Contractors fined £685k for non-compliant Norfolk roadworks
A county council has issued fines totalling £685,000 in a year for non-compliant County Council said it issued 44,000 street and roadwork permits in 2024-25 to utility firms and it said it rejected 5,400 of 7,000 applications for unplanned emergency works, deeming them penalty notices totalling £340,000 were handed out for 2,809 repairs that did not have a permit or failed to comply with permit conditions. The remaining £345,000 was collected from 306 repair jobs which overran, causing a total of 1,317 additional days of disruption on the county's roads County Council said 74 utility companies had the legal right to undertake works on public highways, and as such its powers "remain limited under national legislation".But the council said it was "committed to holding companies accountable" and in the past 12 months it successfully prosecuted two utility companies where a court imposed fines totalling almost £100,000, with full costs Plant, cabinet member for highways, infrastructure and transport said: "We are doing everything within our power to manage the impact of roadworks on Norfolk's communities."But the reality is that we don't have the authority to stop or delay many of these works. Emergency repairs at Peterborough footbridge after railings theft
Emergency repairs have been carried out on a city footbridge after it was vandalised and safety railings were Highways said about 20m (65.6ft) of railings were stolen on Friday from the bridge over the A47 connecting Walton and Fullbridge Road in councillor Alex Rafiq called it "an unusual incident" which left the bridge exposed and could have been "extremely dangerous" for said authorities acted "swiftly" to ensure the bridge was secured with temporary metal barriers and traffic cones and it reopened on Monday. Rafiq, who represents Paston and Walton ward, said: "I was frantically calling the council and panicking when I found out about the bridge not being secure. "It was frightening to know the barriers were missing especially as a father of two young sons."I have now reassured residents that temporary barriers have been placed and traffic cones left along the barriers which glow up in the dark."Unfortunately a few cones have been knocked over and were thrown over the railings which we have put back now."The temporary fence is solid and secure so I do not want residents to have any concerns about crossing the bridge." A National Highways spokesperson said: "We are aware that around 20m of railings were stolen from a footbridge over the A47 on Friday."While we try and source replacements, we have installed a temporary solution to allow the bridge to reopen."The theft has also been reported as a crime to the police." Former Spurs players back Postecoglou amid uncertain future
June 3 (Reuters) - As Tottenham Hotspur ponder the fate of manager Ange Postecoglou, former players of the Premier League side have thrown their support behind the Australian and urged the club's ownership to stay the course. Postecoglou guided Tottenham to Europa League victory last month, ending the club's 17-year trophy drought, but they also endured their worst domestic season for nearly half a century and finished 17th in the Premier League. The 59-year-old said last month he remained unsure of his future, with reports in British media on Monday saying Tottenham are set to make their decision this week. Former Swiss international Ramon Vega, who made 64 league appearances for Tottenham, said letting the Australian go would be one of the biggest mistakes the club could make. "I find it incredibly disrespectful to even think about sacking Ange Postecoglou," Vega said on social media on Monday. "He has accomplished the impossible - something others with more significant credentials have failed to achieve." Ex-Spurs and Ireland striker Robbie Keane said that in the eyes of the fans the Europa League win had made up for the woeful domestic campaign, and that Postecoglou had backed up his statement that he always wins something in his second season. In his first season at the club, Spurs were top of the league in October but they eventually finished fifth and suffered early exits in the FA Cup and League Cup. "There's no getting away from that (league form). I think everybody, certainly the manager, has admitted that," Keane told talkSPORT last week. "He's got a lot of stick, Ange, and to be fair to him, he's backed it up by his comment that he made about the second season and he put himself under a lot of pressure but he's done it.
