations to outline how they're using AI to benefit—not burden—their workers. It's a clear sign that the debate is shifting: the conversation is no longer whether AI can be used in the workplace, but why it hasn't been used more equitably.
Part of the issue lies in how we define success. Western economic systems tend to equate productivity with value, leading to a kind of societal Stockholm syndrome where 'more work' is always the answer, no matter how inefficient or unhealthy it may be.
'There's a great book on AI called Heartificial Intelligence , and it argues that we need to move away from measuring the success of our society by production,' Kailas says. 'Because if we don't, robots will displace most everyone eventually—they'll win on production efficiency.'
Kailas points to newer frameworks like Gross National Happiness, a model used in countries like Bhutan, which measures societal progress not just by GDP but by collective well-being. It's a radical shift in thinking—but perhaps the only one that aligns with a future where machines outperform humans on most measurable tasks.
'If we do not rethink what a productive society looks like and integrate variables like the health and well-being of our people, the future is scary,' Kailas warns.
So what's stopping companies from unleashing AI to its full potential? Control. For all the talk about productivity, many organizations are still obsessed with visibility, micromanagement, and command structures that reward effort over outcome.
'The technology is here, the benefits are obvious, and yet companies are still clinging to outdated models that prioritize unnecessary overwork instead of smart, AI-driven efficiency,' Kailas says. 'At some point, we have to ask: is this about productivity—or control?'
It's a fair question. In theory, AI should be the great liberator of labor. In practice, it's being underutilized by systems more interested in maintaining hierarchy than unleashing human potential.
Some companies are rethinking the equation. Forward-thinking firms are using AI not just to cut costs, but to build more humane, balanced workplaces. They're applying AI to support real problem-solving, reduce administrative bloat, and, yes, let people log off earlier. These companies are quickly becoming magnets for talent—and more resilient in a changing economy.
But for the rest, time is running out. 'The companies that figure this out will build more productive, engaged, and future-proof teams. The ones that don't? They'll be left behind in a workplace revolution already in motion,' says Kailas.
The question isn't whether AI will change work—it's whether we'll let it change work for the better. Right now, the answer depends less on the tech—and more on leadership's willingness to finally let go of the grind.

Have you ever spent hours perfecting a slide deck, only for it to be unused or be over the top? There's a way you can bypass working long hours and just whip something up in the theme you want, fast: use artificial intelligence. AI tools can be your best coworker in a bid to impress without burning out -- saving you hours of obsessing about presentations so you can focus on delivery, not design. While Copilot in Microsoft PowerPoint is one choice, I also found a dedicated AI presentation maker. What is Prezi? Prezi AI was the tool I chose after a Google search for what to use to make a presentation. I liked that it sounded Aussie (we shorten the names of everything), and the pricing is accessible. It has a free basic version and various tiers that range from $19 to $39 per month. I went with the mid-range, because the lowest tier didn't come with infographic capabilities. It's $29 per month with a 14-day free trial. Prezi AI promises to create "your best presentation in minutes." Let's see about that. Getting set up with Prezi AI I signed up to Prezi AI Premium and put a reminder in my phone about the free trial end date. I was prompted to enter information about the presentation, so Prezi AI could suggest content and design ideas. You can also upload a PDF, which can be helpful for the AI or skip this step for now and choose a template. Screenshot by Amanda Smith/CNET For the sake of this example, I pulled out some initial brainstorming work I did for a creative campaign that I wanted to present to an agency client. I used this text box to tell Prezi AI what I was looking to achieve. First Prompt: "I want to professionally and creatively present my initial thinking on a campaign for Zayed National Museum in the UAE. I want to combine my notes with the strategist's notes so I can present my idea by telling a story and taking them on a journey. I prefer a minimalist, elegant design. Do you need me to upload the document?" I quickly found out that it's not really an AI chat tool, because it generated a mock design without answering my question. Screenshot by Amanda Smith/CNET Instead, I saved all the notes into a PDF and re-created the prompt. Prezi AI only uses text content, so don't upload graphics or charts. Refining and finalizing your AI slide deck I liked how it created a "storyboard" presentation, but some of the imagery was off. For example, it had photos of Steve Jobs and the Bucket List movie with Morgan Freeman -- likely because it features a trip to Egypt, although still very off-brand for a UAE campaign. An image of Steve Jobs was an odd pick for the AI tool. Screenshot by Amanda Smith/CNET I also added these two sentences to the original prompt: "Only use imagery from this website: Incorporate all of the text from the PDF and don't add more to it." Again, it was way off brand, mostly because AI has a hard time understanding cultural sensitivities and nuances. It also even included an image from Pixar movie The Incredibles. Screenshot by Amanda Smith/CNET I didn't love the output, as it had a hard time following simple instructions like "only include the copy from the PDF," so I picked the one I preferred the most and edited it -- plugging in critical copy it missed and removing images. How long does it take to make an AI presentation? It took me about 30 minutes to make all the tweaks it needed, and while that wasn't ideal, it still would've taken me much longer to put together an initial deck like this. I would've agonized over the design. It's certainly not perfect, but it's better than wasting precious time trying to do it from scratch. And the more you use AI programs, the more they learn about your style preferences, making the editing process easier each time. Just always make sure you check the words and images it produces. Utah earns Moody's highest credit rating again

That's the highest possible rating for a government entity, indicating the lowest risk for investors. Along with Utah, 13 other states hold that score with Moody's, Fitch and S&P Global, three big rating agencies. 'The Aaa issuer rating reflects Utah's robustly expanding economy, formidable budget reserves, minimal leverage, and exemplary fiscal governance,' the financial firm wrote in the announcement. In the meantime, the state has 'excellent budget flexibility' with low fixed costs from 'low leverage from bonded debt, pension liabilities and retiree healthcare.' However, the state also faces credit challenges, including climbing cost of living prices and diminishing housing affordability, which could slow down the state's 'in-migration' trends in the future. Additionally, catering to more Utahns living in the state means more spending, especially for public education. And, like in most Western states, Utah's issues with water supply and drought 'can disrupt the economy and drive capital spending,' analysts said. Gov. Spencer Cox celebrated the news, saying in a release that the rating would allow the state to save taxpayer dollars with low-borrowing costs to fund infrastructure and public services. 'These ratings reflect the fact that our hard work is paying off,' Cox said in a statement. 'Utah continues to be recognized as one of the best-managed states in the nation because of our commitment to fiscal responsibility and the incredible work of public servants who take that responsibility seriously every day.' The firm also highlighted that Utah's score will remain steady since its fiscal and debt management style could allow it to successfully navigate potential economic challenges, while its 'judicious' approach to expenses in sectors like education, transportation and health care will make for stronger financial stability. 'We don't take this kind of recognition for granted,' Cox said. 'The recent launch of GRIT and the BUILD Coordination Council reflects our commitment to keep improving by solving problems early and delivering real results for Utahns. A top credit rating is something to be proud of, but it is also a reminder to keep earning that trust every single day.' Moody's noted that Utah's rating could be downgraded if the state departs from its tradition of fiscal and liability management, or if the state reduces its reserves to less than 25% of own-source revenue due to economic downturn or other events.
