Police begin fresh search for ‘signs of' Madeleine McCann's body

Telegraph02-06-2025

Police investigating the disappearance of Madeleine McCann will begin fresh searches on Tuesday, near where the three-year-old went missing in Portugal in 2007.
Some 30 German police officers are expected to comb over 21 private plots of land after they were given permission to fly into the country by Portuguese authorities.
Sources said they would be looking for 'signs of' Madeleine McCann's body between Praia da Luz – where the three-year-old British girl vanished on May 3 2007 – and a house near the holiday resort where Christian Brueckner, the principal suspect, used to live.
The searches will be the first in Portugal for more than two years following a near-week-long operation involving Portuguese and German police officers at a remote dam a 40-minute drive from Praia da Luz.
The searches in May 2023 at Arade Dam, described at the time as Brueckner's 'little paradise', came to nothing.
They were the first major searches in Portugal in nine years following a June 2014 operation when British police were given permission to carry out digs in Praia da Luz that involved ground-penetrating radar and sniffer dogs trained in detecting bodies.
The digs, carried out by Scotland Yard were linked to the leading UK police theory at the time that Madeleine died during a break-in and burglars dumped her body nearby.
The 2014 search also failed to produce any evidence pointing to the missing youngster's whereabouts.
In a smaller operation in July 2020 Portuguese police and firefighters searched three wells for Madeleine's body but failed to find any trace of her.
A well-placed Portuguese source confirmed this week's operation was scheduled to get underway tomorrow but said some preparation work may take place beforehand.
He said: 'They will be land searches only.
'The main objective is to look for any signs of Madeleine's body.'
Portuguese police are understood to have agreed to cooperate with the search after it was approved by the country's judicial authorities following a formal request from German police and prosecutors.
The search is expected to last around three days, unless anything relevant emerges.
Brueckner remains in prison in Germany where he is serving a seven year term for rape.
The 48-year-old convicted paedophile had hoped to be released from jail in September but has reportedly been accused of new offences against prison guards.
Search 21 'privately-owned pieces of land'
Sources said the new searches would take place on more than 20 privately-owned pieces of land near to a ramshackle rented cottage on the outskirts of Praia da Luz where Brueckner spent several years living.
They said the search area would extend from the house eastwards towards an inland area known as Atalaia in the direction of Lagos.
One said: 'The search will take place on 21 privately-owned pieces of land which in some cases are open and not fenced off.
'Wells, ruins and water storage tanks will be searched.
'The landowners haven't had to be asked for permission and they can't stop the searches from continuing if they turn up because police will be acting with a judicial warrant.'
Another said: 'Around 30 German police officers have already arrived in Portugal and will be starting the search tomorrow.
'Portuguese police will also be on the ground.
'We are talking about a rural area with a lot of waste ground. Some of the areas that are going to be looked at have already been searched before.'
The German police team is expected to include forensic experts, who were also present for the May 2023 Arade Dam searches.
It is not yet clear if detectives are acting on a new tip-off about where Madeleine's body could be.
Portugal's Policia Judiciaria police force and the country's Attorney General's office have yet to make any official comment and are not expected to do so until after the search work begins.

Madeleine McCann police may have found 'smoking gun' after 'new evidence'

German and Portuguese authorities spent three days searching a 120-acre stretch of land in Lagos, Portugal, in the latest bid to find evidence against suspect Christian Brueckner Police investigating Madeleine McCann's disappearance may have found a "smoking gun" after "new evidence" linked the missing toddler to prime suspect Christian Brueckner, according to an expert. German and Portuguese authorities spent three days searching a 120-acre stretch of land in Lagos, Portugal, in the latest bid to find evidence against Brueckner. Crews spent days scouring scrubland, abandoned structures, and a derelict farmhouse in the area, which was just 30 miles from where the missing three-year-old went missing in May 2007. According to local media, "several objects" including "clothing and debris and bones" were found." A source told Berlin Morning Post: 'Several objects have apparently been discovered, which are now being examined in more detail by the police in the laboratory. As Portuguese media report, clothing debris and bones were found, among other things." Recent horror evidence discovered in Breuckner's lair led to the chief suspect being investigated, according to a new documentary. Images of children in swimming costumes, toddler toys, and sick kidnapping stories written by Breuckner, where he describes using chemical ether to abduct a mum and her child. A document also put the suspect at the location of a search for Madeleine McCann, where he allegedly said "she did not scream" as he discussed the British toddler with an associate. He also reveals a harrowing kidnapping story, including: "A very small girl enters the room. She's definitely not older than five." The search carried out last week was at the request of the German federal police as they look for evidence that could implicate Christian Brueckner. According to The Sun's documentary, an 80gb hard drive was found consisting of images and a laptop key, which may have prompted investigators to link the suspect to Madeleine's disappearance. The hard drive also placed Brueckner at the heart of the search location in Arades Dam, in Portugal. The documentary also revealed Brueckner also wanted to "capture something small and use it for days." Professor of Forensic Science at the University of Kent, Robert Green, believes the decision from authorities to carry out searches into Brueckner's lair could serve as a "smoking gun" for authorities. He told The Mirror: "The authorities' decision to carry out a new search, it is likely influenced by the accumulation of new evidence and information that may have come to light, particularly from recent documentaries and interviews. "As for the hard drive, if it contains incriminating evidence, it may indeed serve as a "smoking gun" for investigators. Digital evidence often provides invaluable insights into a suspect's activities, intentions, and potential connections to criminal cases. Should the contents be substantial, they could significantly strengthen the case against Brueckner. "The rationale behind the renewed search could stem from the ongoing pursuit of justice in the Madeleine McCann case and the hope that any additional evidence could lead to a breakthrough. Investigators continually assess existing evidence and pursue lines of inquiry they believe could be fruitful, especially in cases that have remained unresolved for many years."

Madeleine McCann detectives 'sample clothes and bones found during search' A search was carried out by German and Portuguese detectives last week Search teams have been conducting new searches as part of an investigation into the disappearance of Madeleine McCann (Image: PA ) Police are currently examining "clothes and bones" that were discovered during the recent search for Madeleine McCann, according to reports. Last Thursday saw the conclusion of a three-day operation by German and Portuguese detectives, who combed through a 120-acre area in Lagos, Portugal. This latest effort aimed to uncover fresh evidence against Christian Brueckner, the main suspect, took place roughly 30 miles from where Madeleine vanished in May 2007 at the age of three. Despite initial indications suggesting no new leads had emerged, it's now been reported that fragments of clothing and bones found at the site are set for analysis this week. ‌ The search, marking the first of its kind since 2023, involved intensive examination of the local terrain and derelict buildings, including an abandoned farmhouse. "As Portuguese media report, clothing debris and bones were found, among other things. "The investigators have not officially commented on whether the finds could have anything to do with Madeleine's disappearance but that is clearly their hope." A search team close to Praia De Luz in Portugal (Image: PA Wire/PA Images ) Article continues below Christian Brueckner, currently serving a prison sentence for raping a 72 year old woman in Praia da Luz in 2005, reportedly sent a letter to the police regarding the Madeleine McCann case, stating "decisive questions can never be answered". The note, which German media have seen, suggests a series of questions that could potentially link him to the disappearance of the three year old girl. In his letter, Brueckner wrote: "It is the important questions, the decisive questions that can never be answered. ‌ "Was I or my vehicle clearly seen near the crime scene on the night of the crime? Is there DNA evidence of me at the crime scene? "Are there DNA traces of the injured party in my vehicle? Are there other traces/DNA carriers of the injured party in my possession? Photos? And, don't forget, is there a body/corpse? All no, no no." The date of the letter's composition remains unclear. Meanwhile, a new documentary has revealed unsettling findings from an old warehouse once owned by Brueckner in Neuwegersleben, Germany. Article continues below The Sun reports that during a search of the premises, police found over 70 children's swimsuits, a toddler's bike, inflatable toys, and a collection of images stored on an 80GB hard drive, allegedly taken in Portugal. They also discovered a laptop, masks, guns, and a handwritten story about drugging and abducting a woman and child from outside a preschool.
