How College Sports Wire graded Kalen DeBoer's first season at Alabama
To keep things simple, the Alabama Crimson Tide's results from this past season were not necessarily what a large portion of the fanbase is used to.
In year one of the post-Nick Saban era, head coach Kalen DeBoer and the Crimson Tide concluded the season with a 9-4 overall record, which was the program's worst since a 7-6 mark back in 2007. Alabama also finished with a 5-3 record in SEC play, missing both the SEC Championship Game and the 12-team College Football Playoff entirely.
So yes, it's easy to see why this might have been a disappointing year for Alabama overall. However, if you had to give a grade for Alabama's 2024 season, what would you do?
Well, we here at Roll Tide Wire have already done so previously, but what do others think, in particular, College Sports Wire?
According to Patrick Conn of College Sports Wire, Alabama and head coach Kalen DeBoer receive a grade of 'C-' for the 2024 season.
"Replacing a legend the likes of Nick Saban is never easy," Conn said. "It becomes increasingly difficult given how Saban is viewed as the greatest head coach of all time. But even the great Saban had a rough first season in Tuscaloosa. There were moments where it appeared that the Crimson Tide under DeBoer would be just fine but those dreams were quickly dashed with losses to Vanderbilt, Tennessee, and Oklahoma. What DeBoer does next will determine how restless the fans in Tuscaloosa will be with him running the program."
Looking ahead to 2025, DeBoer and the Crimson Tide could be under some pressure to have a bounce back year, and based on what Alabama has coming back, combined with multiple impact newcomers, there is certainly reason to believe the program will do just that.
Alabama will officially open the 2025 season on the road later this year, traveling to Florida State on Aug. 30.

Dare to dream. - Wasserman, On3 With a defense that is always steady under defensive coordinator Phil Parker, Iowa has a puncher's chance with a competent offense that shows a pulse. If they can get life from the offense, they become a very dangerous team that could take down a title contender to punch their own ticket to the postseason. Other Big Ten teams pegged as sleepers by Wasserman include the Illinois Fighting Illini who are ascending rapidly under head coach Bret Bielema who is paired with elite QB Luke Altmyer, the Nebraska Cornhuskers who are looking to continue their growth under head coach Matt Rhule, and the Washington Huskies, a newer team in the Big Ten looking to make a big splash. Three Alabama baseball signees receive Gatorade Player of the Year honors The hardware and accolades continue to roll in for Alabama Crimson Tide baseball signees at the high school level, as three players have recently been named the 2025 Gatorade Player of the Year in their respective state. Those signees are Luke Smyers, Eric Hines, and Will Rhine, who received Gatorade Player of the Year honors in the states of Virginia, Alabama, and Maryland, respectively. Of those three, Smyers saw action both ways for Godwin High School in Virginia, a majority of which came on the mound where he owned a 6-0 record with a 0.60 ERA and 116:17 K:BB ratio across 58.2 innings pitched. While at the plate, Smyers owned a .309 AVG offensively with three home runs, 23 RBI, and nine stolen bases. Hines, a local, in-state signee for the Crimson Tide out of Tuscaloosa, helped lead American Christian Academy to the state's Class 5A state title in 2025 with a monster season offensively in which he owned a .438 AVG. Along with that average, the Alabama signee also hit 20 home runs with 58 RBI. Lastly, Rhine attends John Carroll High School in Maryland, and also owned an average north of .400+, sitting at a .420 AVG. Rhine also added seven home runs and 32 RBI during his senior season. All three are names to watch for in the upcoming 2025 MLB draft later this summer to see when, and if, they are selected. If each makes it to Alabama next season, all three could easily play significant roles as freshmen. Auburn star earns PGA Tour Card after sensational sophomore season
Although Auburn couldn't quite get over the hump to repeat as the National Champions this golf season, the Tigers best golfer, sophomore Jackson Koivun, ended his extraordinary season with a coveted piece of hardware. The two-time SEC Golfer of the Year finished in fourth place overall during the stroke play portion of the NCAA Championships, giving him more than enough points to surpass the 20 total needed to acquire a PGA Tour Card through the PGA Tour University Accelerated program. Advertisement The program, which is designed to award juniors who accumulate 20 points through played events during their first three years of college golf, was finished by Koivun in just two seasons. Now with immediate eligibility to play PGA Tour events, the 20-year-old could choose to end his Tigers career after just two short years if he opts to become a professional. But Koivun, who has vocally pronounced his love for the Plains in the past, recently told Golfweek he would delay defer his card until 2026, again stating "he loves Auburn" before stating how he believes college golf "is in such a good spot right now and it's going to continually prepare [him] for the PGA Tour." Koivun is now the third collegiate golfer to earn his PGA Card through the accelerated program. Alabama native and former Vanderbilt star Gordon Sargent and former Florida State golfer Luke Clanton are the only other golfers to successfully finish the program.
