Rs 150 crore in rentals, lease pending from BBMP markets
As part of its decentralization efforts BBMP zonal authorities will be empowered to send notices, look after daily operations and collection of rental and lease dues.
According to a senior official from the BBMP Market Wing, there are 5,956 shops in the BBMP markets and are supposed to get Rs 152.17 crores; however, so far, the municipal body has managed only Rs 2.14 crore up to June 2025.
'In 2015, rentals were revised as Rs 33 per sqft for Upper Basement, Rs 32 for Ground Floor and Rs 31 for 1st and Second Floor. The total outstanding payments from all shops in 118 markets are Rs 150.03 crore pending from the last 10 years,' said a BBMP official.
GN Diwakar, President, City Market Flower Vendors' Association, said that from 2002, over 60 per cent of old rentals of Rs 9 per sqft for Upper Basement shops, Rs 8 for first and Rs 7 for second floors have been cleared by over 1,200 shops in KR Market alone. However, the matter of revised rentals proposed during the administrator's regime in 2015 was challenged in court, and the court tossed the ball in the BBMP's court.
'We are ready to pay the double amount of Rs 16, Rs 18, and Rs 14 per sqft, provided the BBMP provides drinking water, razes 22 illegal shops built on the passage meant for ventilation, fire exit route, installs generator sets, builds clean toilets and ensures the lifts are operational,' said Diwakar.
A senior official from the revenue department said that the markets have also been decentralised, and all eight zones' officials under the Zonal Commissioner and Joint Commissioner will have to look after the daily operations.
'The zonal officials will have to send notices and ensure the pending dues are collected. The administration and rental collection is now the zonal authorities' responsibility. The idea of decentralisation was due to a staff crunch in the BBMP markets wing. This will help in streamlining market administration,' said a senior revenue official.

THANJAVUR: Despite setting a target of procuring 2,500 tonnes of black gram under the price support scheme (PSS), regulated markets in the district didn't procure a single kilogram of the pulse crop during the stipulated 90-day period that ended on June 29. While farmers blame the 'high' quality parameters for their harvest going unsold, officials suspect the poor quality seeds the former buy led to the situation. According to officials of the agriculture and farmers' welfare department, around 12,000 hectares in the district came under black gram cultivation during the rice-fallow season that commenced in January 2025. To help farmers avoid distress sales of their crop, which they commenced harvesting in April, the Thanjavur district marketing committee had made arrangements from April 1 to procure the pulse crop at the minimum support price (MSP) of Rs 74/kg at the regulated markets functioning at Thanjavur, Kumbakonam, Papanasam and Orathanadu. During the 90-day procurement period that ended on June 29, not a single kg of black gram, however, was procured under the PSS scheme which was implemented by the state agricultural marketing and agriculture business department on behalf of the National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India Ltd (NAFED). When contacted the officials overseeing the regulated markets said the quality parameters fixed by the NAFED are 'very high'.

Farmers told to ensure bank accounts are active
Rajamahendravaram: Another major promise under the Super Six commitments of the Andhra Pradesh government has been fulfilled with the launch of the Annadata Sukhibhava scheme. The first instalment of financial support will be credited to the bank accounts of eligible farmers on Saturday, said Minister for Tourism, Culture, and Cinematography Kandula Durgesh. As part of the first phase, a sum of Rs 7,000 is being deposited into each eligible farmer's account. Of this, Rs 5,000 is contributed by the state government, while Rs 2,000 is from the Central government under the PM-Kisan Yojana, the minister clarified. The scheme is designed to provide a total benefit of 20,000 to each farmer in three instalments. Durgesh stated that following the Chief Minister's directive, inaugural events are being held at Rythu Seva Kendras (Farmers' Service Centres) across the state to mark the release of funds. Fulfilling this commitment to farmers reflects the government's dedication to public welfare and its ability to uphold the trust of the people, he added. Farmers were also advised to ensure their bank accounts are active. For those eligible farmers who may not have received the credited amount yet, the minister urged them not to panic. He advised them to contact the helpline number 155251 or the WhatsApp Governance number 9552300003 for assistance. They may also approach their local Rythu Seva Kendras for support.

UBI to sanction loans on plots of capital farmers
Guntur: A woman farmer from the capital region's Ananthavaram village Gopidesi Swathi has been granted a loan of Rs 20 lakh by the village's Union Bank to purchase a crane to be used in the construction work of the capital under the Nari Shakti scheme on Friday. Union Bank deputy general manager Syed Jawahar cut the ribbon and inaugurated the new crane purchased by the woman farmer. He himself drove the crane and handed over the keys to the owner. Speaking on this occasion, Union Bank deputy general manager said that it has been decided to sanction loans on the plots of capital farmers registered with CRDA. He said that under the PM Vidya Lakshmi scheme, Union Bank is providing education loans of Rs 40 lakh to students pursuing higher education in other countries without any security. Similarly, under the Sukanya Samriddhi scheme, women account holders who have an average of Rs 15,000 in their accounts and those who need cancer treatment will get assistance of up to Rs 5 lakh. He said that Union Bank is ready to provide more loans to the residents of the capital region. The locals who participated in the meeting said that it is a matter of happiness that banks have agreed to provide loans on the plots of the capital farmers. They expressed satisfaction with the bank's services. Speaking on the occasion, Anantavaram village Union Bank branch manager K Chittibabu said that Union Bank of India has given orders to provide loans on the plots of the capital farmers.
