Malaysia plans 18 waste-to-energy plants by 2050 to boost renewable power

KUALA LUMPUR: The Housing and Local Government Ministry has set an ambitious target to develop 18 waste-to-energy plants across Peninsular Malaysia by 2050 as part of the country's renewable energy push. Minister Nga Kor Ming confirmed the WTE facility in Port Dickson began operations last year while the Sungai Udang plant in Melaka is expected to be ready by 2029. 'The initiative could generate up to 600 megawatts of renewable energy, supplying power to 500,000 households and supporting Malaysia's target of reaching 70 per cent renewable energy capacity by 2050,' he said. Nga revealed that 20 per cent of vehicles used for solid waste management will transition to electric models by 2027 as part of broader public cleaning system reforms. 'As Malaysia chairs ASEAN and the UN-Habitat Assembly, this reflects our commitment to advancing the Sustainable Development Goals,' he added. The shift to electric waste management vehicles including compactors and street sweepers is projected to reduce emissions while lowering long-term operational costs. – Bernama

EVs to make up 20% of country's waste management fleet by 2027

PETALING JAYA: The Housing and Local Government Ministry is targeting electric vehicles (EVs) to make up 20% of solid waste management operations nationwide by 2027. Minister Nga Kor Ming said the move was part of the country's public cleansing reform agenda, which emphasises sustainability and greener urban development. 'In conjunction with Malaysia's chairmanship of Asean and the UN-Habitat Assembly, this initiative reflects Malaysia's commitment to leading the Sustainable Development Goals,' he said during his keynote address at the International Green Build Conference 2025 here on Tuesday (Aug 19). Nga said EV adoption in waste management would cut greenhouse gas emissions while lowering long-term operational costs. Potential EV uses include compactors, street sweepers and water sprayers. Nga added that the ministry is also aiming to build 18 waste-to-energy (WTE) plants by 2050. The Port Dickson plant has been operational since 2023, while the Sungai Udang facility in Melaka is expected to be completed in 2029. According to Nga, these plants could generate up to 600 megawatts of renewable energy (RE), enough to supply 500,000 households and support Malaysia's goal of reaching 70% RE capacity by 2050. Malaysia delivering key Asean milestones during chairmanship, says Tok Mat

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia's chairmanship of Asean this year has delivered key milestones that reinforce the bloc's role as a credible, principled platform for navigating regional challenges, says Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan. The Foreign Minister said the upcoming Asean Summit in October, alongside the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) Summit, will further elevate Malaysia's profile as a respected hub for diplomacy and dialogue. 'With only four months left in our chairmanship, Malaysia remains committed to sustaining this positive momentum, particularly in ensuring the success of the 47th Asean Summit and related meetings,' he told the Dewan Rakyat on Tuesday (Aug 19). Mohamad said Malaysia's achievements as chair include the launch of the Asean Community Vision 2045, the signing of the Kuala Lumpur Declaration, and the historic admission of Timor-Leste as the bloc's 11th member. Under Malaysia's leadership, Asean maintained the Five-Point Consensus as the main framework for addressing the Myanmar crisis, while pushing for an extended ceasefire and engaging with all stakeholders to support peace efforts. He added that Malaysia led humanitarian missions to Myanmar following the recent earthquake, secured wider international participation in the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation (TAC), and advanced Asean economic integration through agreements such as the upgraded Asean Trade in Goods Agreement and the Asean Digital Economy Framework. He said Cyprus is expected to sign the TAC during the upcoming summit, following Algeria and Uruguay's accession, bringing total signatories to 57. Mohamad also highlighted Malaysia's efforts in coordinating the establishment of an Interim Observer Team comprising defence advisers from Asean member states to monitor compliance with the ceasefire between Thailand and Cambodia. He said this role highlights Malaysia's credibility as a neutral and trusted mediator in regional conflicts. 'Malaysia also played a pivotal role in expanding Asean's external engagement, including with the Gulf Cooperation Council and China, and recently facilitated dialogue between Thailand and Cambodia over their border conflict,' he said. 'These milestones demonstrate Malaysia's commitment to inclusivity, peace and stability, while strengthening Asean's centrality in regional and global affairs,' added Mohamad
