Restored faith: On the Pollachi verdict

The Hindu14-05-2025
Justice, if not unduly delayed, restores public faith in due process and the criminal justice system. The recent verdict in the Pollachi sexual assault case, where a Coimbatore Mahila Court convicted all nine accused and sentenced them to life imprisonment for the remainder of their natural lives, is a significant step in this regard. More so, because the entire case originated from a single plea for help from a young victim, which helped expose the involvement of multiple tentacles of a body of criminals. In February 2019, a 19-year-old college student reported to the Pollachi East police that four men had sexually assaulted her in a car near Pollachi 12 days earlier. The ensuing investigation revealed this complaint to be just the tip of the iceberg. As in the Prajwal Revanna case in Karnataka, the seizure of digital devices unveiled the full scope of the atrocities. Since 2016, a group of young men had been systematically preying on vulnerable young women, from disadvantaged groups, filming the assaults, and using these videos for further exploitation. The sheer depravity uncovered shocked the State's collective conscience. Public outrage intensified with the exposure of the accused's political connections. One was identified as the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) Pollachi town students' wing secretary (later expelled), while another, involved in an assault on the survivor's brother, held a local secretary position in Amma Peravai, an AIADMK-affiliated youth organisation. Faced with mounting public pressure, the State government initially transferred the investigation to the Crime Branch-CID and subsequently to the Central Bureau of Investigation.
Mahila Court Judge R. Nandhini Devi also directed the State government to provide a total compensation of ₹85 lakh to the survivors. The judge concurred with the prosecution's argument that the perpetrators had exploited their financial resources, physical power, political influence, and the incriminating videos to silence the survivors and perpetrate repeated assaults. She emphasised that she was clear that the judgment should 'reflect the public abhorrence of the crime'. As elections approach, politicians must resist the temptation to politicise this judgment, which not only delivered satisfactory justice but also challenged the misuse of political and financial clout. To foster a genuine feeling of security, the government must now assure its citizens an environment free from exploitation.

Government body to send notice to CSDS for Maharashtra polls data error

The Indian Council of Social Science Research, a government body, on Tuesday said that it will issue a show-cause notice to the Centre for the Study of Developing Societies over an erroneous claim made by the research institute about the voter numbers in Maharashtra. The ICSSR, which reports to the Union education ministry, oversees research in social and human sciences. The CSDS, a research institute for social sciences and humanities, is a recipient of ICSSR funding. Sanjay Kumar, the co-director of the CSDS-affiliated Lokniti programme, had claimed on Sunday that two Assembly constituencies in Maharashtra – Ramtek and Deolali – had witnessed a significant drop in the number of voters between the 2024 Lok Sabha and Assembly elections. The general election took place in April and May 2024 and the state polls in November 2024. In a social media post, which was later removed, Kumar claimed that there had been a 38.4% drop in Ramtek and a 36.8% drop in Deolali. The post included specific figures, citing a decrease of around 1.7 lakh voters in each constituency. In Ramtek, Congress candidate Shyamkumar Barve won the Lok Sabha seat with more than 48% of the votes. Six months later, the Shiv Sena's Ashish Jaiswal won the Ramtek Assembly segment with more than 52%. In Deolali, a segment of the Nashik Lok Sabha constituency, the Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) won in the general election but finished third in the Assembly polls. On Tuesday, Kumar deleted the post, attributing the error to a data misreading by his team. He apologised, saying that he had 'no intention of dispersing any form of misinformation'. I sincerely apologize for the tweets posted regarding Maharashtra elections. Error occurred while comparing data of 2024 LS and 2024 AS. The data in row was misread by our Data team. The tweet has since been removed. I had no intention of dispersing any form of misinformation. — Sanjay Kumar (@sanjaycsds) August 19, 2025 The ICSSR accused CSDS of manipulating data with the intent to undermine the credibility of the Election Commission. It stated that an individual in a responsible position at CSDS had made public statements that were later retracted due to flawed data analysis. It alleged that CSDS had published media stories based on 'biased interpretations' of the special intensive revision of electoral rolls in Bihar. The council called the actions a serious breach of grant-in-aid rules. It has come to the notice of ICSSR that an individual holding responsible position at CSDS, an ICSSR-funded research institute, has made media statements that had to be retracted subsequently citing glitches in data analysis regarding elections in Maharashtra. Futher, the… — Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR) (@icssr) August 19, 2025 The controversy escalated into a political row amid allegations by Opposition parties about electoral fraud in the country. On Tuesday, Bharatiya Janata Party Spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia accused Congress leaders of using Kumar's erroneous data to spread misinformation about the electoral process. He said that Kumar's tweet remained online for 40 hours and was used as propaganda by Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Pawan Khera. 'They call themselves a survey agency but are puppets in the hands of leaders like Rahul Gandhi,' The Indian Express quoted Bhatia as saying. 'They [Congress] want an agency to publicise fake data. This is a factory, a machine of dishing out lies.' The BJP's publicity chief Amit Malviya criticised what he described as the Congress's brazen targeting of the Election Commission. Malviya urged Gandhi to immediately abandon his Voter Adhikar Yatra, a voter rights march, in Bihar, and 'tender an unconditional apology to the people of India for his callous and regressive politics'. However, the Congress defended its criticism of the Election Commission. 'That's just two seats,' party's publicity chief Khera told The Telegraph. 'We weren't depending on his data. Why should we comment?' The Congress and its allies have repeatedly alleged manipulation in the electoral processes. On August 7, Gandhi said that his party had spent six months examining the electoral rolls in Mahadevapura Assembly segment of the Bangalore Central Lok Sabha constituency and found discrepancies in more than one lakh names. The Opposition leader claimed that this was evidence of the poll panel having colluded with the Bharatiya Janata Party in 'destroying the election system'.

NSUI protests against NCERT's special module on partition

New Delhi: The Congress-affiliated National Students' Union of India (NSUI) protested at Delhi University's Faculty of Arts against what it termed as the RSS-BJP's hateful and distorted NCERT module. The Congress and other opposition leaders are accusing the ruling BJP of 'interfering' with the functioning of the institutions and 'distorting' the country's history after a special module, released by the NCERT to mark 'Partition Horrors Remembrance Day', held Jinnah, the Congress, and then Viceroy Lord Mountbatten responsible for India's Partition. Hitting back, the BJP said that the Congress is in pain because the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has brought a 'bitter truth' of India's Partition out for the students to study. According to an NSUI statement, many students joined the protest, raising slogans to safeguard the true legacy of India's freedom struggle. Addressing the gathering, NSUI National President Varun Choudhary said, 'The history of India will not be written with lies and hatred. When the nation was fighting for freedom, these people were standing with the British.' 'The same traitors of that time are today blaming Gandhi, Nehru, and Sardar Patel with falsehoods. We will not allow the innocent children of this country to be victims of RSS and BJP's distorted history,' he said. NSUI announced that this movement will not be confined to Delhi University alone and vowed to continue the struggle in every state and university across the country until the 'hateful and misleading NCERT module' is withdrawn. The students' body asserted that restoring truth and dignity in the portrayal of India's freedom struggle is non-negotiable, and pledged to intensify its agitation in the coming days.
