This is how you can maximise space in a small home, according to the experts
Everyone would like more space at home. But what can you do to give the illusion of more room?
When it comes to small spaces, combining decorative pieces with practical considerations will help.
Making the most of a small space needs planning and creativity, according to Karen Walker, creative brand editor of the Ideal Home Show.
Walker says there are plenty of ways to maximise your space and create a home that feels functional, stylish, and spacious whether thats a studio or a tiny house.
Here's her expert insight on how to make the most of what you have…
Clever furniture choices
'When working with limited space, every piece of furniture should serve a purpose – or better yet, multiple purposes,' underlines Walker.
'Investing in multifunctional pieces is one of the best ways to maximise your square footage… look for items like sofa beds, ottomans with built-in storage, or extendable dining tables.'
Moreover, she says dual-purpose sofas are perfect for small spaces, combining comfort with clever design.
Walker continues: 'Wall-mounted furniture is another smart option – consider installing fold-down desks or wall-mounted tables that can be stowed away when not in use.'
Other innovative solutions such as a 'study bed', which transforms a room from a workspace in the day to a sleeping area at night, make them ideal for smaller bedrooms or home offices, suggests Walker.
Finally, she says to opt for furniture with a lightweight, airy design.
' Pieces with slim legs or open bases create the illusion of more space, by letting light flow through the room,' explains Walker.
'Glass or acrylic furniture, and even internal glass walls or doors can also make a small space feel less crowded, blending seamlessly into its surroundings and letting light flow through.'
Storage can be a major challenge in small homes, but with a bit of ingenuity, Walker says you can find some great places to stash your belongings.
'Start by thinking vertically… walls, doors, and even ceilings can double as storage space.
'Underutilised areas such as under the stairs, beds or sofas, can also be turned into storage zones,' outlines Walker. 'Use storage bins or vacuum-sealed bags to keep seasonal items, or less frequently used belongings tucked away but accessible.'
For kitchens and bathrooms, she says custom cabinetry can incorporate smart storage solutions like pull-out drawers, hidden organisers, and other options to make the most of every inch.
'Another great tip is to use storage that doubles as accessories,' reveals Walker.
'Woven baskets, trunks, or decorative boxes can be used to store items while adding a stylish touch to your home.'
'Hooks, racks, and over-the-door organisers are also lifesavers for small spaces, helping you keep everything from coats to kitchen utensils neatly organised,' she adds.
Design tricks to make your space feel bigger
Creating the illusion of a larger space is just as important as physically maximising it, notes Walker. 'Start with a light and neutral colour palette… whites, creams, and pastels reflect light and make a room feel more airy.
'If you want to add some contrast, consider incorporating darker accents in furniture or accessories to create depth.'
She says mirrors and mirrored furniture are another powerful tool for visually expanding a space. 'A large mirror placed opposite a window will bounce natural light around.'
In addition, Walker says to incorporate plenty of lighting to brighten every corner of your home. 'Layered lighting – including ambient, task and accent – can help define different areas in an open-plan layout, while making the space feel more vibrant.'
However, avoid using heavy curtains or blinds that block light, she warns. 'Instead, opt for sheer fabrics or leave windows bare to let in as much light as possible.'
Finally, keep your decor minimal and cohesive. 'Too many patterns, colours, or accessories can make a small space feel chaotic and cramped.'
'Instead, focus on a few statement pieces and let clean lines and uncluttered surfaces create a sense of calm,' advises Walker.

I found the perfect name for my daughter until I realised how it sounded out loud – I'm not the only one who struggled
CHOOSING your child's name is an exciting but significant decision. For some, the perfect name comes naturally, while others might find themselves overthinking - wondering if their child will like it or if it will even suit them once they're born. 1 One mum, Jodie Hoyle, found herself in this exact predicament. She believed she had picked a 'really likeable' name for her daughter - until she realised how it sounded alongside her surname. Jodie, who goes by ' jodiephoyle ' on TikTok, shared her experience in a video that quickly caught attention. She asked other TikTok users to share the names they loved but couldn't use because of how they paired with their surnames. In her case, she had her heart set on calling her daughter Olive, only to realise it would sound far too much like 'Olive Oil' when said together. Her relatable story had many parents chiming in with their own naming dilemmas. In fact, Jodie's video gained 277.1k views after just four days of it being shared, as 1,159 people also rushed to the comments section to share their thoughts and experiences. One wrote: 'My husband likes Skye. Our surname is Walker.' A second added: 'I knew of a girl called Peyton Paton, and yes her parents chose that.' A third commented: 'Scott but my surname is Chegg.' Channel 4 star horrifies fans as she reveals 'truly awful' baby names ahead of birth of second child However, some didn't snap onto it so quickly with some asking for more information. Then there was a response of 'it sounds like scotch egg.' Someone else added: 'I know a girl called Krystal who was adopted by her step dad, his surname was Ball.' Another said: 'My favourite girl's name is Etta. Our surname is Curry.' The struggle of choosing a baby name CHLOE Morgan, a Senior Writer at Fabulous, has revealed her dilemma on choosing a baby name... At 35 weeks pregnant, by far the trickiest part of pregnancy for me in the past few months (minus the insomnia and countless night-time wee breaks!) has been trying to decide on a baby name. The dilemmas are endless... My partner and I went for a private scan to find out the gender as early as we could - partly due to the fact we thought it would make baby naming so much easier because we'd only have to come up with a list of names for one gender rather than two. How wrong we were... I was absolutely thrilled to be told I was expecting the baby girl I'd already dreamed of, but being one of the last of my friends to fall pregnant, I've had countless conversations over the years with excited pals discussing their top baby which I wish I could go back in time and un-hear. With each friend mentioning at least 10 possible monikers, I can't help but feel like several are now a no-go even though I know it's something that none of them would mind in the slightest - it's a total me problem! The debate comes up time and time again on social media forums - can you choose the same name that was a "potential" for a friend's baby? It's a very divisive topic and opinions are always I don't want to be THAT person. While some will argue there's thousands of other names out there to choose from, others will say you need to choose YOUR all, there's no guarantee that person will even have another baby. Then there's also the issue of finding a name you to research it online and read one negative comment amongst hundreds of positives that you just can't shake off. I made that very mistake when I fell in love with a certain name (I won't reveal it because I don't want to ruin it for others!) ...only to see someone point out that it constantly gets autocorrected on a phone to something rather rude instead. So, back to the drawing board we went.. Just five weeks to go and it looks like our little one is going to be known as 'baby gal' for a little while longer! And this TikToker wrote: 'My dad asked why we didn't use his middle name like we did for our kids' middle names…. His name is Gordon, our surname is Bennett.' A seventh laughed, while saying: 'Jack, surname is Daniel's.' And someone else suggested: 'It doesn't matter what name they are given at birth… they can marry a new one like I did…….'

Patrick Mahomes' hulking half-brother Graham Walker given shock chance to join him at the Kansas City Chiefs
Patrick Mahomes ' half-brother has been given a sensational opportunity that could end with him signing for the Kansas City Chiefs. Graham Walker, whose father is also Pat Mahomes Sr., was not selected by an NFL team during last week's draft in Green Bay. But he has now been given an invitation to the Chiefs' rookie minicamp, which started on Saturday and is due to run until Monday at the team's facility in Kansas City. Walker spent three seasons at Brown University before transferring to Rice University and volunteering to change position from wide receiver to tight end. Walker, who is 6-foot-3 and weighs 227 pounds, declared for the NFL draft in January after registering 24 receptions for 252 yards at Rice. It is unclear what relationship Walker has with Mahomes, the three-time Super Bowl champion and MVP, but they have met a few times. However, Walker recently revealed his half-brother has been keeping an eye on his progress. 'I know Patrick has been watching the games, and he's reached out and said good things that I've been doing,' Walker told Seven Days. 'When someone who's accomplished so much can say you're doing well, it really feels good.' Walker grew up in Vermont with his mom Jessamyn Walker and stepfather Gerry Howatt. He is now one of 87 players attending the Chiefs rookie minicamp this weekend and, if he impresses, he could join Travis Kelce in the franchise's tight end room. Unfortunately for Walker, Mahomes and wife Brittany are currently in Florida enjoying the Miami Grand Prix. The couple danced the night away with Tom Brady and a group of friends as they let loose at the lavish Carbone Beach party in Magic City, where they were seen having a great time as Patrick unwinds in the NFL offseason. He could be seen enjoying a bottle of beer at the boozy bash while speaking with the likes of Brady, American rapper and singer Jelly Roll and other guests. Patrick, 29, and Brittany, also 29, rocked up to event casually, with the NFL superstar opting for a white overshirt and matching trousers with a baby blue top, while his wife looked as stylish as ever in an olive romper and black boots. According to Page Six, the couple were mingling backstage with Jelly Roll, who took to the stage later in the evening to perform some of his best hits. One notable absentee from the party was Patrick's good friend Travis Kelce, who was in New York City earlier this week for a photoshoot. The Chiefs star was seen near girlfriend Taylor Swift's Tribeca apartment for a rare shoot during a time where the power couple have deliberately tried to stay out of the spotlight after February's Super Bowl. It remains to be seen whether Kelce joins close pal Mahomes in Miami for the Grand Prix, which takes place on Sunday. Travis was in attendance for last year's event, albeit without girlfriend Swift.

EXCLUSIVE Kyle Walker jets back to Manchester on a RYANAIR flight as England star visits wife Annie Kilner during break from Milan
Kyle Walker opted for the budget option when making a late-night dash to Manchester just hours after playing for AC Milan at the San Siro. The 34-year-old, who returned to the Rossoneri squad for their 2-0 win over Venezia following surgery on a broken elbow, was spotted on a Ryanair flight from Milano Malpensa Airport to the UK. The defender's decision to move to Italy came amid family drama off the pitch, with Walker fighting for his marriage with the mother of four of his children, Annie Kilner, after also fathering two kids with his influencer ex-mistress Lauryn Goodman. Kilner and their children have made regular trips to Italy but have remained in the UK. Walker took up a spot at the very front of the plane and was, ironically, seen watching an episode of the Netflix reality TV show Temptation Island. The program sees couples travel to a tropical island to have their fidelity tested. The England international signed autographs for the cabin crew and was 'quite pleasant' according to a fellow passenger on the flight. He also exchanged messages with his Three Lions colleague and former City team-mate Jack Grealish. It follows reports last month that Walker upset his wife when he went partying with two Serbian models in Milan, having spent the day with his family before their flight back home. The pair reunited at their home in Cheshire shortly after Walker's night of partying, and the defender was in surprisingly good spirits. Shortly after arriving at the San Siro, Walker told GQ of his delight to have a fresh start and 'solely concentrate' on his football, away from the antics which caused distraction while at Manchester City. It came after Mail Sport revealed that Walker stopped Goodman relocating to Italy ahead of his move to AC Milan by refusing to allow her to rent out her Sussex mansion. The influencer, mother of the defender's two love children, intended to bankroll her move with the proceeds from a rental agreement, but Walker - who owns the £2.4m property - rejected the proposal. Goodman, 33, hoped to use the money to rent a place in Milan in order for Walker to be close to their two children Kairo, four and 16-month-old daughter Kinara. But the England defender, via his lawyers, told Goodman renting out her five-bedroom Sussex mansion was a no-go, saying if she did want to move out, the property would have to be sold. A source said: 'Kyle just laughed when he heard of Lauryn's proposal and booted it out straight away.' Goodman had previously expressed a desire to move to Dubai when Walker was initially linked with a transfer to the lucrative Saudi league after he told City boss Pep Guardiola of his intentions of moving abroad. But after agreeing a deal with AC Milan, Lauryn changed tact, telling pals she would follow Kyle 'anywhere' in a desperate bid for him to connect with their children, and no doubt deliberately irk his wife Annie Kilner. If Walker was hoping his private life would quickly cease to be a topic of discussion, he would have been devastated by the news revealed by the Mail on Sunday, that Goodman is planning a tell-all autobiography. In March, sources close to Goodman said she is in the early stages of the book and has been hunting for a ghostwriter. To make matters worse for the Walker family, she is also in talks to appear in a documentary for Channel 4 about badly behaved footballers. A friend told the MoS: 'Lauryn has been wanting to do a book for some time. She has been talking about it and asking writers to pen it for her. 'As we know, she does not hold back when she wants to say something she wants out there, so it is likely to cause Kyle and Annie yet another headache. 'They have been trying to move on from all of this but with a book on its way, it will be pretty impossible. Lauryn doesn't seem to want to live a quiet life.' Goodman told Kilner in December 2023 that her second child, a daughter named Kinara, was Walker's, along with her son Kairo, five. Kilner then threw Walker out of their family home in Cheshire, but three months later they began to repair their marriage. In October last year, she served him with divorce papers but friends of the couple insist they are trying to make their relationship work. On the pitch, Walker has made a big impression for Milan and featured in 11 matches in his first two months. The side are a long way off the Champions League qualification places but they could still get their hands on silverware in the form of the Coppa Italia. Milan have a £4.2million option to make Walker's loan deal permanent at the end of the season but, based on the defender's recent comments, a return to the Etihad remains a possibility. 'After I said my goodbyes, Pep [Guardiola] got up and spoke and said a really nice message to me, just saying thank you for everything,' Walker said on his BBC podcast this month. 'But listen, it's not over. I'm just on loan here. I've got to take that into consideration that I can go back. Obviously, both parties need to come to an agreement come the end of the season and. The chapter's not fully closed, we'll see what happens.'
