Smriti Irani on Bollywood's silence on Op Sindoor: Don't watch them if you're hurt

India Today6 days ago
When India launched its counter-terror operation under the codename Operation Sindoor, the nation rallied behind the armed forces. However, Bollywood faced criticism for its silence, with many questioning why prominent actors didn't speak up. Addressing the growing public anger, television actor and former Union Minister Smriti Irani remarked that the country stood firmly with its Army, regardless of whether celebrities voiced their support or not.advertisementReacting to growing commentary about the film industry's muted reaction to Operation Sindoor, Irani said the nation should not measure patriotism through celebrity statements.'If someone is not with the country, and their lack of support offends you, then don't watch them,' she said.
'Because, as an ordinary citizen, how can you express your anger (against their silence)? By tunning off. It is wrong to say that if an actor did not stand with the Army, nobody stood with the Army. The whole country was standing with its Army," she said.Irani emphasised that ordinary citizens have always risen to support the armed forces, regardless of whether celebrities have spoken out or not."The ordinary citizen, was there. The day, the ordinary citizen, will not be there, that day, I will be worried. So, till the time an ordinary citizen, and the parliament of the country is standing with the Army, you can question the silence of the actor. But I don't believe the country is sitting around waiting for an actor to say 'Bharat Mata Ki Jai.' The nation is well aware of these realities by now," she added. When India-Pakistan reached the brink of war, many politicians questioned the losses suffered by the Army and asked how many planes were downed by the neighbouring country. Many politicians have been demanding an answer from the government."Parliament session is underway; it will definitely be told there,' she replied.Irani warned against sensationalism in matters of national security, saying facts should prevail over headline-grabbing remarks.'As I said, it is very easy to give line-grabbing statements on the issue of national security. I cannot do it. I can speak very easily, but the right and responsibility of presenting facts in the Parliament is of the government—and the nation will run on facts.'She stressed the importance of following parliamentary decorum and history while dealing with sensitive national issues.'Our parliamentary decorum, the history in which he was lying, you will have to take a factual position,' Irani said, adding, 'And today the truth cannot be hidden from the geopolitics and social media and different aspects of media. So I think that the national government has the strength to place all the facts in front of the opposition and the country through the Parliament.'However, she also acknowledged that some facts related to national security may not be made public due to their sensitive nature.advertisement'We should also be aware that there are some internal security and geopolitical facts which will be known only to the leadership and will not be made public. Now I think there is a need to understand the mature reality,' she said.Smriti Irani, who held various significant roles within the Union Cabinet during her political journey, is making her comeback on the screen with the same show that made her a household name 25 years ago – Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi.- Ends

Parliament Monsoon session: Congress gagged Shashi Tharoor, Manish Tewari, suggests PM Modi

NEW DELHI: The absence of Shashi Tharoor and Manish Tewari from the list of speakers fielded by Congress for debate on Operation Sindoor took a different dimension Tuesday, with PM Modi suggesting the duo, who were part of all-party delegations sent abroad, have been "gagged" by their party leadership. In his reply to the debate in LS, the PM said members of all-party delegations sensitised the international community to Pakistan's use of terrorism as a weapon against India and the necessity for Operation Sindoor but "it seems some of them have been prevented from speaking". Suggesting Congress members were under pressure, Modi told them "not to cave to pressure from one family to give clean chit to Pakistan". This was widely seen as reference to Tharoor and Tewari who defied Congress to be part of govt's global outreach. The speculation about Congress leadership's annoyance being the reason for them being left on the bench despite their familiarity with international affairs, gathered force on Tuesday after Tewari posted on X, "Bharat ka rehne wala hun, Bharat ki baat sunata hun," and shared a report from a news portal on him and Tharoor not participating in the debate. Tewari told reporters on Parliament campus, "If you don't understand my silences, you will never understand my words." While Tharoor refused to comment on the issue telling reporters he was on "maun vrat", sources said the Thiruvananthapuram MP was approached by Congress at a late stage with the offer to speak, but he turned down the offer. BJP MP Anurag Thakur said Tharoor and Tewari were not being allowed to speak by 'Rahul-occupied Congress'.

'PM Modi surrendered to Pakistan, using military to protect image': Rahul Gandhi in Lok Sabha

NEW DELHI: Accusing of using the defence forces to "protect his image", leader of opposition in LS on Tuesday said govt "surrendered" before by telling it within moments of that it did not intend to escalate or attack military installations. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now He said Modi had "blood of people of Pahalgam" on his hands, and he sent the air force to "protect his image". Rahul asked the PM to realise "the nation is above your image" and not to "sacrifice the armed forces and national interests for your own petty political gains". Rahul said govt showed a lack of political will and did not give the forces "freedom of operation", and cited US President Donald Trump claiming 29 times that he forced a "ceasefire" between India and Pakistan. More than once, he challenged the PM to announce that Trump is a liar and did not force "ceasefire" and India did not lose any planes, egging Modi to say this if "you have even 50% courage of Indira Gandhi". Rahul said Modi govt avoided naming "China" in its remarks, but the reality is that India fought Pakistan fused with China militarily, reminding he was laughed at when he had warned about it earlier in LS. "Govt thought they were fighting Pakistan... but realised they were fighting China," he said, quoting Lt Gen Rahul Singh's recent revelations that Pakistan was getting live battlefield information from China. "If you had listened to me, you would not have lost five planes. " He said govt should not allow India to become a "battlefield for big powers". He cited the revelations of CDS Anil Chauhan and defence attache in Indonesia Captain Shiv Kumar, even as he urged the CDS to come out with a statement that the forces were hobbled by the political brass. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now "May be Rajnath does not understand what he revealed... that DGMO was told by govt to ask for ceasefire at 1.35am on the day of operation... surrender in 30 minutes," Rahul said. He said Rajnath's comparison of the 1971 war and Operation Sindoor was jarring because then PM Indira Gandhi had rebuffed US President Richard Nixon and the US seventh fleet, and finished the job. He was severe on EAM S Jaishankar, whose claim of "new normal" and of govt having deterred Pakistan was picked apart with the argument that Pahalgam mastermind and Pakistan army chief Feild Marshal Asim Munir was hosted by Trump in the White House for lunch, while the US Central Command head is presently having a discussion with Munir on how to fight terrorism.

Amit Shah comes to Lok Sabha armed with proof on Pahalgam attackers

NEW DELHI: The three Pakistani terrorists who gunned down 26 civilians, including 25 tourists, in J&K's Pahalgam in front of their horror-struck families, were cornered and killed on Monday in a joint operation by the Army, CRPF and police in Dachigam area on the outskirts of Srinagar, home minister Amit Shah disclosed in Lok Sabha on Tuesday. Participating in the debate on Operation Sindoor, Shah identified the three attackers killed in 'Operation Mahadev' as Suleman alias Faizal Jatt alias Anas alias Usama Markaz; Hamza Afghan; and Jibran, all Pakistanis and affiliated to the Lashker-e-Taiba (LeT). Suleman, a top-grade LeT commander and the mastermind of the April 22 Pahalgam attack, was also involved in the Oct 2024 attack at the Z-Morh construction site in Gagangir, in which six labourers and a local doctor were killed, he said. Both Hamza and Jibran were also 'A-grade' LeT terrorists. The three were identified by family members of two locals arrested on June 22 by NIA - Parvaiz and Bashir. The duo had provided food and shelter to them at their 'dhok (seasonal hut)' some 2km from Baisaran prior to the attack. A source said they were paid around Rs 3,000 by the terrorists. Shah had come to LS armed with conclusive evidence of direct involvement of the three terrorists in the Pahalgam attack as well as their Pakistani roots. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Seniors Born 1939-1969 Receive 11 Benefits This Month If They Ask Super Saving Online Undo The ballistic report, he said, matched the cartridges and barrel of the weapons recovered from the slain terrorists, with the spent casings secured from the attack site. Two of the three terrorists were carrying Pakistani voter IDs and the weapons - an M4 carbine and two AK-47s - and chocolates recovered from them further sealed the Pakistani link. The neutralisation of all three Pahalgam attackers marks the culmination of a massive manhunt, which started with Shah's instructions to the forces at a security meeting on April 23 to not allow them to escape to Pakistan. As many as 1,055 eyewitnesses and suspects were questioned by NIA and other agencies over 3,000 hours, and sketches of the terrorists were prepared. Shah said it was on May 22 that human intelligence on presence of the assailants in Dachigam area was received. Technical surveillance was mounted by the Army and Intelligence Bureau to capture 'Ultra' signals of communications between the terrorists and their handlers in Pakistan. "IB, Army and CRPF personnel traversed on foot in cold and high altitudes to receive the signals. On July 22, we got success through sensors, and the location of the terrorists was confirmed. An operation was launched by CRPF and J&K Police under the leadership of 4 Para, and the three terrorists were surrounded and killed," he said.
