McIntosh romps to world 400m freestyle gold, Ledecky third
The 18-year-old McIntosh romped home in 3min 56.26sec, nearly two seconds clear of China's Li Bingjie, who was followed by Ledecky in bronze.
It was the world record holder's first world title in the event as she pursues five individual golds in Singapore.
On the opening night of the meet, McIntosh and Ledecky, 28, renewed their rivalry from the Paris Olympics last summer.
They will also meet in the 800m freestyle, billed as the most eagerly anticipated race of the championships.
McIntosh took the lead early on and never looked back to demolish the rest of the field, pulling increasingly clear as the race progressed.
McIntosh came to Singapore in red-hot form.
She smashed the 400m freestyle world record at the Canadian trials in 3:54.18 in June.
The three-time Olympic gold medallist sliced more than a second off the previous world record of 3:55.38 set by Australian Ariarne Titmus at the 2023 world championships.
Olympic champion Titmus is not in Singapore because she is taking a season off before she dives back in to prepare for the 2028 Los Angeles Games.
McIntosh won gold in the 200m butterfly, 200m medley and 400m medley at the Paris Olympics. She took silver in the 400m free.

Frank Mill, 1990 World Cup winner with West Germany, dies at 67
FRANK Mill, a key member of West Germany's 1990 World Cup-winning team, has passed away at the age of 67. His former clubs Fortuna Duesseldorf and Rot-Weiss Essen confirmed the news on Tuesday. Mill, who also secured a bronze medal with West Germany at the 1988 Seoul Olympics and lifted the German Cup with Borussia Dortmund, succumbed to complications from a severe heart attack suffered in May. Though he earned 17 caps for West Germany, he did not feature in any matches during the 1990 World Cup in Italy. Rot-Weiss Essen, his hometown club, paid tribute to Mill, calling him 'a legend' and 'an ambassador for football across the country.' The General Motors-backed team have taken staff already from rival outfits, their European headquarters at Silverstone being close to other factories, and are also competing for sponsorship. Brown, whose team are dominating this year's championship after winning the 2024 constructors' title, saw no reason to fear a dilution of resources, however. "I think on employees they are definitely going to take a lot more than they give, which is fine," he said at last weekend's Hungarian Grand Prix. "My general view is if someone wants to go work for a rival team then shame on me. "For sponsors, I think they'll bring more new to the table than take." Brown expected Cadillac also to bring more competition eventually, although they faced a tough challenge as newcomers, and more fans to a series that now has three U.S. rounds and a growing audience in America. "Will we get a better U.S. TV deal, more American presence? I think their sponsors and Cadillac will spend money in the sport, the teams get a percentage of that so I see them as a value add to the sport," he added. "I'm not worried about maybe some of the short term-ness of they are going to take an employee here or there or poach a sponsor here or there. I think the contribution will be bigger than that." Cadillac secured approval of their bid in March, after a 764-day entry process and initial opposition from Formula One and the other 10 teams wary of a potential reduction in the share of revenues. The team are also backed by TWG Global, whose CEO Mark Walter has an estimated net worth of $12.5 billion, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index.
