Ex-soldier wanted over deaths of his daughters spotted in remote US region
Your web browser is no longer supported. To improve your experience update it here Authorities say they believe they spotted Travis Decker, an ex-soldier wanted in the deaths of his three daughters, near a remote alpine lake in the US state of Washington, after receiving a tip from hikers who said they saw a lone person who appeared to be ill-prepared for the conditions. The Chelan County Sheriff's office said in a Facebook post that tracking teams responded immediately, and a helicopter crew spotted a hiker near Colchuk Lake, in a popular Cascade Range backpacking area called The Enchantments. The off-trail hiker ran from sight as the helicopter passed, the sheriff's office said. Travis Caleb Decker is wanted over the deaths of his three daughters. (AP) Teams later found a trail, and K-9 teams tracked the person to the area of the Ingalls Creek Trailhead, south of Leavenworth. Authorities did not say when they spotted the subject, but late on Monday night they issued an alert for residents in the Ingalls Creek and the Valleyhi community to lock homes and vehicles and to be on the lookout for Decker. Decker, 32, has been the target of a large manhunt ever since June 2, when a sheriff's deputy found his truck and the bodies of his three daughters — nine-year-old Paityn Decker, eight-year-old Evelyn Decker and five-year-old Olivia Decker — at a campground outside Leavenworth. He had failed to return the girls to their mother's home in Wenatchee, about 160km east of Seattle, following a scheduled visit three days earlier. Paityn, Olivia and Evelyn Decker were found dead in their father's truck on June 2. (AP) Decker was an infantryman in the US Army from March 2013 to July 2021 and deployed to Afghanistan for four months in 2014. He has training in navigation, survival and other skills, authorities said. He once spent more than two months living in the backwoods off the grid. Officials with an array of state and federal agencies have searched hundreds of square miles, much of it mountainous and remote, by land, water and air. The US Marshals Service was offering a reward of up to $US20,000 ($30,000) for information leading to his capture. Officials with an array of state and federal agencies have searched hundreds of square miles, much of it mountainous and remote, by land, water and air. (AP) Last September, his ex-wife, Whitney Decker, wrote in a petition to modify their parenting plan that his mental health issues had worsened and that he had become increasingly unstable, often living out of his truck. She sought to restrict him from having overnight visits with their daughters until he found housing. An autopsy on Friday determined the cause of death to be suffocation, the sheriff's office said. The girls had been bound with zip ties and had plastic bags placed over their heads. CONTACT US

Harrowing cause of death revealed for three young sisters
The autopsy results for three young sisters allegedly murdered by their dad have been revealed as their father continues to elude a police manhunt. Paityn Decker, 9, Evelyn Decker, 8, and Olivia Decker, 5, were discovered on June 2 near the Rock Island Campground in Chelan County, Washington days after they were reported missing following a scheduled visit with their father, 32-year-old Travis Decker. According to a press release on June 9 from the Chelan County Sheriff's Office (CCSO), autopsies conducted by the county medical examiner determined that all three girls died from suffocation. Their deaths have been officially ruled as homicides. The three girls were last seen on May 30 during a court-approved visitation with Mr Decker, who failed to return them. Inside the vehicle, investigators recovered a significant amount of evidence, including Mr Decker's personal belongings. Blood samples collected from the scene have been analysed, with one confirmed as male and another identified as non-human, according to the sheriff's office. Additional DNA and fingerprint analysis is ongoing. Mr Decker's dog was also located at the scene and turned over to the local humane society. Mr Decker is currently wanted on multiple charges, including three counts of murder, kidnapping, and custodial interference, and authorities warn that he may be dangerous due to his prior military experience. As of Sunday evening, June 8, local search operations transitioned to federal authorities, though the CCSO remains in charge of the criminal investigation. Officials cited the need to rest exhausted local teams, stating that their command staff continues to coordinate with federal search leaders. 'We had reached a point where we need to rest our local resources,' the CCSO said. 'Our teams will be ready to rejoin the search for and capture of the suspect after time off to rest and recuperate.' Authorities have released multiple photos of Mr Decker and are urging the public to remain vigilant. He is described as 5'8' tall, with black hair and brown eyes. Anyone who sees him is advised not to approach and to call 911 immediately. GEN The bodies of Paityn (9), Evelyn (8) and Olivia (5) Decker have been found at around 5 pm on Monday down a small embankment near the Rock Island Campground in Washington state, about two hours east of Seattle.
