US envoy discusses Syria's post-war future with Syrian and Jordanian foreign ministers
US special envoy Thomas Barrack has met the foreign ministers of Jordan and Syria, to discuss ways to support the process of rebuilding Syria after years of civil war. Jordan 's Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi and Syria's Foreign Minister Assad Al Shaibani attended the meeting in Amman on Tuesday, news agency Petra reported. The leaders spoke about various issues, particularly supporting Syria's postwar reconstruction and 'ensuring its security, stability, and sovereignty', the Jordanian Foreign Ministry said. Promoting the rights of all Syrians and consolidating the ceasefire in the Sweida province were other matters to be discussed, it added. Earlier Mr Safadi met Mr Al Shaibani and Mr Barrack separately, at the Jordanian Foreign Ministry's headquarters. Talks between the US, Syria and Jordan are mostly focused on enabling reconstruction efforts and securing foreign investment, but will also tackle other pressing issues, such as protecting minorities from attacks like the recent violence against the Druze community in Sweida. The meeting comes as Damascus seeks international investment to revive its economy, which has been devastated by nearly 14 years of conflict. The UN has estimated that Syria's postwar reconstruction will cost more than $400 billion. Amman has increasingly engaged with Damascus as part of regional efforts to stabilise the situation and encourage more investment, but the Syrian government is facing mounting pressure to address increasing security issues. Last month, Jordan held a meeting with its Syrian counterparts 'to address the consolidation of the ceasefire in the Sweida governorate in southern Syria' a statement from the ministry said. Last week, Damascus signed 12 major agreements valued at $14 billion, including a $4 billion deal with Qatar's UCC Holding to build a new airport and a $2 billion agreement with the UAE's National Investment Corporation to construct a subway in Damascus.

Iraq to build 20 new cities near Baghdad
Iraq is planning to build 20 new residential cities in and around the capital Baghdad to ease congestion in the city and tackle a festering housing supply shortage. The construction and housing ministry has launched studies for the allocation of sufficient land to accommodate the new satellite cities. 'The ministry has started preparing studies for the allocation and expansion of land needed to accommodate 20 new cities in the Baghdad province,' the ministry's spokesman Nabil Al-Saffar said in local press comments on Monday. He said the ministry is also pushing ahead with plans to build an administrative capital In Baghdad similar to Egypt's New Administrative Capital. Officials reported this year that the ministry has received bids from four Egyptian companies and other foreign developers to build the administrative capital. 'Al-Rafeel City,' with an area of 265 square kilometres, will accommodate more than 75,000 people and comprise houses, government offices as well as commercial, education, health and amusement facilities. Last year, Egypt's ORA Developers was awarded the main contract for a new mega residential city 'Ali Al-Wardi, located in the southeast of Baghdad. Ali Al-Wardi is one of about 10 contracts awarded over the past three years to construct new cities that could house more than two million people. The planning ministry said in a study in 2024 that Iraq, OPEC's second largest oil producer, needs to build at least three million houses for citizens in the next five years to shore up the supply gap. Oman: Olive sector grows to 20,000 trees, 83 tonnes in annual yield
MUSCAT: Across the mountains, particularly in Al Jabal Al Akhdhar and the Western Hajar range, olive trees thrive in a revitalised agricultural landscape that reflects the nation's ambitious vision for food security and diversified income. The journey began in the 1990s with the introduction of 10,000 saplings from various cultivars. Some varieties quickly adapted to local conditions, laying the groundwork for olive farming as a promising sector. Today, success is not only in cultivation but also in production. In 2022, Oman produced over 83 tonnes of olives and 10,000 litres of olive oil. Yet, demand far outstrips supply, with more than 24,000 tonnes of olives imported between 2020 and 2022 — underscoring the need to boost local output. Government bodies and institutions have supported farmers through free sapling distribution, training programmes and modern olive mills, increasing the number of trees to 20,000. Omani olive oil is now gaining regional and international recognition for its high quality and distinctive flavour. Sustainable growth, however, demands overcoming challenges — a mission championed by Prof Rashid bin Abdullah al Yahyai of the College of Agricultural and Marine Sciences. His project identifies optimal cultivation areas based on climate and water resources, introduces high-yielding varieties, and promotes best practices in pruning, irrigation and fertilisation. Innovation is also driving the sector forward. By-products such as olive leaves and pomace, often discarded, are being explored for transformation into value-added nutritional and functional products. Research aims to enhance processing efficiency and create sustainable economic solutions for operational hurdles. These efforts form a clear road map — not just towards self-sufficiency, but towards positioning Oman as a significant player in the regional olive market. In doing so, Oman enhances food security and bolsters its economy by fostering an innovative and sustainable agricultural sector.
