Gerard Butler Accidentally 'Insulted' This Award-Winning Director During Very Awkward Audition
Gerard Butler is opening up about one of his more ill-fated Hollywood auditions.
During a recent interview with HuffPost UK to promote the live-action remake of How To Train Your Dragon, the Scottish actor admitted he once inadvertently insulted an esteemed director while trying out for one of his films.
While he didn't disclose the name of the movie, he did reveal that the film in question was a remake, directed by Joe Wright.
Gerard recalled that, during the audition, 'I said, 'so why are you remaking it?' – and I didn't mean it to be cheeky, I was just curious!'.
'He gave me such an intelligent answer, and at the end, I said something like, 'is that it?',' he continued. 'And I mean it as in, 'is that the end of my audition?'. And he was like, 'yeah'. And I just got up and left and went, 'well that was the weirdest thing'.'
Gerard added: 'I think he was just insulted that I said, 'why are you even doing this?', when I had no right to be asking that question! I was just trying to make conversation!'
'I got up and left, so I still to this day don't know if I was expected to read or not,' he quipped. 'I'm wondering if there's still a chance of me getting this role. Who knows? I mean, it was about 12 years ago…'
Over the course of his career, Joe has helmed several remakes and adaptations of classic works, including 2005's Pride & Prejudice (earning him a Bafta for Most Promising Newcomer), 2012's Anna Karenina and 2015's Pan, a Peter Pan prequel starring Hugh Jackman as Blackbeard the pirate.
The British filmmaker went on to direct the war movie Darkest Hour, for which Gary Oldman earned an Academy Award for his portrayal of Winston Churchill, the Netflix thriller The Woman In The Window and the romantic musical drama Cyrano.

Lucasfilm chief Kathleen Kennedy previously teased the film, saying, 'Well, we're 15 years out from Rise of Skywalker, so we're post-war, post-First Order, and the Jedi are in disarray. And, there's a lot of discussion around, 'Who are the Jedi? What are they doing? What's the state of the galaxy?' And, [Rey]'s attempting to rebuild the Jedi Order, based on the books, based on what she promised Luke, so that's where we're going.' The next confirmed Star Wars title is The Mandalorian & Grogu coming May 22, 2026, followed a year later by Star Wars: Starfighter from Shawn Levy and starring Ryan Gosling. Regarding Hamill's joking comment about leaving his robes behind, he and the late Carrie Fisher appeared as force ghosts at the end of Rise of Skywalker, and he indeed was robed. And hardcore Star Wars fans will counter that in 1977's A New Hope, when Darth Vader killed Obi-Wan Kenobi, his robes were also left behind — but Alec Guinness still appeared in his robes when he showed up as a Force Ghost in The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. Dan Da Dan has beaten Marvel's Thunderbolts at the box office this week, and it could be a sign of anime's cinema domination in the rest of 2025

Much is made about what tops the box office but look a little further down the charts and you might just discover an unlikely changing of the guard – as new anime movie Dan Da Dan: Evil Eye gets one over on Thunderbolts, just 39 days after the Marvel movie's release. As flagged by Collider, the June 9 takings of Dan Da Dan: Evil Eye came in at $350,000, gifting it ninth place at the US domestic box office. Thunderbolts, meanwhile, is flagging in 10th, grossing $290,000. While it's easy to raise eyebrows at another Marvel feature stalling in cinemas, it's more exciting to see the potential anime has with audiences later this year – as is the case with Evil Eye, which bundled the first three episodes of Dan Da Dan season 2 together with the finale of the first season. Anime has always threatened to break into the mainstream (Demon Slayer: Mugen Train is 2020's highest-grossing movie, beating out the likes of Tenet), but this could be the year it truly gets a firm foothold in theaters. Later this year, the first part of Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle and the Chainsaw Man movie will be released in cinemas, each one offering the chance to put anime on the map in Hollywood. Beyond that, Haikyuu VS The Little Giant is spiking its way onto the big screen in the coming years. It's little wonder, then, that Disney CEO Bob Iger is eager to communicate a philosophy of quality over quantity in Marvel Studios' future. Speaking on a call with Wall Street analysts, Iger called Thunderbolts the "first and best example" of that new approach. "In our zeal to flood our streaming platform with more content, we turned to all of our creative engines, including Marvel, and had them produce a lot more. We've also learned over time that quantity does not necessarily beget quality. Frankly, we've all admitted to ourselves that we lost a little focus by making too much. By consolidating a bit and having Marvel focus much more on their films, we believe it will result in better quality," Iger said.
