Netflix's Culinary Class Wars judge Paik Jong-won accused of power abuse and food code violations
Paik Jong-won, judge on Netflix series Culinary Class Wars and owner of 26 restaurant franchises, including Paik's Coffee, Paik's Bibim and Bornga, is facing a string of controversies from alleged abuses of power to food code violations that began in late January this year.
In the celebrity chef's most serious allegation, Paik was accused for violating country-of-origin labelling laws in its Paik-seok doenjang, a soya bean paste produced by Theborn Korea, an F&B company he founded, that was advertised as domestically made but allegedly contained Chinese fermented paste.
Theborn Korea has also been accused of violating the Farmland Act by manufacturing Paik-seok doenjang in an agricultural promotion zone, where using foreign raw materials in production is prohibited.
Paik could face up to seven years in prison or be fined up to 100 million won (US$70,000) under Korea's Act on Origin Labeling for Agricultural and Fishery Products should he be charged with falsely advertising the origin of ingredients.
Other accusations about product quality include low pork content in Theborn Korea's ham and minimal tangerine used in a tangerine beer launched by Theborn Korea's affiliate franchise Yeondon Ball Katsu.
This backlash has caused Paik's past controversies to resurface as well, including a video uploaded to Paik's YouTube Channel in May 2024, where it showed an indoor liquefied petroleum gas canister near a brazier in an indoor kitchen, violating the Safety Control and Business of Liquefied Petroleum Gas Act. This could lead to fines of up to 40 million KRW under the act.
In his most recent controversy, on Apr 21 this year, former TV producer Kim Jae-hwan accused Paik of abusing his power towards staff on the 2015 live competition show My Little Television.
In a YouTube video, the former producer said: 'Paik gradually began making unreasonable demands on the broadcasting company, insisting that only his designated writers and filming teams be included in the programme.
"This undermines the chemistry between the producer and the filming team, which is essential to the atmosphere of the show. If the filming team is only trying to please Paik, the on-set authority naturally shifts to him."
Kim alleged that behind the scenes, Paik would remove cast members he did not like, which producers had to apologise for on behalf of the chef.
'Most stars are cautious when it comes to staff issues – but Paik was different. Once word got out that he had a close relationship with the TV executives, he got his way,' the former producer added.
But not all of Paik's staff share the same sentiment. Another producer from My Little Television told South Korean newspaper Hankook Ilbo that there was no abuse of power when they worked together and that both the crew and Paik had put in significant effort to ensure the show's success.
Despite the backlash, Paik is still scheduled to appear in the second season of Netflix's Culinary Class Wars, with filming reportedly already underway, as well as in the third season of South Korean TV network tvN's The Genius Paik, where he opens Korean restaurants in foreign countries where few people know his name or Korean cuisine.

PHOTO: MEGANSKIENDIEL/INSTAGRAM Megan, half-Singaporean member of Katseye, comes out as bisexual Megan, a member of the global girl group Katseye, has publicly come out as bisexual. During a live broadcast on fan platform Weverse with fellow member Lara on June 6 , the 19-year-old shared her identity with fans, stating: 'I'm coming out. I'm bisexual.' The two celebrated the moment together, jumping in place with joy. Megan, who has a Singaporean-Chinese mother and American-Swedish father, debuted in the US with the six-member group in 2024. This marks the second coming out within the group. Back in March, Lara revealed her sexual orientation through a Weverse live broadcast. I was scared it might ruin my chances,' she wrote at the time. With both Lara and Megan now openly identifying as members of the LGBTQ+ community, Katseye stands out as a rare example of queer representation in the K-pop scene. Actor Haley Joel Osment ordered to attend Alcoholics Anonymous after ski resort arrest
LOS ANGELES - A judge has ordered American actor Haley Joel Osment to attend Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) meetings and therapy sessions for the next six months as part of a deal to dispose of charges of public intoxication and cocaine possession after he insulted the police. The 37-year-old, who rose to fame as the child star of horror film The Sixth Sense (1999), was arrested in April at a ski resort in Mono County, California. Police footage of the arrest showed Osment refusing to answer questions from officers. He also asserted that he was being tortured and kidnapped by a Nazi and used an anti-Semitic slur while addressing an officer. Later, he apologised for his words and said he had experienced a blackout. At a court appearance on June 2, a judge granted Osment's request for a one-year diversion from prosecution, saying he would dismiss the charges if over the next six months the actor obeys all laws, attends three AA meetings a week and meets with his therapist twice a week. Diversion is an alternative procedure in criminal cases in many states that allows certain defendants to avoid prosecution and a criminal record by agreeing to complete a rehabilitation programme and a period of probation. David Anderson, the Mono County district attorney, said in a statement that his office disagreed with the judge's decision, adding: 'Based on Mr Osment's prior Driving Under the Influence (DUI) conviction, as well as his slurs toward the arresting officer, my office did not believe diversion was appropriate.' Osment is scheduled to reappear in court in January, when the court will review his compliance with the orders. If he does not complete the diversion programme, criminal proceedings will be restarted. Osment, who will play a serial killer in the upcoming second season of the hit Netflix series Wednesday (2022 to present) that premieres on Aug 6, was charged with disorderly conduct and cocaine possession – both misdemeanours – after local officers confronted him in a parking area at the Mammoth Mountain Ski Area in eastern California, according to the Mono County District Attorney's Office. Police bodycam videos show Osment, who appears intoxicated, going limp when the officers tried to arrest him. 'You'll wish you treated me nicer,' he is heard saying in the video. In a statement after the arrest, Osment said that he was horrified by his own behaviour. 'Had I known I used this disgraceful language in the throes of a blackout, I would have spoken up sooner,' he said, according to The New York Post. Osment, who lost his home in the devastating wildfires that swept through Los Angeles in January, added that his recent troubles were no excuse for using 'disgusting' language. 'From the bottom of my heart, I apologise to absolutely everyone that this hurts,' he said. 'What came out of my mouth was nonsensical garbage - I've let the Jewish community down and it devastates me.' Osment was previously arrested in 2006 and pleaded no contest to one count of driving under the influence of alcohol and one count of possession of marijuana, according to People. He was sentenced to 60 hours of probation and to attend AA meetings. NYTIMES Join ST's Telegram channel and get the latest breaking news delivered to you.

FACT CHECK: Is This a Real Photo of Trump and Jeffrey Epstein Partying with Underage Girls?
A photo shared online that appears to show President Donald Trump posing with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein and young girls has fueled wild theories. The photo appeared hours after Musk went on a tirade against Trump, accusing him of hiding details from the public about Epstein because revealing the truth would expose Trump's own involvement. "Time to drop the really big bomb," Musk posted on X after the multi-hour tirade against the president. "@realDonaldTrump is in the Epstein files." Since then, several photos claiming Trump and Epstein together have gone viral online. However, this particular photo is completely fake and was circulated on social media to spread misinformation. AI-Altered Image On June 5, 2025, a photo began circulating on X claiming to show Trump with Epstein and a young girl in a crop top. A reverse image search on Google revealed that the photo had been posted across multiple platforms, including Reddit, Threads, Facebook, and various Chinese-language forums and websites. The same photo was posted once last year also. The photo sparked debate among social media users with many claiming the photo was real. One user pointed out how difficult it had been to locate the image online just two weeks earlier. Skepticism about the photo is understandable, as there are several signs it may have been generated using artificial intelligence (AI). Many noted visual inconsistencies, such as deformities in the girl's hand and irregularities in the sleeve of Trump's jacket. In addition, a reverse image search led to a full-sized version of the viral image. Major Flaws In the original version of the photo, further scrutiny revealed additional unmistakable signs suggesting that the photo was artificially manipulated. Examples of these anomalies included the deformed faces of people in the background, Trump appearing to have only one leg, and Epstein seemingly dissolving into the couch. Several social media users started taking the photo seriously because they saw only half of the original image. The complete photo looks hilarious. Also, some celebrities initially took the photo seriously and reposted it, which added fuel to the fire. However, it can be concluded that the image is completely fake and was posted to spread misinformation. In February, the Justice Department released over 100 pages of his phone records and flight logs as part of a "Phase One" release, which left many online investigators disappointed due to the lack of explosive details. Epstein's association with Trump has been public knowledge for years, with footage and photos showing them together at social events in the 1990s. The initial set of DOJ documents included Trump's name in the flight records, along with mentions of some of his family members — such as his first wife Ivana and daughter Ivanka — listed among Epstein's contacts. Advisors have quietly admitted that Trump's association with Epstein will probably come up again when more documents are released — though they maintain that the files don't contain any claims of misconduct by the president.
