Europe on radar as AirAsia X to start KL-Istanbul direct service on Nov 14
The new route, operated four times weekly on an Airbus A330-300, will connect Kuala Lumpur International Airport to Istanbul Sabiha Gökçen International Airport.
Speaking at the launch, AAX CEO Benyamin Ismail said Istanbul had 'always been a dream destination for many of our guests' and was a natural next step following the airline's expansion into Central Asia.
'Hot on the heels of our recent growth into Central Asia, this long-awaited route takes us one step closer to delivering longer connectivity across continents. As the only city in the world built on two continents, Istanbul perfectly captures our vision to bridge Asia and beyond through affordable, medium-haul travel,' he added.
He said Turkiye is already one of Malaysians' favourite holiday destinations, with 22 weekly flights currently offered by other carriers.
'With us, it will be an added benefit because we will offer the cheapest fare,' he said, adding that the important thing is that they want to connect with people who have never flown before from Europe or Turkiye to Kuala Lumpur and onto their network of 130 destinations.
He also pointed to untapped potential in Indonesia and the Philippines.
Turkiye, ranked fourth in the world for most international visitors, is seen by AAX as a high-priority market.
The airline plans to start with four flights a week and, if demand is strong, increase to daily within six to 12 months.
'This is our first European destination in this new phase. For 2026, we are looking at London, Azerbaijan, Russia, all very exciting markets,' said Benyamin.
He acknowledged that the launch had been delayed due to Middle East airspace closures.
'We should have started earlier, but we held back. Now we see things are okay, so this is the best time,' he said.
AAX has ordered Airbus A330XLRs for future medium-haul routes of five to eight hours, targeting destinations in Central Asia, India, smaller Australian cities and Japan.
Turkey Ambassador to Malaysia Emir Salim Yüksel hailed the new route as a 'tangible step' in strengthening bilateral ties.
'We established diplomatic relations in 1964 and last year celebrated the 60th anniversary. This air link will not only boost tourism flows but also expand business links, foster industry collaboration and open new pathways for education, innovation and people-to-people engagement,' he said.
Nearly 93,000 Malaysians visited Türkiye last year, with the figure expected to surpass 100,000 in 2025.

Outbound travellers in Sabah warned of risky payment terms
Liaw KOTA KINABALU (Aug 13): The Sabah Tour and Travel Agents Association (Satta) has cautioned the public about outbound travel packages that require unusually early and large payments. Satta president Datuk Seri Winston Liaw said certain groups are offering tours that demand a deposit followed by full payment 45 days before departure. 'Normally, payment is collected from tour members 30 days or three weeks before departure, and the full sum is paid to the agent only once the members arrive in the destination country,' he said on Tuesday. According to Liaw, the groups claim the money must be sent to China or Korea 45 days in advance but do not disclose the identity of the operator. 'In 45 days, they can already collect 50 per cent of the payment, and later the remaining balance. This could easily total RM100 million. It's risky because the cash flow is entirely in their hands,' he said. Liaw warned that there have been cases where travellers paid in full but found no arrangements upon arrival, often leading to lengthy legal disputes. 'I'm not against their promotional methods, but the payment system. I don't want Malaysians to be cheated. They have been doing this in Sarawak and West Malaysia, and now they seem to be eyeing Sabah,' he added. While stopping short of calling it a scam, Liaw urged caution and suggested requiring bank guarantees from operators using this payment method as a safeguard. 'It would instil more trust if bank guarantees are issued to each travel agent. This is a very important matter,' he said.

Malaysia champions CHASE City for sustainable ASEAN urban growth

She described the framework as adaptable to diverse ASEAN urban realities while promoting integrated planning. 'This is not a collection of separate agendas, but an integrated philosophy that guides urban policy, design and governance, in a holistic way,' she said. Dr Zaliha spoke at the ASEAN Sustainable Urbanisation Forum held at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre. She highlighted the framework's alignment with ASEAN's urban priorities, fostering collaboration among governments, businesses, and communities. The Kota MADANI project in Putrajaya was cited as a successful application of CHASE principles. It integrates low-carbon solutions, AI-driven technologies, and green mobility for sustainable urban living. Malaysia's membership in the Davos Baukultur Alliance was also underscored as a milestone. The country is the first non-European member of this global coalition promoting cultural urban development. 'Cities are more than functional spaces. They are cultural and social ecosystems,' Dr Zaliha noted. She pointed to heritage conservation efforts like Warisan KL, which revitalises landmarks such as Bangunan Sultan Abdul Samad. These initiatives blend adaptive reuse with sustainable design to boost civic pride and tourism. Boeing's July aircraft deliveries tumble 20pct from June, trailing Airbus
Reuters SEATTLE: US planemaker Boeing said on Tuesday that it delivered 48 airplanes in July, down from 60 in June but five more than a year earlier. It was the most deliveries by the company in July since 2017, when it delivered 58 aircraft. Boeing continued to fall further behind European rival Airbus in deliveries this year. Airbus handed over 67 jets in July despite having a growing number of aircraft unable to be delivered because it lacks enough engines. That was down from 77 in July 2024, but it lifted Airbus' year-to-date tally to 373, compared with Boeing's 328. Airbus is also leading the US planemaker in single-aisle jet deliveries, with 286 A320neo family jets compared with Boeing's 243 737 MAX jets. About 66 per cent of all commercial jets are single-aisle planes. Boeing delivered 37 of its best-selling 737 MAX jets in July, 20 of which were for aircraft lessors and 17 for airlines. Boeing also handed over eight 787s, two 777 freighters and one 767 freighter. Airbus delivered five regional A220 jets, 54 of its cash-cow A320neo family, two A330s and six A350s. Aircraft deliveries are closely tracked by Wall Street because planemakers collect much of their payment when they hand over jets to customers. Boeing booked 31 gross orders in July, which included 30 for 737 MAX jets and one for a 787. The Republic of Iraq cancelled one 787 order, though it still has seven 787s on order. By the end of July, the aerospace giant had received 699 new orders this year, or 655 net orders after adjusting for cancellations and conversions. Its order backlog was 5,968 after adjusting for US accounting standards. Airbus has struggled with delayed deliveries from its largest engine supplier, CFM International, co-owned by GE Aerospace and Safran, but delays have spread to its RTX-owned rival Pratt & Whitney in the wake of a recent strike, the European planemaker said. Airbus still projects that it will deliver 820 jets by the end of the year, a seven per cent rise from last year. Boeing has not given guidance for annual deliveries. The US company is working to stabilise production after a mid-air panel blowout on a new 737 MAX in January 2024 exposed widespread production quality and safety problems.
