No Circular Declaring A- Not Excellent, Says Fadhlina

KUALA LUMPUR, June 24 (Bernama) -- The Education Ministry (MOE) has never issued any circular stating that an A- grade is not considered an excellent result or that students with such grades are ineligible to apply for the matriculation programme.
Minister Fadhlina Sidek dismissed the claims as baseless and stressed that all students with excellent academic achievement are eligible to apply for the programme under the existing merit system.
'We have never issued any circular stating that A- is not equivalent to an A, or that A- is not excellent. We have never said such a thing,' she said.
She was speaking to reporters at the 2024 Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia (STPM), Malaysian University English Test and Malay Language Proficiency Certificate for Foreign Nationals Outstanding Student Award Ceremony here today.
Fadhlina said this year's matriculation intake process was among the most orderly and smooth, conducted transparently by taking into account various factors, including the number of subjects taken and the stipulated merit points.
She added that programmes focusing on science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) continue to prioritise student selection based on academic performance and merit, including through the Physical Activity, Sports and Co-curriculum Assessment (PAJSK) system.
'I hope this explanation clears the air. We have conducted this process fairly to ensure that all students are given opportunities based on priority and the allocated quotas,' she said.
She also said that automatic admission into MOE's matriculation programme is given to students who obtain 10As and above (A+ and A grades).
In another development, Fadhlina said the ministry will establish a Form Six Council by October to strengthen student leadership and serve as a voice for students nationwide.

Qatar's initiative to broker ceasefire successfully defused tensions in Middle East, says Anwar

KUALA LUMPUR: Qatar's Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani's initiative to broker a ceasefire between Iran, Israel and the United States has successfully defused tensions in the Middle East, says Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. The Prime Minister described the move as a crucial step that averted a larger confrontation and conflict in the region. "I also had a call with the Emir of Qatar, His Royal Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, this afternoon. I expressed my appreciation for his vital role in securing the ceasefire among Iran, Israel, and the United States. "This is an important step that successfully defused tensions and prevented a larger confrontation and conflict in the Middle East," Anwar said in a Facebook post on Tuesday (June 24). According to Anwar, Sheikh Tamim informed him that despite Qatar being in a difficult position, being drawn into the conflict, he still chose to focus on the bigger picture for regional peace. "I appreciate his steadfastness and sincerity in supporting these peace efforts, including Qatar's continuous role in ceasefire negotiations between Palestine and Israel," he said. Anwar added that Sheikh Tamim also informed him that he had contacted US President Donald Trump and discussed the peace efforts. "He used the opportunity to urge the United States to focus on efforts towards stopping the genocide in Gaza and establishing a just and lasting peace," he said. Desa Lestari Programme Helped Generate RM9.9 Mln Through Tourism Sector In Kinabatangan

KOTA KINABALU, June 24 (Bernama) -- Kampung Batu Puteh in Kinabatangan has successfully generated RM9.9 million through its tourism sector since 2014, a result of the Sustainable Village (Desa Lestari) Program, said Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi. Ahmad Zahid who is also the Minister of Rural and Regional Development stated that this is a highly commendable impact, with RM12.75 million invested by the government in Sabah through the program, creating 750 job opportunities and benefiting over 5,000 residents. He said that these investments are part of the government's ongoing efforts to develop rural areas, especially in Sabah, which still require significant improvements. "However, I acknowledge that, particularly in Sabah, much remains incomplete and far from perfect. A lot needs to be continued and improved. As the Minister leading the ministry that manages villages and regions, I want Sabah to continue to be cared for and to progress," he said. He made these remarks while officiating the MADANI 2025 Rural Leadership Empowerment Convention here today in the presence of Kinabatangan Member of Parliament Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin. Ahmad Zahid added that the government has also never neglected the state's human capital sector, with the opening of MRSM Ranau last year, which can accommodate 450 rural students, in addition to continued support in entrepreneurship. According to him, the government has also appointed 2,302 members of the MADANI Village Community Committee (JKDM) in Sabah, with an allocation of RM11 million for Phase 1 of 2025 specifically for allowances and operational activities to serve the people of the state. "I want JKDM to play its role as a catalyst for change, a facilitator of assistance. If there's a collapsed house, JKDM reports it. If there's a single mother who missed out on assistance—JKDM helps her apply. If young people are unemployed, JKDM finds training or job opportunities," he said. Ahmad Zahid emphasised that this responsibility is not seasonal work but an all-time trust, thus he does not want JKDM members who only know how to attend events but disappear when in the village.
