CM Stalin aids corporation school topper; provides financial assistance, laptop
CHENNAI: Chief Minister M K Stalin has provided financial assistance of Rs 25,000 and a laptop to D Shriya, a corporation school student raised by a single mother after her father abandoned the family.
This follows a TNIE article highlighting Shriya's financial struggles in pursuing higher education, despite scoring 565 out of 600 in her Class 12 exams and securing college admission.
Shriya was among five corporation school students who received financial assistance and laptops from the chief minister on Tuesday. Stalin also distributed laptops to 131 students during this event.
Also among them was Keerthana B, a student of the Corporation's Chennai Girls Higher Secondary School in Perambur who had scored 537 in the Class 12 exams. Her father, an auto driver, is currently under treatment for complications due to diabetes.
She is yet to secure a college admission due to financial limitations. TNIE had on May 22 reported the struggles of Shriya, as she was working at a soda factory for Rs 300 a day to be able to continue her studies. V M Muralidharan, chairman of Ethiraj College for Women, also reached out to Shriya via phone on Tuesday and said that he would offer any assistance needed to support her higher education, the family said.

Officers have been tasked with collecting more information and the process of reorganising the Lokayukta has begun, he added. Expressing his gratitude for the BJP-led Centre's support for Odisha, Majhi further said Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to visit Odisha on June 20. Listing some major initiatives, he said on June 12 last year, the state cabinet took four landmark decisions aimed at people-centric governance: opening all four gates of Shree Jagannath Temple in Puri for devotees; launching the Subhadra Yojana for women empowerment; establishing a Rs 500 crore corpus fund for the temple's development; and providing an Rs 800 bonus per quintal for paddy to farmers. He added that around 17 lakh 'lakhpati didis' have been empowered through targeted women-centric schemes, fulfilling the government's vision of self-reliant rural households. Highlighting education as a major focus, the chief minister said the launch of 'Godavarish Mishra Adarsh Vidyalaya' in each panchayat and the implementation of the New Education Policy (NEP) will revolutionise teaching and learning. 'WHERE ARE THE PEOPLE' Former CM Naveen Patnaik, however, slammed the BJP government accusing it of focusing on long speeches and advertisements rather than real development. During the launch of the 'Jana Jagaran Abhiyan' at Sankha Bhawan, he questioned the state government's achievements. 'They call it a people's government. But where are the people? Long speeches and big advertisements alone cannot bring development," Patnaik said. Patnaik said during the BJD's tenure, 90 per cent of the state's population benefited from the 'Biju Swasthya Kalyan Yojana'. 'The current Ayushman Bharat scheme fails to provide medicine or free hospital treatment. Thousands, including mothers, the elderly, cancer patients, and children, are facing harassment," he said. He alleged that the health system has collapsed, with posts of chief district medical officer lying vacant in 19 out of 30 districts. 'This is the so-called success of the current government," he said. Patnaik further claimed that 'Mission Shakti' brought glory to the state across India, but the present government has weakened this movement in a year. He noted that in 2000, the BJD had inherited a state with a loan burden of Rs 18,000 crore, and the government was running on overdraft. 'By 2024, the BJD left a treasury surplus of Rs 45,000 crore. The current government is now running on record loans," he added. He alleged that farmers are being exploited by millers while irrigation projects, which reached record high under the BJD, have been halted by the current regime.

Kolhapur: Kavita Dwivedi, the additional divisional commissioner of Pune, has upheld the previous directive issued by former Kolhapur collector Rahul Rekhawar. The directive classifies 57 acres of valuable land in central Kolhapur as 'B tenure' or category 2 revenue land, which requires govt approval for any construction. This valuable property, located next to the collector's office in Kolhapur, is currently valued at Rs 3,000 crore. The Kolhapur royal family had previously transferred the land to American Christian missionaries before Independence. Subsequently, portions of the property saw slum encroachments. A 2010 directive sought to change the land classification from B tenure to C tenure, allowing development without govt oversight. Various developers challenged Rekhawar's 2024 ruling by petitioning the divisional commissioner. "The five appeals made in this regard are rejected. The order issued on Jan 8, 2024, continues. This order is passed after analysing the deeds and documents," wrote Dwivedi in her order. Kolhapur activist Dilip Desai, who has persistently monitored this case, said, "In the 2024 order, it was explicitly ordered to the tehsildar Karvir to initiate the action to remove the encroachments, which could not take place due to the appeals. Now, we will press for the removal of the encroachments and utilisation of the huge parcel of land to develop public offices and amenities, as the location is easily accessible. "

On Suheldev's birthanniv, minister opens memorial gate
Varanasi: On the occasion of Maharaja Suheldev Rajbhar's birth anniversary, UP minister of state for stamp and court registration fees (independent charge) Ravindra Jaiswal inaugurated his memorial gate at Haveliya Chauraha in Sarnath. He used Rs 8.74 lakh from his MLA fund for the project. Speaking on the occasion, Jaiswal said that Maharaja Suheldev was a great king of Shravasti, renowned for defeating and killing Ghazi Miyan, a commander of Ghaznavi, in Bahraich in 1034. Suheldev was a king of Shravasti in 11th century, known for decisively defeating Mahmud Ghaznavi's nephew, Ghazi Syed Salar Masud, in battle. "In 1034, Suheldev's army clashed with Masud's forces. Syed Salar Masud Ghazi, Mahmud Ghaznavi's nephew, captured many parts of then-India across the Indus River. However, when he attempted to seize Bahraich, he faced Maharaja Suheldev, who defeated him and his army. Ghazi was severely injured in this battle and later died," the minister mentioned. He further stated that honouring great personalities has become the hallmark of the Yogi govt. The Yogi govt has not confined history to books but has brought it to the ground, honouring great figures, who were neglected by politics for years. Maharaja Suheldev is one of them, a warrior, who sacrificed his life to protect the nation and religion rather than bowing to foreign invaders, Jaiswal added.
