Vast Releases Haven-1 Space Station VR App for Apple Vision Pro, Meta Headsets, and SteamVR
Vast Lead Astronaut, and former Acting Chief Astronaut at NASA, Andrew Feustel, serves as the narrator of the simulation, and also advised on the app's development. With three missions to space and 197 days on the International Space Station, Feustel's input was essential to ensuring an accurate simulation of being onboard a space station.
In the opening, Feustel greets the user at Vast headquarters in Long Beach, California, where Haven-1 is currently being designed and manufactured. His voice then guides the user through the station's interior, inviting them to interact with life support systems and other critical components showcasing the functionality of the station.
Much like on a real mission aboard Haven-1, the app enables users to run experiments and partake in routine astronaut activities including accessing storage areas for food and crew equipment, and checking a digital crew interface that monitors the station's systems.
Users can also interact with the simulated Haven-1 Lab, the world's first microgravity research, development, and manufacturing platform on a commercial, crewed space station. In the Haven-1 Lab, the user can check on experiments and view payloads from inaugural lab partners Redwire and Yuri, both foremost experts in developing microgravity payloads.
Other features of Haven-1 VR include the 1.1 m domed window, which boasts an immersive, 180-degree view of Earth, and the revolutionary zero gravity sleep system, which provides optimal support and comfort to astronauts while they sleep. Feustel specifically provided guidance on the simulated experience of looking through the window and the 'overview effect', a documented phenomenon that Feustel and other astronauts have experienced when viewing the Earth from space.
Scheduled to launch no earlier than May 2026, Haven-1 represents a preliminary step toward Vast's vision of pioneering the future of long-term space habitation.

Meta's first Android-based AR glasses could be landing very soon at an irresistible price
C. Scott Brown / Android Authority TL;DR Meta's first augmented reality glasses are reportedly launching next month. These glasses, codenamed 'Hypernova,' will offer a barebones interface with basic support for notifications and Meta's AI. The glasses are reported to launch at just $800, to rake in far more orders than Apple's extravagantly priced Vision Pro. Apple took a leap of faith when it first showcased its $3,500 extended reality headset, the Vision Pro, in 2023. Despite the slow rollout and extensive marketing, the headset failed to take off, despite its bragworthy features. Time and again, experts have blamed its towering price for the lack of public interest, and that is a lesson for other companies, including Meta, which is also gearing to launch its AR glasses soon. According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, Meta is set to launch its first commercial pair of augmented reality (or AR) glasses very soon, for a much more attractive price than expected earlier. In the latest Power On newsletter (paywalled), Gurman revealed that the launch is set for September, while the glasses, codenamed 'Hypernova,' will be available for $800, a 20% reduction from the previously suggested $1,000 price tag. The reason behind the price cut is Meta's likely decision to lower its profit margin to increase demand. However, Gurman cautions that while $800 is the probable base price of the headset, any modifications in the form of prescription lenses or changes to the style could easily increase prices. Meta's Hypernova will only offer barebones functionality of smart glasses, Gurman notes. It will likely serve as the interim product ahead of Meta's actual release of the Orion, its full-fledged AR glasses. As previously shared by Gurman, Hypernova will feature a monocular display limited to a small section of the right lens. This section will display key information, such as notifications from the linked smartphone or cues from the built-in Meta AI app. This is done so the information does not obstruct the users' field of view and is only visible when they look down. While Hypernova is said to run a special version of Android and have a few apps pre-installed, it will lack any regular Android apps or support for an app store. The glasses will pair with a 'neural' wristband that uses electromyography (EMG) to identify hand gestures and other movements. Meta has previewed the same wristband with a prototype of its Orion AR headset, which is expected to be available in 2027. Meanwhile, the pair launching more recently is also said to feature touch-sensitive areas on the temples for controls besides the wristband. Lastly, Meta is reportedly already working on a second-generation Hypernova with binocular vision, but with a similar minimal interface. This is likely to be available sometime in 2027 and will be another key stepping stone to Meta's success with a pair of glasses with broader support for apps and immersive experience. Follow

Amazon To Issue Refunds As Appstore Closes On Android: What To Know
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Amazon will be shutting its Appstore for Android and its Coins program this week, the company has said. Appstore Apps "will not be guaranteed to operate on Android devices" as of Wednesday, August 20, according to the company's website. Amazon Coins will be refunded following closure, users are advised. Newsweek has contacted Amazon via email for further information. Why It Matters Users have been warned that apps could begin to malfunction, that they should transition to those available on the Google Play Store, and to delete any remaining apps on their device to avoid potential data vulnerabilities. Amazon's Appstore closure marks the end of a 14-year service which launched in 2011. What To Know Amazon originally announced that it would be shuttering the Android Appstore in February, and said this was part of an "ongoing effort to streamline and improve our services and programs." This comes after the discontinuation of the Appstore on Windows last year. The shutdown exclusively impacts Android mobile devices, and the Appstore will remain open on Fire TV and Fire Tablet devices. According to Amazon at the time, customers with active subscriptions can continue using these on the Fire products, but also have the option to cancel and receive refunds for subscriptions which extend past August 20. Customers are advised to update or cancel their subscription preferences ahead of the Wednesday deadline. A person holds a smartphone displaying the logo of Inc on July 29, 2025 in Chongqing, China. Photo illustration byAmazon Coins—used for apps, games and in-app purchases through the Amazon Appstore—became unavailable to buy in February, according to an FAQ page on its website. Customers can check Coins balances on the Appstore homepage. Amazon said that any coins remaining in accounts after August 20 will be refunded, though it did not clarify how this process will work beyond stating that "additional details concerning refunds will be shared at a later date." Newsweek contacted Amazon via email on Monday about when further details will be announced. What People Are Saying Amazon, in a statement to Android Police, said: "We've decided to discontinue the Amazon Appstore on Android to focus our efforts on the Appstore experience on our own devices, as that's where the overwhelming majority of our customers currently engage with it. We've also decided to retire the Appstore Coins program. Both changes will be effective August 20, 2025. Customers will be refunded for any unused Coins they've previously purchased after that date."
